Marie-Agnès Gillot to Debut as Choreographer for Paris Opera Ballet

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone had more background information on this -

Marie-Agnès Gillot is preparing her first choreographed piece for the POB (2013). There is video (in French) announcing this at:

operadeparis.fr/en/saison_2012¬_2013/Ballets/gillot-cunningha¬m/detail/

She has done some short modern pieces for outside projects, but I believe this would be her first full length project for the POB. Note that Marie-Agnès Gillot was the first dancer in the history of the Paris Opera Ballet to be made an Etoile not at the end of a traditional ballet, but after a modern dance performance.

Well, POB does seem very keen on giving its étoiles major choreographic projects, doesn't it? Hmm, there's nothing terribly concrete on the video, is there? Thank you for spotting this, pherank, and welcome to the forum. Do you follow the POB much? I must say that we seem to have very little coverage of them on the forum, unfortunately.

Hello: Yes, I try to follow what goes on at POB (and at San Francisco Ballet too, btw), but I don't happen to speak French. ;)

So the video information is lost on me. It don't think a female étoile has choregraphed a work before (for POB). But I may be wrong aobut that.

Pherank,

I played with google and found that found that according to Wiki Carolyn Carlson worked from 1974 to 1980 as Etoile-Chorégraphe at the Paris Opera Ballet. There is more about her on

http://www.ccn-roubaix.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8&Itemid=2〈=en. There may be other female choreographers, I didn't investigate further.

Wiki gives an incomplete listing of POB choreographers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Opera_Ballet.

http://www.operadeparis.fr/en/L_Opera/le_Ballet/le_Ballet_de_lOpera/Etoiles/Marie_Agnes_Gillot.php is Marie-Agnès Gillot's page on the POB website, which is in French & English. It has lots of interesting material on it. I see that they are doing La Fille Mal Gardee soon!
