The season begins with The Storm, a premiere from James Wilton Dance. Seven highly-skilled dancers present an impressive fusion of acrobatics, break-dancing and martial arts, alongside a soundtrack of electro-rock composed by Amarok. “Handsomely crafted, ambitious and exciting” - The Times A 40-minute installation, Contagion, sees leading female choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh exploring ideas around viral pandemic and the metaphor of the virus conducting a parallel warfare against humans. Her choreography echoes the scientific features of a virus - rapid, random, agile and adaptive – where eight female dancers contort, strategise and mutate as they explore both the resilience and the vulnerability of the human body. Shobana Jeyasingh says: "The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 which reaches its centenary this year is beginning to assert itself in our collective memory as one of the most dramatic episodes of global proportions. I very much hope that Contagion will serve as act of commemoration and remembering.” Another leading female choreographer, Jasmin Vardimon, presents her new work Medusa, created on the coast of Barcelona and inspired by its marine life. Celebrating 20 years of the Jasmin Vardimon Company, this piece examines the gendered historical significance of Medusa; the myth, the symbolism and the philosophical idea of ‘reflection’. This new full-length production will also look forward and explore her aquatic symbolism in the environmental future of our seas. Towards the end of October, DanceEast is working alongside SPILL Festival to present two works at the Jerwood DanceHouse. Diamond, is a bitter sweet journey into LGBT liberation from 1957 to current day events through the thrilling biography of David Hoyle. David Hoyle says: “The show is a celebration of survival against overwhelming odds. We have a LGBT history we are proud of.” The second SPILL feature is Imagined Touch from Jodee Mundy Collaborations. This piece is a sensorium created in collaboration with Deafblind artists Heather Lawson and Michelle Stevens. Exploring their profound experience of living in a world without sight or sound, this is an immersive installation where the audience will experience tactile communication. National Dance Award nominees, Company Chameleon, present a triple bill celebrating their 10th anniversary. See the piece that launched Chameleon alongside two new works by the company founders, featuring athletic choreography to explore human and personal issues. 10 showcases Chameleon’s trademark style of creating socially relevant dance theatre that is both powerful and original. In November, DanceEast welcome local, Ipswich dance artist Holly Noble for the first time with her premiere of Snow, which tells the familiar tale of ‘Snow White’ with some not so familiar twists. This ballet retells the classic story of heroes and villains within a Victorian travelling circus using modern and classical music, narration, circus and film. This performance is interactive and will be sign language interpreted and captioned; so, the audience will leave the theatre feeling more connected to these characters than ever before. Always ending the year on a high, DanceEast have co-commissioned alongside The Place, a premiere from Luca Silvestrini’s Protein, to re-create a story that is well known and loved: The Little Prince. The story is retold by four dancers using Luca Silvestrini’s trademark style, theatre and music, encouraging the audience to look at the world through their hearts and reconnect with the child that’s in us all. Brendan Keaney, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of DanceEast says: “If you haven’t been to a DanceEast Christmas show before, don’t miss this opportunity, Luca has pulled together a great creative team and we’re in for something very special!” ENDS NOTES TO EDITORS Box Office 01473 295230 | DANCEEAST.CO.UK Jerwood DanceHouse, Foundry Lane, Ipswich, IP4 1DW AUTUMN 2018 PERFORMANCE LISTINGS JAMES WILTON DANCE, THE STORM Friday 28 – Saturday 29 September | 7.30pm SHOBANA JEYASINGH DANCE, CONTAGION *Installation Friday 5 October, 7.30pm JASMIN VARDIMON COMPANY, MEDUSA Thursday 18 October | 6.30pm *Schools Friday 19 – Saturday 20 October | 7.30pm DAVID HOYLE, DIAMOND (SPILL FESTIVAL) Friday 26 October | 7.30pm JODEE MUNDY COLLABORATIONS, IMAGINED TOUCH (SPILL FESTIVAL) *Installation Wednesday 31 October – Friday 2 November | 2.00 – 4.00pm & 6.00 – 8.00pm Saturday 3 November | 12.00 – 4.00pm COMPANY CHAMELEON, 10 Friday 16 November | 7.30pm HOLLY NOBLE DANCE, SNOW Saturday 24 November | 2.30pm LUCA SILVESTRINI’S PROTEIN, THE LITTLE PRINCE Wednesday 12 December | 1.30pm Thursday 13 December | 10.30am & 1.30pm Friday 14 December | 1.30pm & 7.30pm Saturday 15 December | 2.30pm & 7.30pm Sunday 16 December | 2.30pm About DanceEast DanceEast is one of the UK’s leading dance organisations.
