r3dh3d
Is there any way to stop this? Or fix it? DD's school insist on socks, and after the first few washes they go grey and disreputable. They seem to be made of nylon, and I dimly remember in the days when everyone had nylon net curtains, my mother used to soak them in something or other. But whatever it is might turn her pink socks white, which wouldn't help!
Moomin
have you tried freed ones? I found they kept their colour better, although they do slip down in wear
Farawaydancer
I found the best way is to only wash them with red and purple clothes! My dd happily wears these colours so it's no problem to find enough for a whole load. If they accidentally get put in with other colours they really do fade badly.
r3dh3d
We don't have a lot of red and purple, no - that may be our fatal mistake! I think it's a combination of the pink fading out and nylon picking up other colours from the wash really easily - they're always in the "lights" wash, but still there seems to be some transfer. I'm trying soaking them in Vanish now, to see if that helps.
Colman
I'm afraid the best option may be to embrace disreputability. I know of no way to keep our boys' white socks (or t-shirts) white.

balletbean
Cold wash, non bio powder/liquid on a quick wash. If only worn for one hour lesson then you could get away with not washing them every-time. They are a pain and I don't miss those days. Good Luck. taxi4ballet
It was a while ago now, but I used to do them in the 40deg pink/lilac/purple/red wash (those were the days). They seemed to keep their colour pretty well - Katz ones.
Moomin
We've usually lost one of the pair before they have a chance to fade anyway!
Bluebird22
One if my tinies had the most perfectly pink socks tonight, I asked her mum for the secret to keeping the socks from fading and she looked at me like I had gone totally off my rocker, apparently she "just washes them". They were first position ones

Oh I'm so relieved it's not just me... that sinking feeling when you smugly pull the leotard out of the bag for a swift change, only to find it looks like DS has mystically played rugby, or made tomato soup in it since last time...

Or you put on a brand new one, straight out its bag, and they immediately decide to clean the corridor by rolling around in it. Can't win.

A dash of Milton is good for soaking them. But don't put too much in or you will remove the sock from the dirt!
Kate_N
Try buying cotton in future, and soak overnight in Napisan.
sarahw
Very hard to get cotton dance socks - they're all nylon.
JulieW
I presume we're talking about girls' pink ballet socks rather than the boys' white ones (we used long cotton white ones rather than the nylon ones for the boys).... My daughter's pink ones went in a white wash with liquid for whites. They maybe went a touch paler over time but no sign of greying socks for us! Pixiewoo
I always wash pink ballet tights and socks in the white wash. Generally ok, although one pair of tights faded to grey! (Which reminds me ... better check tight situation as exams coming up!)
r3dh3d
I think the problem is actually that she is wearing a tracksuit on top of the socks and the dye is transferring at that point - doesn't matter after that what I wash them with, the damage is done. Gah.
Wigglybunny
Never, ever, ever use fabric softener! DS's white socks and leotards stay white much longer now we've realised.
Confuddled
I find the Vanish White works well. And shoving them in with the red towels if they're looking overly Vanished.
