Fallen Angels Dance Theatre - Upon Awakening - The Lowry

Recommended Posts

I have written before about my admiration and respect for Paul Bayes-Kitcher, the AD of FADT.

FADT's mission statement is:

"FADT exist to support those in recovery from addiction to transform their lives, and to share the recovery journey with the wider public, through dance, performance and creativity."

More details can be found on the company website.st to

Two weeks ago the company performed Upon Awakening at the Lowry and I was fortunate enough to be there.

The evening started with a short film about the work of the Company which supports a number of recovery groups in the North West.  One of the most moving aspects was seeing members of the groups talking about what being able to participate in dance meant to them.

Then the Salford Group gave a short and powerfully moving performance.  I felt quite humbled watching them because of their very obvious joy in dancing and their 200% commitment to the performance.

After a short break we saw the main FADT company perform Upon Awakening.  This piece, with its visceral, sharp choreography is about the joy that can be found in recovery.  The piece was danced by 3 professional dancers and 2 very accomplished members of the recovery groups.  Paul Bayes-Kitcher has a way of making people move that grabs you by the throat and makes you think about the meaning of your own existence.  It is powerful, moving stuff.

Fallen Angels are appearing at The Clore Studio at ROH on 2nd February.  Tickets are on sale now: http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/upon-awakening-by-fallen-angels-dance-theatre
