Jan McNulty
GET COSY THIS CHRISTMAS WITH DANCEEAST’S THE BORROWERS – MUSIC, MAGIC AND ANIMATION AWAITS A DanceEast season would not be complete without something magical for children. This Christmas Ipswich’s Jerwood DanceHouse will welcome a festive exclusive, from Wednesday 13 – Sunday 17 December. Commissioned by DanceEast, The Borrowers will capture the imagination of children, families and people of all ages, based on Mary Norton’s much-loved book. It is a ‘see it first at DanceEast’ moment before the production will tour throughout 2018, offering audiences the chance to get swept up in the world beneath the floorboards. Contemporary dance, physical theatre and animation will bring this story about tiny people to life, taking the theatre on a magical journey of discovery as The Borrowers flee their home, overcome fear and danger, taste freedom and adventure before finally finding a safe place to make a new life. Set within an oversized world of beautiful hand-painted animation, created by artist Betsy Dadd, audiences can join Pod, Homily, their headstrong daughter Arrietty and new friend Spiller for this playful performance by Jane Hackett Productions. It is the perfect festive treat for all the family, suitable for age 5+ years. Dedicated schools’ shows have been incorporated into The Borrowers’ run, however due to unprecedented demand, more shows have been added to the schedule. This is a great testament to the ongoing, positive relationship DanceEast is maintaining with Suffolk schools, both primary and secondary, across the region and into neighbouring counties. DanceEast continues to bring great dance to the East of England, with sold out shows across the season, and a great variety of outreach and extra-curricular activities. Audiences can get even closer to this classic tale, exploring story of The Borrowers in a special workshop on Saturday 16 December, through movement, animation and music. No prior experience or special dance clothing is required to get immersed in the magical world of these tiny people who live under the floorboards, perfect for children aged 7 – 11 years. Staged by kind permission of The Estate of Mary Norton.
