    Hi there,

Just wondering if your dd went to EFB in the end? DS has just been offered a full time place there and we're trying to make decisions so looking for updates on how people are finding it.

DD is there. We have found the ballet teaching and faculty to be excellent and varied with regular performance opportunities too. She is very happy and enjoys the independence of living in Edinburgh ; she's adapted remarkably well considering she's only 16 and hundreds of miles from home. The school promotes a sense of belonging and Peter Schaufuss is actively involved.

When I was looking for my DD, AXA PPP Heatlhcare offered package for her. She was only 16 and quote was for £386

I wanted an alternative and compared it with the one Central school has offered.  Identical cover, identical insurer but the price difference was huge.

    Info from 2018 year x

Was it cheaper through Central or direct with AXA?

  3. Thanks. I've looked through these. All cover seems to require the insured to be 18+ though. I don't have private cover myself so can't add DD on to it.

So I guess my question is, can you insure a 16 year old? And if so, which companies offer this?

Reputation is not particularly important to either of us.. I’d much rather she was happy and received quality training. She is slightly more swayed towards to schools she has heard about for the last few years.

Agree class size would be good to know- EFB are clear but I’m hoping someone can enlighten me about class sizes of the others?!

Good luck with choosing and with the SB audition. Lucky girl to have a choice! X

  5. Things to consider:

    Class size

    Who will be teaching?

    Studios/facilities

What will she get from it that she won't get in her regular training?

Is reputation important to you or your DD? My DD danced for many years as an associate with a small ballet company who don't have the 'big name' reputation and received individual attention, regular pas de deux training and experience with professional dancers and regular performance experience on stage. Her confidence and love of dance grew immeasurably. Invaluable.

We are all decent people that thought ;" wouldn't it be nice to provide further opportunity to help dancers with their contemporary.  Why don't we......."

From the kindness of wanting to help dancers get to their goals. THATS ALL.

No secrey, no blurred lines just trying to help.

    In running this course;

    We help white lodge

    We help students

We are all just trying to help the dancers.  There is nothing underhand......

We thought it would be a treat to use those beautiful studios. That's all!!!

Absolutely, sounds like a fantastic opportunity. Is it open to non-vocational 15 Yr olds who will be embarking on their vocational journey in September 2021?

I don’t envy you being pulled from corner to corner and trying to take the lead from so many different people.........but my dd is at the hammond and all lessons are live And apparently recorded for that ‘safeguarding’ issue,   I am a scout leader and also run zoom events and we make sure that there is 2 adults always in the group and at least 4 Participates signed in !!  I am amazed that you are aloud to email a student without CC a parent or another teacher into the email?   Again as a mother of a Grate Britain athlete no coach is allowed to send a minor an email with out a parent being CC in and it’s the same in scouts!!!!   ........ no reflection on yourself as I know it’s not your fault and most teachers are wanting to get back to what you all do the best xxxx

We use the school email system so it's not personal email addresses that we're using. All emails are tracked and recorded. It's no different to the individual phonecalls we're being asked to make. Unfortunately our school have made the decision that we can't live video link even with 2 members of staff present, (although obviously this would have its own staffing issues anyway!). It's a very difficult time for teachers who have trained and developed their own pedagogy over so many years and I can assure you that we are all desperate to get back to face to face teaching, when it is safe to do so.

The provision is really pretty poor for many, but I don’t blame individual teachers for that. In some cases they’ve been told not to teach online. A huge amount of extra cash seems to have been summoned up for health care, we need to push for that for education. I haven’t written to my MP before but I feel that might have to change! Children have pretty much been forgotten in all of this

Absolutely, Peony. I'm a teacher in a state secondary school and we have been instructed by the Head not to teach by live video for safeguarding reasons. As a teacher of Performing Arts, I would love to be able to teach my kids in a Zoom class because they would really benefit from this 'practical' work and the feedback I could provide, but alas, it has been vetoed. We can upload videos to teach, have email exchanges with individual students and we must provide individual feedback for each piece of work submitted. Work also has to be provided weekly for students without Internet access. I also telephone each of my tutees weekly for a chat. I'm also in telephone contact with parents who request this too.

It's not ideal and I am hugely disappointed for my year10 DD and year 11 DS who have both had their worlds turned upside down. However, as a teacher with my own kids at the same school, I do feel that the school has kept the safety of both the staff and students at the forefront of their planning. This is a very difficult time, and I have seen first hand the anxiety and fear of those children of keyworkers (and the keyworkers themselves) who do have to come to school for childcare every day because they have no other choice.

Perhaps a mass writing to our MPs would have an impact, although I fear not. Adapting to distance teaching has not been easy, and has been made harder for everyone by the vast differences in technology resources in individual households.

I certainly fear for my DD next year who will be auditioning for post 16 vocational schools as we have no idea of the future landscape of teaching and learning in either mainstream schools or vocational and specialist colleges.

So, I guess I wanted to chip in with my two pennies to say, be kind to the teachers. We are doing our very best within the constraints of rules imposed by individual head teachers, the science and the government :)

  10. Not just vocational students of course! DD has had the dining room to herself for the last 5 weeks since her academic and dance schools closed. As it's dragging on so long, the carpet is now coming up in the bedroom to allow full use of her barre and allow us use of a dining table again!

Does anyone know of any good jazz or contemporary classes that are streaming at the moment? I am getting some really good ballet classes at the moment but I miss other genres :(

both on insta: Adam Scott and Graeme Pickering have both piqued DD's enthusiasm. Also Hannah Martin of BBC Greatest Dancer choreographs and teaches beautiful routines.

    Hi LottyLou,

It's possible to download the videos from the RAD app, which is what I have been doing the past few weeks. It's tied to a single account, but will work on multiple screens tied to that account.

    Perhaps that helps?

@ponklemum see info above in case you haven't found the DVD yet x

  13. We were in this situation a few years ago and DD's original teacher positively encouraged her to train elsewhere in a different method (she now does Cecchetti and RAD). We haven't stopped classes with her original teacher and still feel incredibly loyal- teacher supports DD's plans to train post 16 and feels that experiencing different methods and teachers is hugely important.
