Ballet related gift for older dancers 18+

For older teenagers and adults it's probably best to steer away from anything too pink and fluffy!! :)  ;) Steer away from the dvd of 'Black Swan' as well

How about a dvd of Moira Shearer in The Red Shoes, and some tickets to see Matthew Bourne's new version later this year?

Think it also depends on the circumstances of the 18+ dancer ie at home or away, dance as a hobby or in training for a career

Practical gifts for dance - like toe tape, bun nets, hair pins and something to store them in always go down well - also things like a top for over the top of a leotard for warm up or wrap around dance skirts.

A student away at vocational school (or away on a contract)- easily portable items to store make-up, jewellery etc and pretty storage items - boxes or bags.  Photo frames or small pictures/postcards of ballet/dance to decorate their room/sleeping space. Wall calendar/diary. Phone case

Gifts my DD has been given (that have to stay at home and cannot travel with her) - wall canvases of dancers of various sizes, bronze(?) statuettes of dancers, cushions and bed throw. Set of toiletries in a lovely ballet themed carry case

other ballet related film DS really enjoyed (and good for the boys) is Mao's Last Dancer. He also likes DVDs of ballets recorded with principals who you wouldn't be able to see now (rather than contemporary performances).

Actually DS thought Black Swan was hilarious and quite enjoyed it. Personally I'm not sure Red Shoes is any less ridiculously hysterical, it just has less sex and gore (and that's more a sign of the time it was made rather than any particular inherent virtue!!).... and I also think the not so subliminal message of Red Shoes is far nastier than Black Swan- the central character is punished (by death no less) for daring to believe her career was as important as her husband's. Who was a complete selfish git. But clearly had 'God' on his side. Much like the character of the little girl in the story of the Red Shoes who was viciously punished for daring to want to wear something pretty. At least in Black Swan there is a human cause (overbearing mother, bullying director and excessively perfectionist central character) and there was no sense that she brought it all on herself because of some fundamental moral failing. Clearly the ending was over the top but it felt much more about human mental illness than a sermon on how women should stay in their place or else...

Some ideas from an older teenage dancer I know: Bloch Booties with the paint spatter effect (no pink please), really good quality make brushes, loose cutaway cotton t-shirts to throw on over dance wear and cotton shorts with a draw string, fluffy socks to put on tired feet after class, fleecy throw to wrap up in (ditto), a new exercise mat with carrying strap, any pretty classical leotard with interesting detailing, a years supply of bun nets and hair pins....

I struggle every year to find little goodbye presents for our graduates and this year there are about 7 17/18 year old school leavers, none of whom are continuing on to dance professionally - well not at the moment anyway.  Still I want to give them a ballet memento because it's from me - they invariably give all the teachers toiletries.  I often give a miniature satin ballet shoe keyring, but that's getting boring, so I too would be grateful for ideas.
