Berlin based company Sasha Waltz & Guests, which is known for its innovative choreographic musical theatre performances, present the UK premiere of a Sadler’s Wells Co-production, Sasha Waltz’s Continu. This full length dance performance which has been a decade in the making, consolidates many of the key elements of Waltz’s work from the past ten years, and takes particular inspiration from two major museum-based projects she created in 2009: the artistic inaugurations for David Chipperfield’s Neues Museum in Berlin, and Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI in Rome.

Created for 24 dancers and premiered in 2010, Continu is set to a contemporary symphonic score, featuring Arcana, written in 1927 by visionary French avant-garde composer Edgar Varèse. Featuring costume design by Bernd Skodzig, scenography by regular collaborators Thomas Schenk and Pia Maier Schriever and lighting by Martin Hauk, Continu is also set to music by Iannis Xenakis and Claude Vivier, composers who, like Varèse, were inspired by scientific and mathematical philosophies.

Since the 2010 premiere of Continu in Schauspielhaus Zürich, Waltz has further developed the piece, with the most recent version being presented in the summer of 2011 in Salzburg. The beginning of the newly evolved version features the percussion solo Rebonds A by Iannis Xenakis, which will be performed live by the percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky.

Sasha Waltz was born in Karlsruhe, Germany. She studied dance and choreography in Amsterdam and New York. From 1992 onwards she was artist in residence in Künstlerhaus Bethanien. There she developed a series of "dialogues" in interdisciplinary projects with dancers, musicians and visual artists – a mode of collaborative creation that has characterised her artistic output ever since. A year later in 1993, she founded her company Sasha Waltz and Guests with Jochen Sandig.

Together with Sandig, they also founded the Sophiensæle in central Berlin, as a center for the development of free theatre and dance. Here they developed Allee der Kosmonauten (1996), Zweiland (1997) and Na Zemlje (1998), as well as the project Dialoge `99/I.

In 1999 she took over as Artistic Director at Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin alongside Thomas Ostermeier, Jens Hillje and Jochen Sandig. She opened the Schaubühne under new direction with the debut of Körper (2000).

Once her 5 year period with the Schaubühne finished she reactivitated Sasha Waltz & Guests as an independent company again, with a base in Berlin. It was established as an international project with 25 permanent and 40 associate collaborators.

Since being founded the company has collaborated with more than 250 artists and ensembles, from 25 countries on nearly 20 productions that have included sight specific works, operas and full length dance theatre works.

Continu is a production of Sasha Waltz & Guests in collaboration with Schauspielhaus Zürich/Zürcher Festspiele, spielzeit’europa|Berliner Festspiele and Sadler’s Wells.
