  1. Tell her not to worry about splits as there are many other things they'll be looking for. My DD was an associate for 3 years and still couldn't get full box splits when she left. She left of her own accord, I should add, when she decided the classical route was not for her. The training was excellent.
  2. I was going to be charged £70 last year for a private GP appointment to produce a letter. This was before any funding offer, so I just asked the college (NBS) if they could wait for the medical form until after funding decisions had been made. They were fine with that. The college DD eventually chose required no GP letter.
  3. The official DADA paperwork can't be sent out until then, but in our experience this doesn't stop some colleges offering funded places before that date. My DD had two funded offers before the official date last year, including one made on the day of the audition. She had both in writing. Other colleges seem to hold to the official date or wait even later, after all the auditions have been completed. So a lot depends on where you're auditioning.
  4. You can't be creative. It's a Governmant fund with a significant amount of paperwork 😅
  5. Thanks everyone for your replies 😊
  6. My DD is training at college and has asked for a massage gun to help with her tight muscles in shoulders and quads especially. I've done a bit of research and there doesn't seem to be much evidence that they're effective. Has anybody got any experience with them? Are they worthwhile? I don't want to buy her something that'll end up sat in a corner. I wonder if a regular sports massage might be more effective?
  7. I've learned a lot from your contributions over the years balletbean - thank you for sharing!
  8. In case it's useful, The Hammond's advice for diploma students is to register with a local GP but keep your home dentist. I'm sure the dentist issues are the same all around the UK at the moment.
  9. Do you do other forms of dance as well as ballet? My DD auditioned this year for mixed genre dance diplomas (and one MT diploma) but she definitely wanted a college with a high standard of ballet. Her top two choices were Northern Ballet School and The Hammond. I've heard that London Studio Centre also has a good classical element. You could have a look at those maybe in addition to the pure classical schools?
  10. I think my DD said this is just stretching and mobility exercises done as part of one of the audition classes. No special 1:1 appointments.
  11. Hi, my DD has accepted a diploma place at Hammond. All I can add to what you already know is yes, the transport includes diploma students. We were told on her audition day that senior students have a separate floor in one of the boarding houses, and I got the impression that it's largely first year students who use it. My DD is hoping to move into a shared house for year 2/3 ideally. I believe the dancewear is pretty much plain black leotard. I read that in the Diploma Handbook we were sent when she first accepted her place.
  12. I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but when my DD was an associate at Northern Ballet a couple of years ago one of the pastoral team was Jem Clancy, an autistic dancer herself. I wonder if it's worth trying to get in touch with her to see if she has any recommendations for getting your daughter's needs properly supported in an associates programme? This is the most recent thing I could find: https://shapingourlives.org.uk/2023/02/14/featured-artist-jem-clancy/ If nothing else, it might interest your DD to see somebody else autistic pursuing art and dance as a career.
  13. Hi, you can find out everything about DADA awards on this site: https://www.gov.uk/dance-drama-awards Not everyone is offered funding. They are allocated on talent and the awards are means tested. There is an income scale where can see what your parental contribution is likely to be if your DC is offered an award, and whether or not you qualify for a maintenance award. What happens next is lots of paperwork (!) and submitting evidence of household income. I can't help with bursaries or scholarships, sorry, but maybe somebody else can. I have read that they are less generous than DADA funding but it must vary from college to college.
  14. DADAs are awarded in order of the "talent list" each college puts together. They are means tested but when the college's pot runs out, that's it. Anybody still on the list would have to self-fund. The Hammond has just started sending out paperwork for provisional DADA awards. Some people will decline theirs to take a place elsewhere, so more awards will be made as the weeks go on. Boarding at the Hammond is available for 16+ and we were told most first year diploma students use it. Hope that helps!
  15. I believe the last audition was Friday 3rd March but we've heard nothing yet. Miss Gray said she would get the offers out as soon as she could after 3rd.
  16. Is this for the lower school or for the diploma? The systems seem to be different.
  17. It's already possible to do a top-up BA year at The Hammond. I think this course is probably aimed at people who want a degree which is less about becoming a professional performer, but still like the idea of high quality teaching. More comparable to the degree courses at De Montfort etc.
  18. I read that as being a separate BA in Dance at Chester University with some teaching by Hammond staff. Hammond currently offers a BA in musical theatre but not dance. Willing to be corrected on this though.
  19. This came up for us at the Laine audition where most first years are 18 these days. The students themselves said most socialising happens in homes but of course there are some times when the 16-17 year olds can't go out with the older students. My DD decided that going to a college where there's a higher proportion of 16 year olds might be preferable.
  20. Not all the halls accept 16 year olds, if that's a consideration. Just to add to the short supply issues!
  21. Definitely take pointe shoes! My DD found the ballet choreo faster and less straightforward than other auditions she's done and really enjoyed the jazz. She said most dancers in her group were doing lyrical or contemporary solos (she did old school jazz). The talk was very useful and I'd advise you to ask all your questions as there definitely isn't much information online. The interview at her audition was just with the deputy principal, Miss Gray, and included questions about how she saw her future in dance. Hope that helps and good luck to your DD!
  22. Good luck! SLP has a relaxed vibe so it's a great first audition to have.
  23. My DD is 16 and auditioning this year. So far she's been to The Hammond and Northern Ballet School. Coming up in February are SLP and Laine. Laine is the only one 'down south' we are considering. All our heads are spinning with information, and the admin - oh my!! I am definitely DD's PA. She likes to call me her Manager, but it's much less glamorous than that 😂
  24. DD is lucky enough to have been offered Diploma places at both The Hammond and NBS (with 2 auditions still to come but I think these 2 are her favourite). She is finding it incredibly difficult to make a decision. One thing I'm looking at as a parent is the faculty. There is plenty of information on The Hammond's website but I can find out almost nothing about NBS. I got the impression at the audition that there is 1 main ballet teacher and 1 main jazz teacher. Can anybody provide any more information? Please feel free to PM if you'd prefer. Any other insights would be very welcome too! Thanks very much. I may be back with more questions later 😂
  25. Laine and SLP are the ones she's doing with singing solos. I'm pretty sure neither have mentioned clothing but now we'll be giving it some thought thank you 👍
