  1. The cover email that was sent out with the casting included the following paragraph: ”'Please find attached the latest casting for Ashton Celebrated which begins in two months’ time. I do apologise that these are reaching you later than we had planned; due to a number of factors the casting has been in flux, so we did not want to give you incorrect information. You have received this email because you are a Friend of the Royal Opera House.
  2. In the text it says half price for local students and senior citizens. I wish we had the latter reduction in London.

  4. Sportsmen & women and ballet dancers can be at the top of their field of expertise but IMHO if they’re posting about e.g. a scented candle then they’re no different from any other ‘influencer’.
  5. the ROH is not alone in doing this but is one of the few organisations that doesn't also charge a Booking Fee. it seems to be common practice among many arts organisations these days to add a suggested donation and let the purchaser decide to leave or remove it. some are a flat fee, some a %age of the total ticket price. other organisations impose a 'building levy fee' or 'building restoration fee' which cannot be removed. many organisations including, Sadlers Wells, charge a booking fee which the ROH doesn't as yet and which is more than the £3 asked as a donation by the ROH. the advantage to all being that, if you qualify and have ticked the Gift Aid box, the ROH receives an additional amount from the government over and above your donation. a clever move IMHO.
  6. I found much to enjoy last night both in terms of choreography, orchestration and narrative. Minju Kang was stunning in the lead role of Carmen (a femme fatale par excellence) alongside Rentaro Nakaaki as a deeply tormented Don José and James Streeter as an arrogant Zuniga. If you're a fan of Erik Woolhouse then his Torero is not to be missed. I am already looking forward to seeing it again with other casts.
  7. saying this with tongue in cheek, IMHO, "an influencer" is a Pied Pier, a leader of lemmings. I'm minded of King Louie singing "I Wanna Be Like You' to Mowgli in The Jungle Book.
  8. if the 'picnic populace' is herded downstairs then that would, at least hypothetically, free up the space upstairs.
  9. Perhaps, on nights when it is ‘dark’ the Linbury bar area could be designated as a public picnic area in the same way that museums have a discrete area hidden in their bowels for school groups and families to eat.
  10. Also, if you go on an opera night , the consumption of food brought from home seems to me to be much more visible all over the ROH including on the stairwells and landings. At a recent Flying Dutchman I almost tripped over a couple picnicking on a stairwell and narrowly avoided becoming the Flying Englishman!.

There’s one long time visitor to the ROH who arrives with a bag full of food and wine purchased elsewhere that is brought out and enjoyed with their party of friends in plain sight of staff and other patrons both before a performance and in the intervals. This struck me as being odd when I became a regular at the ROH several years ago but it continues to this day. If I was minded to eat and drink before or during a show I would take this example as a precedent for it being ok to bring my own comestibles and bagging a table. Experience, however, has taught me that eating or drinking close to a performance spikes my blood sugar and makes me doze off regardless of how much I want to watch the action onstage. An expensive nap in so many ways! and so now I eat and drink elsewhere so that I can fully enjoy a performance.
  12. I’ve just googled Acosta Danza Carmen and according to the Cuba 50 website: ”Carlos Acosta now presents and features in his own adaptation of Georges Bizet and Prosper Mérimée’s story. In his new version, the story’s universal and timeless themes are laid bare in a sparse and powerful setting.” * This suggests to me that Carlos will dance… can anyone confirm this? *ref: www.cuba50.org

  16. It was showing sold out at 9am, I refreshed my screen and there were a few tickets available. £25-£250 Not often that I get lucky. It went some way to negate the disappointment for not getting tickets to the other performance.

  21. Tonight (26.03.23) Paris has une nouvelle Étoile in the sky. Bluenn Battistoni was promoted on stage at the Palais Garnier at the end of this evening’s La Fille Mal Gardée. A standing ovation of many minutes was given by an appreciative audience. On the way out I overheard an audience member say “I don’t know who he [Colas] was but he should have been promoted too. He was referring to RB principal Marcelino Sambé! who danced his socks off in his second guest appearance here.

If a seat hasn’t been sold it has to show as available to purchase in the listing. e.g. 4 MAY 2024 SATURDAY, 7PM MAIN STAGE GUIDANCE: Content suitable for all. However, NOT all available seats can be purchased by everyone as some may be held back for the time being, for want of a better description, for special interest groups e.g. YROH, Access, RBS and who knows who else. This is why when we click on ‘Buy tickets’ we get: “Please sign in before choosing your seats in order to access prices available to you. To register for wheelchair spaces, please contact box office. How would you like to find your seats? Use our seatmap It would be MUCH clearer if the message said « … in order to access THE SEATS and prices available to you … » If, after clicking on “use our seatmap”, whether I am logged in or not, the seat map shows no availability, it means that the ‘available’ seats are NOT available for ME to purchase at the present time. However, they ARE available for purchase by the special interest groups for which they have been set aside. They WILL show up as visible on the seating plan if someone logs in who belongs to one of these special interest groups. It’s a frustrating system at the best of times but once one understands how and why it is set up in such a way it does sort of make sense. NB when tickets go on general sale on Wednesday (thanks @LinMM) every seating plan will include lots of seats which are reserved for sale to special interest groups. They will not be identifiable. Only in instances when all tickets available to you and me are sold but some reserved for special interest groups remain unsold will the anomaly in availability be ‘visible’.
