  1. Thank you for posting the link to that fascinating and still relevant discussion …. lots of bells ringing for me , finding out why all those BBC serials seemed so flat and of course, the empowering aspects of Ballet Shoes. Funnily enough have been discussing that theme recently with ref to other books of our childhood.
  2. The Wicharts was Ballet Shoes mark 1 but absolutely not written for children.
  3. I am in two minds about this ….while the life-long Ballet Shoes fan in me would like to see it, the voice of reason reminds me that I didn’t like the earlier, fairly faithful BBC series where nothing was re-imagined , spectacularly or otherwise. Suppose the best way would be to consider it as a modern version, based on an original idea by NS … a bit like the difference between The Wicharts and Ballet Shoes .
  4. Thoroughly enjoyed the Wed evening cast. It was the 1st time I had seen this production live - rather than at a live streaming ( Lauren Cuthbertson & William Bracewell) - so was adjusting to the different view point - up in the amphitheatre with an excellent view of the safety light behind the rocks … oh and the splendid swan corps -de-ballet. I found Yasmin Naghdi’s Odile utterly mesmerising - that balance, those fouettés and the exquisite nastiness under a beautiful mask anll of which helped me appreciate her Odette even more in Act 4. I have booked again for the June run ( Claire Calvert and Nicol Edmonds) so look forward to being able to see or notice different interpretations then .
  5. I didn't "get" the people in black rolling all over the stage, in fact I found them irritating, possibly because we had no indication on the stupid online cast sheet of who or what they were. Nor did we know the young men were called "Dogs Neither did I. Although it was interesting to note the rolling technique I couldn’t quite understand their place in the narrative … And agree with you about all the ‘vocalisations’ , I wasn’t quite sure what they added .
  6. My 1st time booking on the day ( well, the night ) of General Booking and it’s been rather a mixed experience. Yes, I managed to buy tickets in the seating areas I was after to 3 performances ( an Ashton, Swan Lake w Claire Calvert and the RBS @ the Next Generation) plus a spur of the moment ticket to see the ENBS @ Next Generation . But now I understand earlier posts about keeping extra windows open to try and book multiple performances within 30 mins . I ran out of time twice- the 1st time because I was unfamiliar with the process, the 2nd time because I was trying in vain to redeem a gift certificate. Decided that it would be better to book at that point rather than wait till Friday at the earliest so started again and just paid by card. Slightly miffed to realise that I had ended up making that ‘help the ROH’ donation by stealth too . Would that it could go towards the ‘improved website’ fund . Ridiculous o’clock at night is not the time to email the ROH and ask for advice but definitely need to do so before long. The page wouldn’t ‘move’ after I had keyed in the certificate code/ not even to tell me it wasn’t recognised. The gift certificate was worth less than the total of the ticket but surely it should be possible to pay the excess …or perhaps not ?
  7. A bit late from Wed night . Had to persuade myself to book for the triple bill in the 1st place - but somewhat to my surprise, I am so glad I did. Found Danses Concertantes great fun, enjoyed watching and watching out for the steps, patterns and precision. I did wonder about the wigs and hats/headdresses , perhaps they made more sense at the time when people wore hats more often? Plus surely the original costumes wouldn’t have been ‘lycra unitards’ ? Different Drummer - I wouldn’t go as far as saying I enjoyed it , but found that I really could appreciate the choreography and the fantastic performances. Would I see it again ? Probably -which is a massive change in attitude. Requiem was breathtaking & exhilarating !!! I just ‘leant’ into the wonderful music , movement and the glorious light and the time sped past . I was reminded a bit of ‘sports acrobatics’ - the trust , the waves of group movement at different levels and the way in which the company was also moving as one.
  8. Interesting points . For what it’s worth, I have seen fairly regular posts about the MacMillan triple bill on Instagram. But as was mentioned earlier, with zero information about the 3 ballets themselves. I really was in 2 minds about booking …even or perhaps especially when I looked up the ballets - but eventually took the plunge and have bought a seat for opening night. Not in the price range to be discounted though - were I ever to splash out to that degree, it would have to be for something I absolutely wanted to see, such as Fille.
  9. ‘An evening very well spent however! And I found the video projections before each piece a great way to transition the audience. ‘ Another thank you to this forum for my great evening at the ROH last night . It was only when reading this thread at the weekend that I actually realised that there were performances on the main stage . The video clips really illuminated each work for me, and gave me pointers on what to look out for .
  10. Once again thanks to this forum for alerting me to La Strada and the chance to see both Alina Cojocaru & Johann Kobborg dance - what a memorable afternoon. I enjoyed Sunday’s performance very much - the reviews on here meant that I didn’t try to follow the plot in Act 2 but just concentrated on the beautiful quality of movement and the colours. The music gave me space to connect to the emotion in the ballet too. I do agree about the Sadlers Wells website as encountered on my phone . It’s often quite tricky to find the performances you want as opposed to ones they wish to promote.
  11. Thank you - I was able to watch some of this morning. Was very taken with the 1st backdrop ( somewhat to my surprise ) and found the choreography fascinating .
  12. Thank you. I thought it was him. Quite pleasing to know that it is possible to recognise someone on stage from halfway up the amphitheatre! I enjoyed Thursday evening’s performance immensely. Having seen the Nutcracker screening both this year and last , it was lovely to see it in real life at the ROH and to be able to concentrate on different aspects of the ballet (such as exactly what the White Lodge students dance/ act ) and all the little bits of action on the sidelines. And the general atmosphere and displays around the ROH too.
