cavycapers
The other thing would be to take them to an Antiques Road Show, the kind of back story they would love, especially as it was a BBC production! Lots of people would get to see them, and you'd get a valuation.
Don Q Fan
Yes I like the Antiques Roadshow idea!!! And Dance Europe may be worth a try too.
Don Q Fan
I had contacted Kerry Taylor auctions already before the new info and had been told I needed more provenance so now I have it! I think in 2019 when it is Fonteyn's centenary will be the right time to sell them......till then they will have to remain in my loft and I will continue to dream! That's great! Perhaps you could consider loaning them to a museum for a display before you sell? They may even do a bit of conservation for you in return. taxi4ballet
You can contact the Antiques Roadshow in advance if you have particularly unusual items, they like to be able to do some background stuff. I suggested the Dancing times not to help in selling them, but because we have all been so interested in reading about these tutus.
Ian Macmillan
I've been busy elsewhere and have just picked up on this interesting thread. So, on the matter of whether costumes might have been specially made for a TV recording, I know that was done for a BBC recording of De Valois' Checkmate in pretty much the same timescale as here - and a set of yellow costumes was made for the Red characters to show up properly in black and white. (Provenance? My wife was in the Black team.)

cavycapers
Here's the link to let the Roadshow know of interesting items in advance https://ssl.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mj2y/contact if they're not interested I'll eat my hat.
Yolanda
Maybe you could speak to Kerry Taylor Auctions in London. Kerry specialises in fashion and is very knowledgeable about that market so would probably be able to point you in the right direction. Alternatively seek out specialist dance/ theatre museums. There's the Dans Museet in Stockholm and the Costume Museum in Bath did have some Nureyev things.v Kerry Taylor auctions have put an estimate based on my photos of £2,000 - £3,000. Interesting!

I wrote to the DT last year and they printed my letter asking if anyone knew where they came from. I think it was always the Fire Fairy that was my biggest challenge and in the SB 1959 film the fairies are not referred to by name, only as Fairy Godmothers which made searching all the more difficult. I am happy to spread the news if anyone is interested. I could contact DT again maybe....
Jan McNulty
A tutu worn by Alicia Markova is being auctioned: http://www.eveshamjournal.co.uk/news/regional/14391855.Swan_Lake_tutu_worn_by_legendary_ballerina_to_go_on_sale_in_Stourbridge/
cavycapers
The Markova tutu that Janet mentions sold on Saturday at Fieldings Auctioneers for £2,600! Somebody wanted that badly! It's estimate was only £400-600. Makes a Fonteyn tunic look very attractive surely?
Yolanda
The Markova tutu was immaculate whereas my Fonteyn was was dusty so the auction house in Bristol had it steam cleaned which seems to have made it very dirty looking rather than clean. It was blue when I gave it to them. I also watched the Fielding auction.was fascinated watching her hats and scarves being sold as well as lots of her other things....was tempted! Yolanda
Hello again. I still have the 3 tutus and the estimates are the same from Kerry Taylor namely £2,000 - £3,000 for the Fonteyn and a measly £200 - £300 for the Sibley and Sinclair tutus even though the Sinclair Fire Fairy is the most stunning of the three. I was planning to put them in for auction next year thinking the centenary might be a good time to realise the best price but who knows! I saw earlier this year that Fonteyn's Firebird bodice didn't reach its reserve of £2,500 (from memory) which is amazing as it really is an iconic costume. I am wondering if anyone has another approach rather than an auction with a 15% commission charge.
