Inspired by the works of the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin, award-winning choreographer Russell Maliphant’slatest work The Rodin Project, returns to Sadler’s Wells for its first full run from Monday 29 October - Wednesday 31 October.

For The Rodin Project, Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant, has worked with a diverse mix of talented performers using influences from dance forms such as popping, breaking and contemporary dance alongside his own choreographic language of flow, form and dynamics.

The set for The Rodin Project is by Es Devlin, Bronia Housman with Russell Maliphant. Es Devlin has worked with many artists across the arts world including Lady Gaga, Take That, Royal Shakespeare Company, The Royal Court and Pet Shop Boys to name a few. Costumes for the production are designed by Stevie Stewart, who has previously worked with Michael Clark and Rambert as well as the designing costumes for international tours by Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears.

The Rodin Project is made in collaboration with lighting designer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Michael Hulls, who Maliphant has worked with for over 20 years and features dancers, Tommy Franzen, Thomasin Gulgec, Dickson Mbi, Ella Mesma, Carys Staton and Jennifer White. The work is set to a newly commissioned score by Russian composer Alexander Zekke, who was the only person to compose music especially for the recent 2009 Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch production …Como el Musguito en la piedra, ay si, si, si.

Russell Maliphant trained at The Royal Ballet School and graduated into Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet before leaving to pursue a career in independent dance. He danced with DV8, Michael Clark, Rosemary Butcher and Laurie Booth.

He formed his Company in 1996. He has also worked with renowned companies and artists including Sylvie Guillem, Robert Lepage, Isaac Julian, Balletboyz and Lyon Opera Ballet. In 2011 Maliphant was awarded an honorary doctorate of arts from Plymouth University. He became an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells in 2005.

In 2009 Maliphant created Part One of the award-winning AfterLight for In the Spirit of Diaghilev, Sadler’s Wells celebration of Les Ballets Russes’ centenary. Parts two and three of AfterLight followed and the work is currently touring internationally.
