  1. I know this is very late, but I'm going to write my thoughts anyway. I didn't watch the contemporaries. I thought Winter Dreams wasn't so desperate especially near the ending and that last kiss. Morera is great acting wise and Hirano was also pretty good, but his dancing was a bit wooden and not very desperate. I love Voices of Spring. O'Sullivan and Sambe are lovely pairing, really love their performance. So joyful and their chemistry is so on point. Unfortunately, I'm quite disappointed with Sleeping Beauty. It's probably because I'm spoiled with Nunez and Muntagirov's performance back in the 2017 stream. Their solos are great, but overall I love their previous performance more and it seems that Vadim has problems with his double cabrioles that day (?) It almost looks like single cabrioles. Also the orchestra was way too slow in Sleeping Beauty. The highlight for me in Sleeping Beauty however is Hinkis. Her Princess Florine's variation is so musical!

From where I was looking on opening night, O'Sullivan's wig was very much of its time, which reminds me: I respect the ROH costume department a lot, and I'm all for sticking to the original designs unless there's good reason not to, but I think they have a blind spot about the wigs for 70s and early 80s designs (see also Manon and Nutcracker). I think all too often they just look a bit silly to the modern eye and nothing would be lost with some updating.

I actually like Manon's wig, well except the act 3 wig

  3. Like I said before I will make the review of the rest of the stream when I have time to watch it, now I finally get the time to watch the rest of the stream (I don't watch DAAG though). I like Ball's Apollo I thought he dance and interpret his role really well. I like that part when he realise his power as a god. Like someone said here he doesn't have Muntagirov's lines (I can only judge from pictures as I can't attend the live show), but his Apollo is great and worth to watch. The muses danced their roles well too, I really like their acting and expressions. I thought that the whole performance is great and worth to watch

I'm slightly disappointed that the SB cast for the streamed performance is Nunez & Muntagirov. Before anyone screams at me, I'm not doubting that they'll do it brilliantly. It's just that they've already been recorded in a complete SB so it would be nice, especially for archive purposes, to have a different leading couple filmed.

Agreed. I would rather see them together in winter dreams tbh (curious about it)

  5. I just watched the stream and brought my friend along. I'm only able to watch the tchai pdd at the moment, will write more after I watch the other 2 performances (I'm planning to watch Apollo, I don't know if I would watch DAAG). Nunez and Muntagirov are just so awesome in this, just when I think that the rehearsal last year was good, this is more or less even better. They are just pretty much perfection (I use the word pretty much because I believe that nothing is perfect in this world). Really love Muntagirov's entrechat, I don't know it's just so pleasing to look at, those double tours are so good, and most of all I like his manege, it's fast, powerful, and it looks so light and effortless. I also love Nunez's petit allegro and how she dances on the beat. I love how they use their hands and arms too. And of course I really love the sheer joy that they show. My friend who don't watch ballet as much as I do was also impressed. He loved how Muntagirov dance on the beat and how he beautifully use his feet during his solo variation. Now I'm looking forward to watch Matthew Ball's Apollo when I can. I'm sorry if I probably get some terminologies wrong, I don't dance but I do some research sometimes on the technique/terminologies and I'm still trying to understand them

The Royal Opera House has announced details for its 2021/22 Season, the first full Season since 2019.

Opening on Monday 13 September, the Season includes five world premieres from The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera, classic revivals and an exciting roster of international and UK talent performing across the two stages of the Royal Opera House.

In its 90th anniversary year, The Royal Ballet presents a Season that respects the past and heralds the future. Three world premieres, including Wayne McGregor’s The Dante Project, Christopher Wheeldon’s Like Water for Chocolate and a new work by American choreographer Kyle Abraham, are performed alongside much-loved 19th-century classics and heritage ballets by Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan. The Linbury Theatre hosts a raft of partnerships and co-productions including with Ballet Black, Alessandra Ferri, Yorke Dance Project and a world premiere from Company Wayne McGregor. Creative opportunities for emerging talent will also feature with Draft Works and the Next Generation Festival. The Season culminates in July 2022 with The Royal Ballet making a welcome return to international touring with a three-week tour of Japan where the Company will perform Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon and Peter Wright’s Giselle.

I would like to see Naghdi/Muntagirov cast together more often; they are both so musical and magnetic, along with the technical wizardry.

Also acting wise I think in R&J it would be heartbreaking. Saw Naghdi in R&J stream and imo she has the most heartbreaking silent scream in the end. I couldn't see a performance live as I'm not from London, but I saw a review that said that Muntagirov as Romeo showed a wide range of emotions from joy, heartbreak, and anger. I think both of them combined might also be spectacular acting wise (hopefully)

I saw Nureyev's first (of only five with the RB) Des Grieux. Merle Park as Manon, Desmond Kelly as Lescaut, Lesley Collier as his mistress, David Drew as the Gaoler and Georgina Parkinson as his mistress (then a named role). Of course Derek Rencher as GM, and Wayne Sleep as the beggar chief.

Weirdly it was a one-off performance in July, separate from the first run in March 1974 and the second lot in November that year.

Do not know why Nureyev only danced the role five times - does anyone else here know?

I never knew that Nureyev danced Des Grieux- interesting

Oh yes I’d forgotten there are inconsistencies on ROH website, and even in this letter announcing Sergei Polunin’s promotion ahead of the Cuban tour.  I have not had an answer to my queries about it ( no website resources at ROH during pandemic).

In June 2009 he would have been 19, as his birthday is 20 November 1989.

I've just found that the promotion announcement from ROH's facebook was in June 2010

For accuracy ... Marianela Nunez was indeed 20 when promoted to principal, both Sergei Polunin and Alina Cojocaru were 19.

    Other young age promotions are:

    Darcey Bussell - 20

Johan Kobborg - principal at Royal Danish at 22

Vadim Muntagirov - principal at ENB at 21

Cesar Corrales himself - Principal at ENB at age 21

Sylvie Guillem - etoile at 19

These kind of talents are very rare indeed.

Wait is that accurate tho? Because judging from when Polunin was born (1989 according to wikipedia) he would be 20 or 21 in 2010

Whilst RoH has covered this with solid recruitment (for example Muntagirov and Ospiova), much of the internal promotions have been solid rather than spectacular. Few people are rushing to grab tickets to see them perform the principal roles and whilst I have enjoyed O'Sullivan - little sets Magri apart from many of the other First Soloists in my opinion as a Member of CG and a paying spectator, regardless of what internally RoH think.

While of course other people and I have their own favourites, I do think that there must be something that make these dancers spectacular in their own way

Nothing personal, but I would put Kaneko, then Stix-Brunell ahead of Magri for promotion to Principal.  It may be that I’ve seen less of Magri in Principal roles but I see Kaneko and Stix-Brunell as more rounded dancers (and the latter’s acting is also excellent).  Like James, I was surprised not to see Kaneko promoted after her stellar performance in Sleeping Beauty.

I too would like to see Hay promoted to Principal; unlike alison I wouldn’t put him ahead of Ball technically but he is a beautiful dancer with wonderful stage presence and one I always look forward to watching.

If she hasn’t already been mentioned, I’d like to see Annette Buvoli promoted, along with Leticia Dias.

Oh my God yes for Buvoli. I really like her stage presence, I remember her in Coppelia
