Could anyone tell me whether Tring allow boarders to go home every weekend if they want? We live fairly close (although not close enough to consider being a day student) and I was wondering if we could potentially pick up Fri evening and drop off  Monday morning each week. I am planning to go to their open day in Jan so can ask then but just wondering if anyone might know....thank you!

Yes they can go home at the weekends.  Year 9 upwards do have RAD and ISTD lessons (then Y10/11 also add in Cecchetti lessons) at the weekends though.  These lessons aren’t compulsory though I don’t think.

I am sorry but I have obviously either misread or misunderstood something in the posts.  I was in no way taking anything away from the achievements of those who have places at WL or any other dance school, vocational or otherwise, for that matter.  I thought I was answering as to where the information about what training and experience dancers have was coming from.  To quote me as having said that the children are "seasoned performance professionals" is so far away from what I believe.  A child starting in year 7 at vocational school is only at the start of a journey and regardless of their prior learning and experience will go back to basics and schools are looking for someone with potential.  Apologies if I have offended anyone.

Sorry, I was replying to an earlier message that you had replied to and quoting the original poster not you!

Social media: teachers and pupils are all posting results.

You are making very big assumptions and speculating and generalising un-necessarily here - I can’t even begin to work out how you can say that all those children are “seasoned performance professionals” - honestly?  And so what if they are?

    I am beyond baffled.
How about we simply say well done to the children and wish them good luck at whatever school they may be attending, vocational or otherwise.  That old mantra - be kind.

I do not know if anyone noticed, but the most of girls who got WL yes this year were seasoned performance professionals having a history of either performance with the professional ballet company or on/near on West End or in top dance competitions. This is a massive part to achieve success in WL audition - being able to perform. Having a track record to be a safe pair of hands/feet in past.   I think it was one of the most dicisive factor between candidates this year. Yes, you have to have a right physique, amazing facility and musicality, but without performance these will not stand out. Please correct me if I am wrong about this, but none of the extra classes could give you this special magic.

    How do you know this????

My Dd stepped off this mad rollercoaster at the end of Year 11 she had places at 3 Upper Schools. It is not a level playing field at all...... I do wish my Dd had stayed at home until 16 in a nurturing environment.  For those of you starting the vocational school journey be honest about how it is going and keep talking.  We sat down each summer and discussed if this was what Dd still wanted.  It is very easy to get caught up in it all, and not want to get left behind. Many of Dd's peers were doing multiple Summer Schools... Easter Courses ... private lessons.... extra associate classes on top of vocational school to try and get noticed - it doesn't come cheap.

Absolutely this!  Being honest with your children, talking openly about options regularly and ensuring your child knows that they can jump off the train if it’s not for them , has to be the way to do this!

  8. I do think it’s important to remember that this last year has been really different aswell. Dance schools offered varying levels of classes through zoom during the Lockdowns (some had a super limited timetable, or offered nothing, some offered a full timetable etc), so naturally people may have looked elsewhere ... and there was lots available! Anyone with access to social media could find free ballet classes or teachers offering new online classes for all age ranges.

And it’s also important to consider that just because multiple schools are posting the success of these children, doesn’t necessarily mean the children are “still” doing classes with them .... maybe it’s an opportunity for that teacher/dance school to celebrate that they’ve had some part in that child’s training at some point over the last couple of years or so??

Maybe this is naive of me, but I am super wary of social media!!

I know what you mean. We replied yes as thought we could use a home test (our area doesn’t do asymptomatic testing) to later find out these aren’t accepted.

I’d suggest calling with auditions team tomorrow and asking what the process will be and for some reassurance. The deadline for replying to the invite was yesterday so hopefully there’ll be an email update in the next few working days.

Not sure if you’ve seen the latest email but they will accept a home test as long as you can report the results either via the government website or test and trace app 🙂

thanks, there was mention somewhere that lateral flow tests from schools couldn’t be entered into the app only onto the gov website so I rang 119 to see which lateral flow tests you could enter into the app and they had no idea! Someone had said the school had said the government website one was ok also though but if I can I want to try get one on the app too

You enter the results in test and trace when you go to an NHS testing centre (so if you have symptoms). All the work based lateral flow tests are entered through the government website but you still get a result from the NHS which is the evidence that Royal want to see.

  11. Just so everyone knows, the school tests can’t be registered on the Test and Trace app as the barcode has to be reported to the government website rather than the app but you do then get a follow up result email from the NHS, which I have just confirmed with Royal is acceptable!
I just wanted to clarify with them that there  didn’t have to be evidence in our Test and Trace apps!

Thought I’d let everyone know so nobody panics when you don’t get a code to input into the Test and trace app!

Depends on why you think your children are there I guess. With both of mine they’ve gone to their schools because it was the right school experience for them, and it’s allowed them to pursue something that they love to a level that wouldn’t have been possible if they’d stayed at home. For us it has never been about turning them into professional dancers, it was a way of keeping that option open to them if that was the career they wished to go for. Don’t lose sight of the fact that it is ‘just school’, not a life or death decision.

    Love this

Just found out  Dumlers Pharmacy in Richmond  offers rapid antigen tests and they are 69 pounds.

The stress of sourcing a test has at least distracted me from the the stress of ds attending an audition class at such a prestigious school.

Just make sure that the results are officially reported and you get a certificate. I have phoned a few places local to me that offer rapid Antigen testing but they just tell you the result rather than getting an official report confirming it!

so the fact that they’ve suggested the school does it must mean they are happy with this sort of test? The test that has been given to me is from a healthcare worker so has a barcode on it. But as mentioned above they’ve also said home tests are not accepted so it’s like they aren’t sure completely themselves.  As I say I hope they do clarify over the next few days

You will report the results of that test to the NHS (using the barcode) and get an official email and text confirming the test result, the name and DOB of the person taking the test.

I thought one of the concerns was reading the result yourself from the test kit? Is that how the lateral flow test kits given to staff work?

I really hope they accept all the different variants of the test, and supply their own if people need them and hope all the children stay healthy and symptoms free.

All the lateral flow tests that are being used by teaching staff and healthcare workers are self administered and self reported to the NHS.  Even the secondary school children will be self administering their own tests at home once they have been shown how to do it over the first few weeks back at school ....!

Hi lovely. I had a response from royal ballet by email saying you couldn't do a home test...maybe email them and ask if yours is OK. I sent them a link for an mhra approved one and the bupa one but they told me I would have to book an appointment somewhere x

That’s not what I was told! They were quite happy with a self administered school test as long as the results were reported! As far as I am aware, most lateral flow tests are self administered even if you book to have it done somewhere - it’s only the antigen and pcr tests that are carried out by a healthcare worker/professional?
