  1. More information on Global Gala from Sadler's Wells on Dec 5 The Sadler’s Wells Global Gala will be broadcast online and whether you join us for five minutes or for the whole hour, all are very welcome. Expect to see performances, sketches and messages from our global family, all in support of the theatre. All funds raised will be matched and will contribute to the full reopening of our theatres and the return of our artists and audiences. https://www.sadlerswells.com/whats-on/2020/sadlers-wells-global-gala/
  2. In case you couldn't access the Washington Post link in last week's Links, here are details of MMDG's online season: https://markmorrisdancegroup.org/40th-anniversary-digital-season/ Starts with a livestream tomorrow, 12th November, extracts from The Hard Nut in December, Dido and Aeneas and L'Allegro next year, and more.
  3. Not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere but I just received an email from Sadlers Wells announcing a free virtual Global Gala on 5 December. The email itself mentioned some of the participants (Osipova & Acosta included). Registration link: https://www.sadlerswells.com/receive-updates-about-sadlers-wells-global-gala/
  4. While hunting around for charities supporting performing-arts freelancers, I landed on this, which may be of some help to some struggling UK dance teachers: https://www.dancefund.org.uk/grants/living-costs/ Even if nobody here needs it directly, I'm sure someone will know someone who ...
  5. The Scottish Ballet has a new film out this December. Free online (donation requested) This Christmas, Scottish Ballet will bring the magic of the theatre right into your home. In a deserted city, a young boy stumbles into a theatre. He wanders through the auditorium, where rows of velvet chairs, draping curtains and chandeliers seem to lie in lonely wait for audiences to return. The theatre may be empty, but the show will go on... Starring characters from our most popular festive ballets, the worlds of the Snow Queen and the Sugar Plum Fairy collide when the theatre bu
  6. If I wanted to make a donation to charities supporting those parts of the Arts sector which are still lacking support from the UK Government, what choices would I have? I'm not really sure where to start. (And I would really want them to be charities so that I could Gift Aid it). Suggestions very welcome.
  7. I’m confused! Are we allowed to go out of County to an Associates class this weekend?? My brain is fried! 🙈😆🙈😆🙈
  8. Apologies to all having issues with the stream. OMG, Mayara Magri and Matthew Ball in Carousel. Steaming. 💐 💐 💐 Am loving the gala format which shows us pieces like this that I hadn't seen before. Also reminds me of the incredible talent of the RB, who don't all get the attention they deserve, like Sarah Lamb and Ryoichi Hirano (gorgeous in Diamonds) and Akane Takada and Federico Bonelli (so moving in Swan Lake). So grateful to be watching them all.
  9. My daughter has loved being back at dance. Just read the rule of 6 applies to indoor sports too. Such a shame as her ballet teacher will need to do some juggling/extra classes or zoom to accommodate this. Completely understand and happy to follow all the rules. Just feel for the teachers and pupils managing the changes.
  10. Streaming news from my dear neighbors to the north: The National Ballet of Canada begins its ‘20/21 Virtual season today, with “Expansive Dances” - films of three specially-made ballets...including one featuring my special favorite, NBC prima Heather Ogden, choreographed by her husband (also NBC principal) Guillaume Cote. Could it be that I last saw Ogden as Aurora at the Kennedy Center, just seven months ago? It seems like years ago! https://national.ballet.ca/Productions/Expansive-Dances?fbclid=IwAR143JH1qG3z-yRZP3N-c20b26WXFGe8te2xu7tUOx6XZlD33rPwn7Y66Es
  11. I found the Opera programme highly enjoyable. It was rather strange to see the orchestra using the whole stalls area and to see members of the chorus scattered around the theatre. Clever choices of repertoire that didn't require close contact between the soloists, some that is obviously difficult to achieve in ballet. There was a handsome set - I think.it may have been specially designed for the occasion, but someone on this forum may correct me on this. I most enjoyed the finale with Gerald Finley, orchestra and chorus in the Te Deum from Tosca. Amazing how an artist like Finley, can, in just
  12. https://www.brb.org.uk/whats-on/event/outdoor-dance-displays A wealthier permitting, free outdoor event from BRB and Birmingham based South Asian dance company Sampad. From the above link: Audiences can enjoy the rare opportunity of watching Birmingham Royal Ballet’s professional dancers in their daily ballet class accompanied by Company pianist Ross Williams; daily class is essential for every dancer to improve technique, prevent injury and be performance ready. They will then be treated to two solos by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s professional dancers, The Dying
  13. Shall we select our “top five” ballet streams of the past five+ months? With last night’s closing program from Vail, an intense dance-stream season is winding down. I made my selections based only on “brand new” content that had never before been streamed or cinemacast before the COVID situation. In other words, either new works or, if already seen, danced by a company not before seen in a certain ballet. First, my top-15 (or so) shortlist, by city/company...all very generous with streaming: Buenos Aires, Teatro Colon Ballet: Coppelia in the beloved version
  14. Great news. I was sent the following email by a good friend who subscribes to a dance series at the University of Minnesota, where ABT is set to tour its Don Q in April. One of the performances will be a livestream option for $25 a household. No details yet about casting or platform to be used (locked Youtube, Vimeo or other). The notification from the university: https://tickets.umn.edu/northrop/online/default.asp?doWork%3A%3AWScontent%3A%3AloadArticle=Load&BOparam%3A%3AWScontent%3A%3AloadArticle%3A%3Aarticle_id=9F1C3F79-885E-4CBF-B1E1-2C605531684C So will other dan
  15. Sarasota Ballet have announced a true 'Heritage' programme for their upcoming Autumn digital season and for which you can buy tickets to watch. I have a feeling that many hereabouts may want to do so as it features some true Ashton gems that we don't oft get to see hereabouts nowadays. PURITY IN MOTION (Program 1) 23 – 25 October 2020 FSU Center for the Performing Arts George Balanchine's Donizetti Variations Ricardo Graziano's Amorosa Paul Taylor's Company B BEYOND EXPRESSION (Program 2) 20 – 21 November 2020 Sarasota Opera House Sir Frederick As
  16. BIRMINGHAM ROYAL BALLET’S CINDERELLA SIR DAVID BINTLEY’S ENCHANTING FAIRYTALE BALLET TO BE STREAMED TO MARK THE END OF BIRMINGHAM ROYAL BALLET’S HOME FROM HOME SERIES Birmingham’s Royal Ballet’s celebrated production of Cinderella will be broadcast in full on Birmingham Royal Ballet’s website and Facebook page to mark the end of its online Home from Home series. 17. This arrived in my inbox this afternoon: Dear Birmingham Royal Ballet Supporter I am delighted to update you on some of the wonderful work that has been taking place behind the scenes here, and to update you specifically on Carlos Acosta’s plans for this autumn and Christmas. Before I do however, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our Friends and Dancers’ Circle supporters, and to everyone who has made a donation to our #BeRightBack campaign over the last few months. O
  18. A thread for any thoughts arising from the BBC's "Proms" season this year: archive recordings until a couple of weeks before the end of the season, by which time we should be getting some live concerts, even if their current programmes are as yet unspecified. My first, rather random, thought: is Rossini's overture to Semiramide as reminiscent of the music for La Sylphide as I thought it was on Wednesday?
  19. The Vail Dance Festival, as spearheaded by the extraordinary Damian Woetzel, has announced a Digital Festival. Details of such are as follows - We are thrilled to bring you the Vail Dance Festival: Digital Edition July 31-August 7, 2020! This special online series of events will feature unique performances from the past 10 years including debuts and revivals that have only been seen in Vail, a world premiere choreographed by Bobbi Jene Smith made in, and for, the virtual space, plus
  20. Looks like help might be on its way (zoom in on the embedded front page):
  21. Northern Ballet has issued an End of Season announcement. The dancers leaving the company have been listed but they have stated there will be no promotions due to the C-19 pandemic and new dancers cannot yet be announced. https://northernballet.com/blogs/northern-ballet/20-07-01/2020-leavers I feel so sad for the dancers who have retired having missed their valedictory performances due to the pandemic. Of course this has affected many dancers in many companies. The leavers are Hannah Bateman (retiring), Nicola Gervasi (retiring), Nina Querioz da Silva, Abi
  22. It’s been almost three months since the full-ballet streamings began. Is anyone else beginning to experience Stream Fatigue? How many hours in each day do we have? Not that I’m not grateful. Just sayin’. 😏
