It's just a shame that there isn't the one week option for the older ones. £1,550 (breakfast only) plus travel and probably a nights stay for myself is a lot however it's broken down ...... I could take the whole family away for that price , that said I'll probably still apply for dd , 5th time lucky maybe

As I live on an Island, travel (expensive at that) is just a way of life for us residents for whatever reason we choose to travel Business, leisure, health) unfortunately. So I can certainly relate to your issues.

The price for Covent Garden is pretty expensive as it is non-residential; accommodation is included for some others for a similar price.

I think it is broadly the same price, CG is 2 weeks, £800 for tuition and £730 for the optional accommodation.

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly.

I read it that way as well. CG accommodation is optional.

As the students are obviously older they could source Hostels or commute in everyday if they lived close enough or select accommodation at RBS CG. The choice is theirs.

I suppose being in London will add to the pricing. In comparison Moorlands was around £900 for 2 weeks all in this year and Ballet West around £1000 all in for 2 weeks.

At least with BW, a deposit is taken when booking. Then final payment is in May. With the option of 1, 2, 3 or even all 4 weeks if you wanted to. Spreads the cost slightly. But you do have to factor in Travel costs as BW is located in the most stunning but isolated location.

I guess RBS is tempting because they sometimes pick off other schools' dancers at SS (the cynic in me would say, having got bored of some of their own) so it is still a chance to get in to the school and that's really what you pay all those fees for.

I don't think that's the case. I hope not as my daughter couldn't make the course this year due to a pre-booked holiday!

Flowerpot, the CG course refers to a course that JAs around the country are invited to at Covent Garden in each year that they are JAs. It is lovely for them, but last October it wasn't even a dance course in October, it was an invitation to watch a pre-general rehearsal at the royal opera house. There was also a dance day in Feb but that was after results were out for SS so I can't see how the courses at CG had any impact, for year 5 at least. When I thanked my daughters JA teacher for any input she may have had on my dd getting a year 5 place at WLSS last year, she told me that they aren't consulted and they work purely off photos and the application form to determine potential xx

She absolutely loved it flowerpot thank you. As much for the social side and the lovely friends she made as for the dance experience. She'd never stayed away from home before for something like that and I thought she'd be homesick but I hardly heard from her! Good luck to your little dd, and with her audition for JAs. Just keep it light is ny advice, we went with no expectations and just for a lovely class experience and didn't expect to get a place, especially with all the competitive stretching that goes on before you go in which can be intimidating, especially as my dd couldn't even do the splits at the time! But tell your dd to enjoy the class, smile, lose herself in the music and show how much she loves dancing and that's half the battle as it's potential they're looking for for everything else xx

When my dd was in JAs the October course was for Y6 only. It was 2 days dancing at Covent Garden. In Y5 she went to watch a rehearsal.

I think the point about WL is that very few get into the SS or vocational training so if your child wants to do a SS or vocational training I wouldn't put all your eggs into that basket.....

Well, every summer school is motivated by income generation, there is no social benefit agenda. Not to my mind at least.

That's a very strong statement, Sherbert. From what I can gather, summer school students (here and abroad) seem to benefit hugely from tuition by leading dancers (as well as different teachers) and from multi-national interaction in terms of both dance standards and the opportunity to socialise.

Totally in agreement with you.

It's also a great opportunity for children to meet and experience the standard of other like minded children. So easy to get so wrapped up in their own 'bubble' mixing with the same children week in week out. helping towards confidence in an audition situations a later date. Also if, like my DD are are considering a full time place some time in the near future, a SS is a brilliant introduction to life at a school. Something that a prospectus just doesn't show.   :)

I was discussing the schools motivation for running a course. You have described a students motivation for attending, not the same thing.

I agree that the school’s main motivation is money generation, but I don’t have a problem with that.  I’m sure many schools put on an excellent training programme, which is very beneficial for the students who attend, but the primary motivation for the school is the income. They are a business so they have to do whatever they can to make the books balance. If they weren’t providing a good service though, people wouldn’t buy it.

Hi Flowerpot

If you search using the summer scools tag you will get lots of threads to look at. The main issyes are:

Age of child

Where you live

Would you consider residential

Do you want just ballet or other types of dance as well?

I'm sure many could give you some pointers with this info. There is generally less choice for younger ones. HTH

The £25 fee is at least waived for applications from WL children.

But to be honest, WL children already benefit from RBS training......surely the whole point of a SS should be to reach out to others & give as many the chance to experience it as is possible? I think by encouraging their own students to apply they are alienating others & surely many will come to the conclusion that if your child has already been rejected for WL full time to then have the rejection yet again & possibly for the same lucky talented WL kids they auditioned alongside before to get the places.....My conclusion is really I should save the money & avoid the (inevitable?) disappointment fro my DC...but you know I'll still be filling in that form & paying the £25 for that golden chance - however slim - to see the joy on my child's face if the chance to live out their long held RBS dream came true just once in their life!

Last Oct CG days was for Yr6 associates and consisted of a Nutcracker workshop day and the following day was an audition insight day. DD really enjoyed both days. The audition insight day consisted of a normal audition class and followed by a brief talk and questions by Christopher Powney. Xx

Well, that’s it - application in. Not happy with the developpe photo, but then who ever is??? Also not keen on the 'tendu devant efface with arms in fourth’ as it just looks like dd is having a quick armpit sniff - but to be fair it looks like that on the photographic requirements silhouette. Will start researching the back-up plans now :)

I'm sure they will be great. well done and fingers crossed for you. Hopefully you will keep us posted. Any idea when the announcements are made?

I would love to work in the office at RBS, having never done these applications I'm just plain noisy to see all the photos coming in. I honestly don't know what they can tell from a few quick pics!  ;)

Thank you BlueLou, very interesting.

Any idea how many actually apply per age group or however they group the students?

I'm quite new to all this, a complete amateur compared to many that deserve a medal for their dedication! I had absolutely no idea even about Associate training etc

Love to know more about all these schools and how they operate.

Last year’s rejection email (well, wait list!) said they’d had over 1680 applicants for 350 places, but no idea of the age breakdown. They are grouped by age. Students aged 14-15 are only eligible for the 2 week White Lodge course. Lots of info on the website http://www.royalballetschool.org.uk/train/summer-programme/white-lodge/
