June 17:Sadly only on Sky, South Bank Show "The Male Dancer"

Recommended Posts

This Sunday, June 17 at 10pm, Sky Arts1 have a new South Bank Show "The Male Dancer". Here is the announcement from the Sky website: http://skyarts.sky.c...the-male-dancer:

In this episode of The South Bank Show, we look at the rise of the male ballet dancer as superstar, while asking what it takes to make a great dancer: the sacrifices, the dedication, the passion, the personal tragedy.

A special study will be made of the ballet Mayerling, choreographed byKenneth Macmillan and filmed for The South Bank Show in 1978; this full-length ballet, more than any other celebrates the male dancer as a tour de force, and the lead part of Prince Rudolph is widely considered to be the most fulfilling role for a male dancer.

As well as extraordinary archive interviews and footage of Rudolph Nureyev, Kenneth MacMillan, Michael Clark, Matthew Bourne andWayne MacGregor, we bring you interviews with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Tamara Rojo, Edward Watson and Carlos Acosta. Acosta will also be performing especially staged pieces.

We've certainlly seen this - or large chunks of it - relatively recently on non-Sky TV - I partcularly remember an interview with the young David Wall speaking about dancing the role of Rudolf.
