p.s. - My copy arrived today! Will watch tonight. So I’ll get to prepare for the ABT premiere ahead of time.

I watched my DVD of Wheeldon/Talbot’s LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE ballet last night, as I prepare to travel next month to New York City’s Met to see ABT’s US premiere! A handsome production, beautifully portrayed by the Royal Ballet! 💗

As for the ballet, my short takes:

- This is the ultimate Celebration of Mime and story telling, most handsomely decorated!

- There are almost no traditional dances, that could be included in a gala program. The one big exception: a two-minute dance by the revolutionary leader, Juan Alejandrez (Cesar Corrales here)during the Campfire scene near the end of the work. I wonder which fabulous ABT soloist or corps man will essay this role?

- The ghostly head of Mama Elena (Laura Morera here) floating above the stage will be remembered by all!

I’m truly looking forward to my trip next month! ✈️

And in the live performances, his spellbinding Juan Alejandrez completely stole the show.

Be careful in New York if they offer you Quail in Rose Petal sauce, it appears to have strange effects. I make sure that I stick to the British traditional Fish & Chips when out, they are quite safe.

Correction: ABT’s performances at the Met will mark the Eastern US premiere of LWFC.

Also, I heard from a California friend that one of the dancers who played the high-flying Juan Alejandrez at Segerstrom was principal Aran Bell…so he’ll maybe dance it at the opening gala on 22 June?

Listed by several distributors as being released today on DVD & Blu-ray is Ballet Monte Carlo, Jean-Christophe Maillot: COPPEL-I.A.

Apparently this takes the doll to the stage of A.I. in a modern production. ?

"Put out the torches! Hide the moon! Hide the stars!"

This thread has been a major source of information to me since it was started by charliewise back in 2015 and quite recently I have gratefully added Coppel-A.I and Like Water for Chocolate with it's beautiful final pas de deux.  But these are exceptions. I have been building my collection of recordings for over 70 years, embracing not just Dance but also Theatre, Opera and much else. But sadly that is coming to an end as theatres and companies embrace streaming. Will we see programmes from such diverse companies as Opus Arte, The BBC, The Bolshoi etc issuing recordings on disk or being broadcast in the future? I fear not and much of the material from the past will not find it's way onto streaming. My collection is pretty comprehensive (and bulky!!!!) and I am so very grateful to Members of the Forum who have shared copies of their precious recordings with me. But I still mourn my failure to record certain performances eg.  :

Theatre - Oscar Wilde's Salome - the performance of the original French Text by Radiodiffusion Television Francaise back in 1969 with the French Prima Ballerina Ludmilla Tcherina writhing orgiasticly in the title role (there is a copy on You Tube but it is virtually unwatchable;

Opera - Harrison Birtwhistle's Gawain aired by the BBC but my recorder failed;

Darcey Bussell's Farewell Performance including Das Lied von der Erde with Gary Avis and Carlos Acosta, amazingly never released on disc.

I have seen many changes of format since my boyhood when I first started haunting second-hand shops looking for the old one-sided, G&T shellac 78 recordings of the like of Caruso, Schipa, Melba and Galli Curci. Each change of format has meant loss! Those of us who have been recording assiduously over the years are holding what are fast becoming historical collections which I suspect will never again see the light of day. And IMHO, streaming, targetted at the bucks,  is a poor substitute!

I have also built a sizeable collection and recently added 'Like Water for Chocolate' and 'Coppel-A.I'. Unfortunately when new recording like these arrive, something now has to go to make space in my cabinets. I am now storing older and less popular recording in boxes on shelves in the garden shed and catalogued under  'Garden Shed'.  Agreed, there are not so many new releases of late but a few out of print and some old rare gems turn up occasionally, recently picked up Houston Ballet 'Ghost Dances' at a reasonable price. Maybe we could add to this thread 'Rare and out of print releases'.

Remember, vinyl has made a comeback and the size of storage required for vinyl was a bigger issue than the compact disc version and being positive it has every chance of a return because of its convenience, hopefully when pandemic and wars fade away.

So it is not yet time to despair and we must try to remain positive.

Well yes indeed, I welcome the return of vinyl despite its cost and so do my family who have invested in expensive turntables, etc. CDs never cut it with me coz they never sounded the same, I think coz they only sampled sound waves so you didn't get the full-bodied sound? Anyway, good to hear from you again Stevie - you have informed many of my choices over the years. And yes, I also have the Houston Ghost Dances - but in my case the cost was far from reasonable so well done you!

I should have suggested a link to the thread which said, 'rare and out of stock releases at reasonable or bargain prices.' I will keep a look out !

A usually reliable source on IG has posted that there is not going to be a RB Cinderella DVD released. I have sent the box office a message (I'm sure they will neither confirm or deny) but has anyone else heard this?

I haven't heard this, but it doesn't surprise me. When I emailed customer services about releasing a potential couple of dvds of live cinema relay performances I'd like to have seen on dvd, the reply was a definite no from them. They said there were (in the case of several things I had asked about) other dvd recordings of those particular ballets already, so they wouldn't do them again. I suspect dvds don't sell well enough to justify releasing them and with the new streaming service, I wonder if Cinderella will go there as it's more cost effective? I do hope it will be available in some format.

I can see not re-releasing titles already out there and I think you're right about the cost effectiveness issue, but this was a brand new, much heralded production and the ROH in the past has always put a DVD out for new productions (albeit a year later).   While I wasn't enamored with the production, hopefully it shows up somewhere (other than illegally on You  Tube)

From the 2023/24 announcement, it apparently will be next year?

This is on top of wider digital innovation as we make available 24 more productions on ROH Stream. These will include work from Wayne McGregor, and Joseph Toonga's See Us!!, as well as The Royal Ballet’s new production of Cinderella. These will be supported by a raft of new behind-the-scenes films, interviews and performances, including a celebration of Antonio Pappano's tenure as Music Director of The Royal Opera; a host of choreographic and vocal masterclasses; and exclusive World Ballet Day content, with rehearsals and insights from across its rich ten-year history.

Never mind....the always helpful Graham Boland has replied....

There are plans to release a DVD of this production in November this year.

It is hoped that it will appear on stream sometime next year.

Hello Stevie, just reading your post now...  I can relate to having too many things and having to store outside of my home (in my case an apartment)! Just please do be careful about using your shed as storage if it isn't temperature / humidity controlled and *if* the recordings are precious to you as even plastic will deteriorate under extreme conditions over time. DVDs also have that metallic layer inside which again can deteriorate. (I work at an archives and we sometimes receive donation offers of items which sadly have been stored in less than ideal conditions.) Something to consider, but I get that the shed may be the most viable option at this time 🙂

Recently I have purchased plastic wallets, which store 90 DVD's at a time and occupy minimal space, but I cant bring myself to dispose of the original cases and booklets, so they have gone back into the shed in their boxes. When I get time I will catalogue them as per wallet number. But thanks for the tip, I hadn't considered frost damage, just ease of access, but it sounds a sensible precaution. I am sure that there will be many of us with similar issues, so it is good to discuss issues and potential solutions.

Having seen the production live in theatre, in the cinema and the illegal posting on youtube, this doesn't surprise me. There are clearly some issues with the lighting which need to be rectified for any filmed version, as there was with Acosta's Don Q which was commercialised anyway. Strategically they may be saving this production for their online stream if they aren't too bothered about the lighting factor.

I thought there were production issues as well and the URS did say it was going to be "improved".  But ROH customer service says they are going ahead. November is a very quick turnaround for a ROH DVD so we'll see if it  actually materializes.

Thank you, Lemondrop, that's very helpful.

People might also like to have a look at this thread which I started more years ago than I'd like to admit:

Hi Stevie, separating the DVDs from the cases/booklets sounds like an excellent solution to preserve the discs. If you're really ambitious, maybe you could even scan the booklets and save digitally, but that would be a ton of work. Anyway, I'm sure the cataloguing will get done eventually and will be well worth the effort. Good luck!

Thanks Stevie...that is exceptional value; just slightly miffed that I recall paying much more a while back just for Orpheus and Eurydice ! Still, the other two discs must be well worth laying out another £6.77.

Plus you will have three discs taking up only the same space as the one on your shelf. You could then give Orpheus as a Christmas present or sell it on. Don't let anyone know I told you, they may suspect that's what I did. It was cheaper than buying just Rain !

This is amazing.   Would you be so kind as to share a link?  For some reason I was unable to find it via google.    I would like to check to see if this is available to buyers outside U.K. (even without free shipping etc).

Thank you.
