  1. Do you mean a scholarship or a bursary? Just clarifying as they refer to separate things at YBSS - they award scholarships after the scholarship auditions (based purely on those auditions) and then there is also the possibility of getting a bursary if you have a place at the intensive but you need financial assistance based on income. I'm not sure how the bursaries work but in terms of the scholarships, yes you can absolutely still get a place on the course even if you weren't successful in getting a scholarship after the scholarship auditions. Most of the children who are there will not have been successful in getting a scholarship.
  2. It's a couple of years since one of my DC was at an in-person audition as the last time we applied it was online, but essentially it involves: - standing in different positions facing the panel, like standing (in bare feet) to the front, straight legs and in plie in first, then to the side and with bent knees (legs parallel). Sitting down with legs straight ahead, showing pointed feet and flexed feet. Pike fold, box splits, frogs I think- that kind of thing. - some barre work, including plies and tendus. - centre work including sautés and things like gallops and 'pony trots' from the corner. Spring points I think too. - improv, which involves listening to a piece of music and moving to it from a seated or kneeling position. Once year they were told to be seaweed, I think another year it was trees in the wind, that kind of thing. Someone will no doubt be able to say if it was significantly different last year. It's all fairly basic and they are looking for potential at this stage. It's quite a fun class I believe.
  3. I’m not sure but that seemed to be the way it worked last year I think. There were a few different groups doing the online classes. Interestingly, you can now put the online course as your first choice on the form when you apply (which will work well for some people if you can’t travel to a centre etc).
  4. There are often people who join in Y6 - new people joined our old centre each of the 3 years that my first DC was there, some from each year group. I can't speak for all the centres but often on this forum people get a Yes in Y5 or Y6 after a previous No or wait list. Always worth a shot if your DC is keen and you think they would enjoy the audition process! We always treat the audition as fun day out in itself.
  5. I don't know how many in total across all the centres but the annual reports on the school website give the figures from a few years ago. In terms of strict numbers for each centre, no - it can be fluid and changes slightly from year to year. There will be a max number per class (and I imagine a minimum number to make the classes financially viable) but no, it's not a hard and fast number per centre in my experience. Some centres have one mixed age/sex group and others have several classes split by age and/or sex.
  6. Just thought I'd start a thread for anyone thinking of applying this year. The annual thread has usually been a very helpful place to ask questions or share experiences. We've just taken the pics and will be applying today. Our experience with the JA programme has been very positive and I've had 2 children participate now. After a somewhat circuitous route, we are now applying for a Y6 place, as my second DC has decided to audition again after doing Y4 and then choosing not to do Y5 due to some logistical issues! All of that to explain that we've been through this process a fair few times now, as have others on the forum, so please feel free to ask any questions!
  7. There is a lot of back and forth - yes! Bear in mind that it can take a little while for a taxi to make its way out to WL after reception call it for you - you might have to wait 15/20 mins for it to arrive. If you know anyone else who is going then another parent might give you a lift back out to Richmond - we found people were extremely helpful in that respect. It's also a lovely walk if it's a nice day and you've got time to kill anyway - about 40 mins to Richmond or less to Sheen.
  8. Thank you @BisforBallet - good to know. We're a couple of years off SB MA but that does sound easier once SB moves to a Saturday.
  9. Agree with the answers you've already had but in terms of drop off day, it is usually the day before the first day of the course. For week 1 that will be Monday 17th but for all the other weeks it will be the Sunday. Week 1 has slightly different dates (as in it starts on a Tuesday) to the other weeks. Phones are handed in overnight but they can use them whenever they are not in class through the day. This has never been problematic in our experience and there was lots of time spent running around/playing outside as well. I don't think DD was on her phone much at all - that's our experience of course and it maybe depends on who else is there at the time.
  10. We are trying to decide whether to apply for JAs in Dundee (rather than the centre we used to go to) and one of the factors making me hesitant is whether there are often clashes with the Scottish Ballet monthly sessions on a Sunday. I think I read on here that they try to coordinate the dates now to avoid clashes - is that correct? If anyone has any insight it would be really useful to know as I don't want to apply and then find we can't make half the sessions (either of RB or SB) anyway - thanks!
  11. That wasn't the case last year either - I'm not sure if it ever has been but others may know more. If you do receive a White Lodge offer, though, then I understand you are generally invited to SI too, even if you haven't applied for it or if you had received a wait list place.
  12. Well done and hopefully some of those WL places will turn into offers (ours did, the first year of applying). DC2 has a Yes for Week 1 and another of my DC will be there later in the summer. Do feel free to message if you haven't done it before and have any questions 😀
  13. It is such an unpredictable process - please don't be too disheartened if it ends up being a No or a Wait List when the email comes in. They seem to offer an awful lot of wait list places and there is often a small amount movement so you never know. As people have said above, we've seen people offered White Lodge who got wait listed for SI, and yesses for SI who didn't get past the first round of auditions for some schools (and every combination of results in between!). The RBS summer intensive is also not the be all and end all of summer courses - there are lots of other great options out there. If you're on social media then it will likely feel like every man and his dog has been offered an RBS summer intensive place, which isn't true of course but it can feel like it when you're sitting with a disappointing email. So if that's the case, then do yourself a favour and avoid insta for the next few days 🙄
  14. To be honest I think the week after next even but likewise - I hope I'm wrong! Next week is half term and I'm not sure if that will have any bearing on it. Keen to know so that I can book a holiday if DC2 doesn't get a place (every cloud and all that!)
  15. Ha, I love how definitive @LinMM is - and I agree if you can drive it then go for that. Didn’t want to put you off if you had to use public transport but I do that journey regularly by train/taxi and yes, it can be an absolute nightmare sometimes! Such a beautiful location, so awkward to get to! You’ll be fine to park.
  16. If you get the train then you’d need to get a taxi from the station in Richmond out to White Lodge - it will cost around £15 and take about 15 mins. If you can drive then it’s probably easier - there is plenty of parking. Just depends where you are coming from really but on the whole it’s more easily accessible by car.
  17. Associate numbers are much higher as there are centres all across the country and they don't really get assessed out during a particular programme unless there are major issues. Once you are in Junior Associates, you would generally stay in until the end of that programme unless you decide to leave (which does happen occasionally). You have to re-audition for the next stage though, so once you're in Y6 you would need to re-audition for Mid Associates, and then again for Senior Associates and so on. There are less places as you go up the age groups, so less children will get a place in MA compared to JA for example. They don't run the older associates in as many centres as they do for junior associates.
  18. That sounds like a much better system - the way they did it last year with the cut after Day 1 sounded brutal. Didn't affect us personally as DC didn't apply there but I know how hard it was for some others and if you had to travel any distance/stay overnight then it was massively unhelpful. Good to hear that it sounds like they've taken the feedback on board.
  19. Thanks - just searched through emails and saw the same but I felt like applications closed earlier this year so maybe results would be out sooner. Perhaps not!
  20. Does anyone know when results are expected this year?
  21. I don't have any experience of LCB as it's nowhere near us geographically but totally agree with the comments above about children wanting to progress 'through the ranks'. I don't think it is limited to ballet either - we have a local musical theatre group who traditionally put on a large scale production each year at the same time (in the same way as LCB). One of my DC is involved and the same children tend to appear year after year, often starting at 8/9 and staying until teenage years. Often the same children feature in principal roles - and why not? They have experience with the director, they have generally started off in the ensemble and they have auditioned and shown that they can hold a part. It's set up as a professional production and it would seem a bit crazy for the director not to cast in the same way as any other professional production.
  22. Pretty similar to @Dancingpotato, although my DC was in a younger age group. A mix of classes throughout the day, always ballet and then things like national, a bit of yoga etc mixed in. Classes are not tiny but at 10 or 11 that wasn't something we were focussed on, I saw it more as a chance for DC to decide if they liked the environment, being away from home for a week and dorm life in general. In the evenings the houseparents organised things like a scavenger hunt, a tiktok challenge and a disco I think on the last night. DC has enjoyed it two years in a row.
