Vaganova Academy Boys Documentary
Yaffa replied to Naomi M's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Actually while Vaganova Academy exams are always recorded, only a few are now put online, and students are apparently threatened with expulsion if they post an exam on social media without permission. (According to the excellent blog of melmoth (https://melmoth.blog/) it is the individual teacher who get to decide if his/her class' exam appears online). -
Lara Spencer comments re Prince George (ballet shaming)
Yaffa replied to Mamaderuby's topic in Doing Dance
Definitely the presenter should have known better, but who knows what script she was given, who else was behind this serious incident, who failed to prevent it from being challenged within the studio. The apology - whoever drafted it - seemed carefully crafted to reduce damage, but I guess that's hardly surprising.... What I'd really like to see, after the matter has faded from the spotlight, is for the entire production team to be exposed first-hand to what ballet and ballet training is really about, and sharing their findings in a widely broadast programme. -
Lara Spencer comments re Prince George (ballet shaming)

The presenter apologised: https://edition.cnn.com/2019/08/23/entertainment/lara-spencer-prince-george-ballet-trnd/index.html -
An optician's assistant said she once advised a ballet dancer not to get bifocal/multifocal glasses for use offstage, as she thought it might mess around with her ability to guage distances etc. on stage. I'd be interested to know if this is correct and what dancers do in practice.

I do hope that going down to London for the evening will soon become a reality from many places. Even better if they could bring back the possibility to catch a train down to London for a weekday morning meeting without spending hundreds of pounds. Oh well, we can dream...

There are several critical comments following the video. It would be great if the presenters could be shown first-hand what a great opportunity young boys and girls are getting by learning ballet...and perhaps they could then spread the word... -
Who knows what will actually happen, but amidst all the promises, it was good to hear that they're planning to run the Euston-Manchester service later in the night - though I heard it's likely to be only on weekdays and starting from next year...

So very sorry to hear of the loss of such a wise, thoughtful and kind person. Indeed he will be very much missed...

How was the Paquita Mazurka on the main ROH stage and with an orchestra? I'm used to seeing YouTube videos of Vaganova students performing this in very grand settings.... Maybe that's why the Holland Park version seemed lacking, despite some obviously talented and enthusiastic young dancers. Unfortunately I couldn't get to the ROH matinee.

I just called Opera Holland Park and was told that they are not sure how long the performances later this week will last, but they will probably be under 2 1/2 hours including the interval. If anyone knows more I'd be grateful. Also if anyone is driving to/from the North (ideally around the Manchester/Cheshire area), I'd be intererested to contribute towards expenses in exchange for a ride - Please PM me with details. Many thanks!

Don't see this online yet...?

Really sympathise - Been there done that many times. I guess it's understandable that some special deals are used to get rid of slow-moving/short-dated stock, and it's certainly good to pay particular attention to the dates. But often, when I've asked a store manager, they have allowed a substitution or have given a voucher to obtain a particular item later or from a different branch....
