MAB
Joseph Calleja has just posted on facebook that Dmitri Hvorostovsky has died. His struggle with cancer was public knowledge and he had enjoyed a remission I believe so very sad news. I first heard his voice on Cardiff singer of the year, here's a reminder. alison
Oh no I'd thought from his general upbeat reports that the tumour was under control, although now I think about it I hadn't checked up on him recently. What a sad loss. I've seen his Onegin numerous times, and quite a few other roles, too.
Sim
Oh dear, this is so very sad. So young and so talented. I too thought he had recovered and was in remission.
J_New
Very sad indeed - such a lovely voice and such stage personality. He'll be missed!
RuthE
A couple of months ago his death was falsely reported by a dodgy Russian source, quickly refuted by his wife, but I was left uneasy at her choice of words - she hadn't said he was "alive and well" which is the turn of phrase I would have expected if he had been. I don't know what to say really, as many of my friends have much more personal anecdotes about him than any of mine. He was the first principal baritone I ever heard at the Royal Opera House, and although I was never a Fan with a capital F, he was one of the classiest singers around. I am very sad to hear of his untimely death especially as he leaves a fairly young family behind.

alison
http://www.roh.org.uk/news/remembering-dmitri-hvorostovsky-1962-2017 Semyon Bychkov talking about him on Radio 3 as I type. His last operatic appearances (I know he had some recitals scheduled earlier this year) were in Eugene Onegin at the Royal Opera House. I know I said at the time that wild horses wouldn't drag me to that production again, but now I wish I'd gone

Scheherezade
There were some very touching moments and some humour. I as glad to be there. I was also at the performance on 22nd November when his death was announced. It is as difficult now as then to think that we will never hear him sing live on the stage again.
