  1. Hello @JennyTaylor I’m also a relative opera newbie and found your post very interesting. I’ve seen 9 or 10 operas over the past two years and found that listening to the music a lot beforehand made a difference for me. I agree with those posters who recommended the ROH production of Turandot - it’s excellent and I found the choral singing thrilling. My 22 year old daughter, who doesn’t really have any interest in opera, came with me to see it and really enjoyed herself. I’d also agree with the comments re Mozart operas. The Marriage of Figaro last year at ROH was gorgeous; I’ve booked to see Cosi Fan Tutte this summer.

March 29th is Good Friday so the ‘Tchaikovsky gala’ is at the start of a long weekend. No work the day after for many so a trip to Birmingham a possibility depending on Bank Holiday (yay!) trains

Avanti are not running any Birmingham to London trains over the Easter weekend. Chiltern are running a Saturday service with longer trains than usual on Good Friday.

  3. I’ve booked for the first time as a Friend (well, since 1994) - I decided to treat myself and see how it goes. I was all fingers and thumbs (using my phone) and kept changing my mind, but amongst other things I booked for the Sissens/Sasaki Swan Lake, for which I’m very excited. Apart from my lack of dexterity it was pretty straightforward.

  4. Just to add to my brief post from last night: Osipova blew me away. I expected greatness from her and she definitely didn’t disappoint: she lived and breathed Manon. I felt the tragedy almost as soon as she arrived on stage. Clarke was a wonderful, soulful Des Grieux; honourable and ardent. Their first pas de deux brought me to tears for its beauty and the poignancy of the music. Campbell was an utterly superb Lescaut - just mesmerising in his loathsomeness- I couldn’t look away! The whole cast gave it everything- a really wonderful performance- I went home very happy indeed and feeling very fortunate to have been there.
