  1. Hi Looking for experience please, would someone be kind enough to tell me what generally happens at the first auditions for Year 7 RBS and Elmhurst please. Things like do they need to do splits both types front and box, froggies, improvisation etc that sort of thing... do they take their shoes off etc. All this is new to us and I'm on a fact finding mission 😂 thanks in advance 😊
  2. Sorry for starting a new thread but I didn’t want to post in several and am interested in hearing about all vocational schools. What are the chances of being offered a vocational school place into Year 10? If you are not successful for scholarship funding (or are ineligible) can you still be offered a place if you can pay fees?
  3. Does anyone know the costs of attending the Royal Ballet Upper School or the English National Ballet School please? Tuition and accommodation? Are there grants/loans available to help pay?
  4. Hi all. Looking for one ticket to the Royal Ballet School performance on Sunday in the ROH; any price band. Hoping for something other than the Amphitheatre (am trying to trade up, ie move down 😉
  5. Hi all, My child 11 is on w1 non-res of WL Summer Intensive. Could anyone who’s child has done an Intensive at WL give me some information about what to expect. I would like to know is the day really well structured, what are the approx size of the classes, are the children supervised well in downtime. I am asking because my child has autism, RBS are aware, as my child is an associate with them. My child isn’t staying on in the evenings, they will be finishing after the last dance class of the afternoon. I am able to contact the Pastoral Care contact a few days before the course starts and make support arrangements with them should they arise. They were fabulous with my child at the WL finals, really supportive and accommodating. It would be v helpful for me to help my child prepare to know more from the parent perspective, not just the official RBS information given. 😊 i have some idea of how organised RBS are as my child has done workshops with them at Covent Garden, so am hoping for more of the same on the Intensive. TIA.
  6. I have one spare ticket Stalls c18 for the Royal Ballet School performance at Linbury on Wednesday 26th. Paper ticket. £20
  7. Just really wanting to understand how the Mid Associate auditions differ to the junior if anyone has any information. We would be looking at Manchester, I know its a bit soon (we just got DD no yesterday from JA) but I believe the applications open in September and I like to have an understanding so I can mull over the options during summer. Not sure if its something we should consider really, I know places are even more limited at this stage. Thanks
  8. I don't know if this is already common knowledge but @MrsBBB has drawn this link to my attention, which sets out some details of the programmes. I've very pleased to see Flowers of the Forest, which is a piece I think works well for senior students (and which I thought might be coming up as we saw some RBS students rehearsing it in a recent insight evening). I also think Marriott's Simple Symphony is a great piece for the students.
  9. Any idea of the times of the SA classes in Covent Garden on a Saturday please? Also what is the uniform? We will be supplied with all the info we need in due course but I’m just trying to plan ideas for travel to London....... thanks in advance
  10. When will results be out?
  11. Hi, i was wondering if anyone knows anything on ballet upper school open days, as I could only find information for royal and tring?

    Recalls

Hi everyone, so after auditioning for the past 2 days at WL year 7. I'm curious to know how everyone feels about recalls as a lot of the girls were crying as they left. Do we feel it's the end or there is still light at the end of the tunnel? My DD really thinks she doesn't stand a chance now. But the top dog did say it doesn't mean yes or no. I would love to hear your opinions as I'm going crazy 🤪 xx
  13. hi, I'm currently 15 years old (year 10) and i'm starting to look at vocational ballet/dance schools to apply for when i'm 16. (Upper schools/6th Forms.) I'm a serious dancer, and i particularly love ballet, although do modern/jazz too. I train more or less daily alongside gym/pilates. I currently do festivals as-well and my mum coaches me for my solos (she's an ex dancer) I don't currently take any grades, but in class we've worked through the RAD advanced 2 syllabus and one of my teachers has suggested me taking the exam, so i'm around that level right now?? Anyway, I just wanted to know any info about dance schools... such as auditions, the standard, what it's like, personal experiences and also any way i can improve my training in advance for full-time training! Thank you!
  14. Can anyone give us any tips for the RB audition please. My daughter would be entering year 10

  16. Auditions are coming up soon for Mid-Associates year 9/White Lodge lower school, and though by no means the main issue to consider, my dd had a question about make-up! On the info sheet it says no make-up. From anyone's experience, do the 13-year-old girls literally wear no make-up or can they wear subtle natural-coloured mascara and a little foundation, or how strict is it?! Any advice welcome.
  17. Ever since my daughter's ballet teacher told me that she's should consider auditioning for the RBS JAs I've been lurking on here trying to work out whether it's a good idea. She wants to do it so we've decided she can go for it, although we/she knows the vast majority of people don't get through. However I still feel I'm in a world I know nothing about and trying to make decisions and know how to help her is tough! When I was younger I had no desire to do ballet at all. I loved riding, so I understand what it is to have a real passion for something but not dance. As an adult I love to watch ballet and I'm lucky enough to get lots of free tickets - so I do really appreciate and admire it - but the last few weeks have taught me I know nothing! (Kind of thought I did after watching so much - so wrong there). I've got a few questions to ask and hoping someone can help. The first 2 are simple I think. The last one's trickier and guessing there's no right answer but interested in the views of people with a lot more knowledge than me. 1. I've been looking at the cost and it's quite pricey! I wouldn't have thought we'd be eligible for help as we're ok but spend a large chunk of our salaries on (low) private school fees so don't have much to spare after that. But I see there are a variable number of lessons priced up. Can you choose how many you do? What are the pros and cons of doing fewer? Obviously we'll save money but would she miss out? Or at 8, would it be better not to do too much to start with anyway and see how she goes? 2. I think the answer to this isn't what I want to hear! - are the lessons in Richmond Park or Covent Garden? I'm guessing Richmond Park. CG is so near to us - Richmond Park somewhat further! 3. Lastly - and I know all this is very previous, but I like to think things through! - if she got very into ballet and wanted to be a professional dancer, I'd be worried. From an outside perspective it's so tough to get into, a hard life in many ways if you do, low pay and a short career. Am I wrong? I know I don't know much about it and this is an outsiders view. Do I have the wrong perspective? Most importantly is it unfair of me to encourage my daughter now if further down the line, I might be actively discouraging her? What do people who were ballet mad youngsters think? Very grateful for any answers/thoughts.
  18. My daughter is auditioning for the JA's this year. My sister previously auditioned and was asked to demonstrate her flexibility. Box splits etc. Has anyone else's child experienced the audition? I was just wondering what sort of things they will be asked to do.
  19. Just wondering what the assessment procedure is for JAs and Mids. Do parents get feedback throughout the year? Do the students get an idea of their weaker areas before the assessments so they know what to work on beforehand? Apparently Elmhurst Associates do not give parents any feedback of their child's progress at any point during the year and no report at the end of the year for Extended Associates. How can they justify this?
  20. Hi there, My daughter had an audition back on the 14th January for mid-associates. We've been told we will hear something either way around Easter. Just wondering if anyone has heard back already?
  21. EDITED BY MODS TO ADD: This thread is for the continued discussion of the British classical ballet training system that developed in the "Good luck/Audition results" thread for 2018 auditions. Please bear our Forum Rules in mind when posting; notably not "outing" other people's children or making it easy to identify certain students by posting which school they are coming from/going to AND that highly critical posts must be made under your own name. Many thanks. ******** Vonrothbart's original post: There's a girl who was told by RBS when she was 16, that she didn't have the "right" body for ballet, she was accepted into the company when she was 18, via a different route.
  22. Hi, does anyone have a child that is currently a Junior associate that also does dance festivals? Just wondered how you find it and whether you have spoken to RBS about it? From what I understand its kind of looked down on to do the festivals, so I presume it's not a good enough reason to miss any sessions. So far my dd has put royal over festivals and hasn't missed any sessions, however becoming increasingly difficult when she is now in groups and has duet partners etc, Any advice or similar experience?
  23. My daughter currently attends year 5 Junior Associates in London and is hoping to get a place at White Lodge in September, although we realise how small a chance she has. Consequently, she will plan to audition to get into Mid Associates but as she will then be in Year 7 in her senior school there are expectations on the sporty girls, which she is generally, to take part in fixtures on Saturday mornings. So I'm wondering how I'm going to do all of this, obviously with the huge assumption that she will get into Mids?! Junior Associates are 11.30 currently but I'm hoping if the Mid Associate classes might be later in the afternoon we could get her there after fixures. Does anybody know the times of the classes in London? Many thanks.

  25. Hello! I am hoping someone can help me as I don’t have much experience in the ballet world!! I am wondering whether to apply for my daughter to audition for junior associates with RBS or not. She is 8 in July will be one of the youngest. She has only been dancing for 1.5 years and has only just passed grade 1. She only dances for 45 minutes per week so will not be as experienced as other dancers. I know they say not much experience is needed but is this really true? If it’s just potential they are looking for then we may stand a chance! Her ballet teacher says she has a lot of potential. I just don’t know whether it is worth us applying or not! She does LOVE dancing which I think is important! She doesn’t stop constantly dancing round the house. My second question is how flexible do they have to be? She is fairly flexible as in she can almost do box splits but she’s not quite there.... Thanks for your advice! X
