  1. Andrew pulls together a range of professionals including great technicians, performers and choreographers so everyone should get something out of participating. I would agree that if you want something more technical then this may not be the right option. For dancers who spend the term working on technique and preparing for examinations it is nice to have something different for holiday courses. We haven't found many that are so focused on technique for the whole of the course, even the big names.
  2. We were told they send the confirmation (RBS) of attendance with times around second week in December starting with the first audition group. Hope this is helpful. I assume it will come through the new application portal.
  3. DD has suggested reducing turnout until able to control her feet and move back out gradually. She agrees with Dancing unicorn that regular use of a theraband (used correctly foot aligned) would help strengthen and also suggests an exercise in lifting arches. DD's teacher doesn't like wobble boards for young dancers as without the strength to control it she could do more harm than correct. All that said ask her teachers what they suggest.
  4. When I asked DD what she used it for she said "this and that" and then suggested I could also use it for sitting on to watch TV so looks like we might need to get two - one for her and one for me!
  5. If you request an audition pack for the venue/ballet you are interested in they will send all of the details including rehearsal and performance dates.
  6. Can anyone recommend a good make for a swiss ball? We are on our second. The first lasted well enough so when we replaced we looked for the same make but couldn't find it so went for what we thought would be a good product. It doesn't seem to be big enough - it should be 65cm - and goes down quite quickly so I am fed up with it. DD now doesn't use it - I think she might have lost a plastic part needed to pump it up and doesn't want to ask me and get into trouble for loosing it! Any recommendations? I would love just to get her a new one. How much does the size matter? As I said I thought 65cm would be fine but this seems smaller but am not sure we can pump it up anymore to see. Thanks.
  7. Last year the cast was much smaller so hope you get good news this year. LCB is a great experience. We know of one dancer who auditioned every year and never gave up and on her last chance was cast in a lead role.
  8. In a life pre-DD I used to read the FT at work and his name rang a bell - I particularly remembered him for his comments on the Sugar Plum Fairy having taken the role to heart and eaten too many sweets which I thought particularly cruel.
  9. If it is the same man he taught dance history at Laban before becoming the drama critic to the Financial Times in the late 90s up until about ten years ago when I believe he moved to the US to take up a post as dance critic. He has also authored books on ballet from what I recall. He created controversy a few years back when commenting on the weight of a certain Sugar Plum Fairy.
  10. Try Point A at Paddington. We stayed there when it was under another name and it was good value. It is on Central and District line so easy enough for Victoria and ENB. There is also an Easy Hotel in the area that is basic and cheap - met someone who stayed there and said price outweighed the orange and lack of window! - and they may well have one close to Victoria.
  11. Can anyone advise me on which of the two options would be best Song of the Earth / La Sylphide or Le Jeune Homme et la Mort / La Sylphide? I go for the music and my friend goes for the ballet so we are struggling to decide as neither or us are very knowledgeable on ballet. Sorry to be so vague - just hoping someone can say something to help us decide. Thanks.
  12. DD uses microporous tape for that particular problem - very effective
  13. Hope all went well with the audition. This is bit late to respond and for anyone applying but I have only now come across this post again. I remembering thing that the problem is a metric/imperial issue: 142cm is around 4.6 feet although that isn't the correct way for this to be presented as you don't present imperial measurements in metric so yes this was 4'8" which I take it was the maximum height they were looking at, not 4' 6" - I hope no-one was put of by this. Either way my daughter was too tall - pity it looked like a good experience for the £20 fee.
  14. Thank you responding. Not sure if this is a silly question but I take it that you can choose to watch this in English. My French is pretty ropey!
  15. I think they may have heard you - the camera is at least moving to the side.
  16. I was surprised to hear Kevin O'Hare say that the majority of the company had come through either White Lodge or Upper School at some point. Maybe it is the "some point" that are the key words as I thought that few ever went through from WL to US and onto the company. Maybe they have been there for year or two and trained elsewhere before coming back.
  17. Here is the link to the BFI site in case anyone wants to get to get tickets. https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/lff/Online/default.asp?doWork::WScontent::loadArticle=Load&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::article_id=FCC0445D-40C6-4BC6-888F-2B3169A24A64&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=E0558F11-9B39-4BD6-A7A9-A2147B07372B
  18. With the average nine year old girl in the UK at 4'6", yes I would agree with height. We know a few little dancers so will send this there way.
  19. Must show DD as she wouldn't even run to school the other day in case she built up the muscle in her legs, as she couldn't stretch when she got there!
  20. Last year DD had one leg longer than the other during a growth spurt which threw her hips out of alignment and this year has problems with arms which has thrown her shoulders out. Thankfully she has not been too concerned but we have seen some rather odd positioning. I definitely agree that working on core strength has helped and this last year we steered her towards classes that allowed her to develop this and also given her some private lessons. She was able to tell the teacher what she wanted to work on and this has helped her confidence and given her lots to work on over the summer. I am not sure how long this will go on but I think the key is supporting them and moving the breakables!
  21. Last year we asked if DD could go to the alternative prelim date for the one for her age group and were told no. If there is no flexibility at that stage I would doubt they would at finals but worth asking I would think.
  22. DD loved it! Having missed the auditions last year she would love to try this time round. Does anyone know when they rehearse? Audition dates and show dates are all that I could see on the web site.
  23. Does everyone have to audition as well as putting in the video application or is auditioning just an option if you want a scholarship? Is the scholarship based on finding need or dancing ability? Looks an amazing course!
  24. I always assumed that was the case but I understand it is a more general security thing and there are quite a lot of sites that can't be accessed. Sorry for those who made a needless journey today!
