  1. Hello. I know two people who got a no from elmhurst young dancers and a yes to royal ballet associates so you never know! Also we got a no in year 3 for JAs, but got in in year 6 off the swl and then offered mids for year 7....so just because its a no it doesn't mean it will always be a no. My dd was upset but it made her more determined to try again. Xxx

I see on here that quite a few people have handed back their spaces quite some time ago but haven’t heard of anyone being offered a space from the waitlist yet. Maybe this is all going on in the background and just so happens that nobody on this forum has shared the news. I’m thinking I will give it one more week then book something else. I thought there was more chance of a space on this programme than RBS and the waitlist email had a more positive tone than others - but maybe they just word things nicely!

I think the deadline was April 10th/11th perhaps so only a few days ago.... And they offered my dd a switch of weeks so I wonder if it takes a little while to switch things round and work out what they have to offer in each week? Good luck xxx

This is where our government really needs to step in & remove the job of  ballet dancer  from the list of employment roles that are unable to be filled & thus ok to easily hire overseas dancers. I am not against overseas talent but feel that should be used in the capacity of guest artists in principal roles - this giving opportunity to enjoy very many overseas dancers. But I do strongly believe that all UK based ballet companies should employ only UK dancers & professionals in at least the bulk of their positions.

It seems ludicrous that the government spends millions funding the training of UK dancers through MDS & DaDa awards as well as supporting ballet schools through other arts & education funding & charity status to then not try & protect in some way the company vacancies for these home trained dancers.

    Very well said! 👏

  4. There is usually a fair bit of movement as Elmhurst/Hammond and White Lodge students aren't allowed to do mids training...so they will hand mds back. We had to do that a few years back. Also I've heard the swl is actually quite short...so fingers crossed!

Congratulations to everyone who got a place and waitlisted!

My daughter who's a JA (first year of doing it, got in first time totally un-prepped, both her and I were clueless about the process) unfortunately didn't get a place nor got waitlisted for the Summer Intensive. I applied for the non-residential week.

Any advice on how to improve things for next year's application if we apply please?

Admittedly the photos weren't great, but I'm worried that perhaps she's not doing well in class (she's shy).

Hi Powder Pink. I've heard that the intensive photos aren't linked to JAs etc and so I wouldn't read into it too much (or think she didn't get in because she isn't doing well in class). Some great advice already from Ruby Foo 👏. We've never done professional photos so i wouldnt worry about that....but the poses aren't easy to do....my dd can do them now she is in year 9 but back in year 6 she struggled. Perhaps your teacher could help with them for next time? The arabesque is a tricky one for younger dancers! X

  6. I had no idea how big Richmond Park was! I thought it was just a normal park....like our local park 🤪!! It's huge! Nearly missed dd audition as was planning to park and 'wander up'...  then a friend pointed out how far it was!

So if you get in they don’t even offer you boarding? I assumed if you were far away that bit would be automatic.

Has your son/daughter gone to The Hammond?

They offer boarding to some and mds to some, but gave us an offer for a day place so didn't accept obviously! My daughter ended up going somewhere closer to home, she did love hammond though at auditions, seemed like a lovely school x

  8. My dd really worked at her flexibility. When she applied to JAs year 5 she only had her right splits. By the time we got to the school auditions a year later, she managed to get all her splits...she worked really hard on her flexibility, stretching most days. So even if splits aren't there yet, i wouldn't worry too much. We find that flexibility reduces when she has growth spurts too so it's always a work in progress!

  9. We got a day place at Tring (which was basically a no as we live miles away!) But them got mds for Hammond...so there is definitely a chance. All the schools look for different things and Tring is stricter than the others in some ways as they have less mds places x

  10. Good luck to your Dd! Please don't sorry about the song for Hammond! My dd is also not a singer and got mds offer....its more about having the confidence to have a go! Mds is based on their potential for classical ballet so they won't be ruled out on their singing ability.

I'd just ask any questions you're interested in knowing. E.g. what dance styles will they do? What do they do on weekends? Are there performance opportunities etc!

Like Ruby says it's all about enjoying the day and using it as an opportunity for a fun day of dancing in lovely studios! My dd loved audition week and we met some lovely mums who we are still in touch with now x
