  1. My dd did this course a couple of years ago and was able to combine college and her degree at the same time, happy to answer any questions although been a few changes there with staff in the last couple of years.
  2. Finding this entertaining, what annoys me is the dancers egos and there attitude when assigned roles. It is good to see how they are developing as dancers but no matter what size, age or any thing else there is a etiquette in a ballet class that some seem to be unaware of [just my opinion].
  3. My dd was offered her degree place [bA hons in dance, performance and teaching] only on her dance level and grades making up the required UCAS points not on A levels [does not have any A levels or BTEC's] and completed this by the age of 19 now doing her PGCE. All activities are important but you have to show that the skills learnt are transferable and useful in what ever you decide to do or apply for.
  4. At the end of the day they are looking at the child's potential do not worry about leotard colour, hair or lipstick. Yes be prepared but calm down and enjoy the experience, think about any questions you have for them as remember as this is where you child could be living for the next few years, you are auditioning them as well. Remember this is just the start of a long journey that can take lots of different paths.
  5. My daughter has just finished at Preston college, she was offered places for post 16 training at more reconised schools like Tring but we had to take funding into account and that her dream was to teach, Stella mann do allow some students to do the ISTD DDI's and DDE's. At Preston college they continue in the vocational grades in tap, ballet, modern and national taking the teaching exams in ISTD, also RAD vocational level [ a few did the RAD cirtificate or deploma in Ballet Studies/ dance teaching with the surport of the college], they also have classes in jazz and comptempary. My dd's ballet teach also teaches at Northern Ballet most of the graduates go on to work on cruise ships or they can continue on to Ba in Dance at UCLAN [Foundational degree is taught at Preston college ]. my dd did 3 years at college gaining her DDI's and DDE's in Modern, Ballet and national, in her second year at college at 18 transfered on to the foundation degree which she completed in that year, this last year she completed her Ba Hons in Dance performance and Teaching with a high 2;1 her foundation degree was a 1st in Professional Dance Pratice, the foundation degree was delivered by the teachers at Preston College.Enterance to the college is by audition, and like most colleges the perform in a dance show and cheography show. Preston college worked out very well for my daughter who has acheived so much in three years and is now working as a teacher.
  6. My dd has always been taught to say 2 positive things to each negative point and it depends on there age and understanding, we learn best by positive reinforcement.
  7. When we took are children to their first ballet class or first exam I did it not expecting them to do any thing else other have fun, make friends and learn new things, as my dd grew her love and passion grew for ballet and dance in general grew. As parents the dance world is a strange world to most of us, we were guided by are dd who knew what she wanted, offered places at vocational school at 11 and 16 but no funding so was lucky to be offered a CAT place at 12, now 19 she is just finishing her BA[Hons] in Dance, Performance and Teaching as well as doing advanced grades at college and dance teaching qualifications, their is more then 1 way to achieve your dream, yes you have to be realistic but by doing ballet my child learnt more than how to point her feet, she learnt respect, confidence and many other skills. At 16 you should have a good idea or at least have by doing the audition process but you should also have a backup plan.
  8. My dd loved P.E,. her year head was also head of P.E. in unhocky no one was allowed to tackle her in case they hit her ankles so she always had a clear run. Most schools are supportive but are unaware of how much are children do outside school. As a parent I was unwilling to let her do ice-skating now 19 dance is her career and she is a flyer in an adult cheer-leading group for fun.
  9. My dd is writing her dissertation on body image and the effects on a ballet dancer compared to a contemporary dancer. She has found that dancers/teachers do not want there to be problems. In both areas the audience wants and expects slim dancers with 'nice lines', the problem that is most worrying is the amount of damage on the dancers body and the lack of information and advice some dancers receive.
  10. In are experience the class is stopped while the boy is taught, boys are given more encouragement be it in normal class, festivals, and vocational school. Is this 'free school' going to cater for dancers [ballet and contemporary ] or a mixture of dance styles like hip-hop, Irish, commercial jazz. A higher proportion of boys do street dance and this is seen as 'more exceptionable ' , in my opinion it is not another school that is required that will segregate dance boys but a strategy that will change stereotypes and make boys dancing except-able.
  11. Correct me if I am wrong but making dance more accessible for males, closer to home, financially more achievable and separate classes for both sexes as required is already in place with the CAT scheme?
  12. I agree that there should be more boys in the ballet world, but think that this should be addressed pre secondary school and become an excepted part in our society. As a parent of a daughter we have often seen that vocational schools seem to have more scholarships for boys and that 'boys need to be encouraged', both sex need help especially financial. It should be even for girls and boys and each person should be judged on their own merits if we continue to favor either sex the problem will continue to grow.
