  1. My DC wasn’t flexible at that age and has worked on it safely and slowly over the years and is now more flexible and stronger than her peers who were more flexible when younger.  Flexibility is only one element of what a dancer needs and something like Pilates or PBT and strength training would perhaps be more beneficial in the long run.  My DC had three vocational school offers for Year 7 without being fully in all three splits. Advice from teachers is best as they will know what she needs.

So sorry, I'm afraid I've only just seen this, I was indeed at the the theatre.  Apologies I wasnt able to help, I'm not sure why they couldnt book tickets.

Thank you - the problem appeared to be the UCL web site - I contacted YDA who were unfortunately unable to help.  It’s a pity they missed it.  Hope it went well.

If anyone is considering YDA for their dc, and is able to get to London next week; YDA is taking part in a gala performance on 26th March (next Sunday) at Bloomsbury theatre. It is a fundraising gala put together by Du Boisson Dance Foundation, with dancers from RB, ENB and Scottish Ballet performing alongside students from YDA and West London School of Dance. Tickets are only £25.

Its a lovely opportunity to see how the students progress through the school as all year groups are involved. Link for tickets and more info below.

I recommended this to a friend but they can’t seem to get tickets - looks like the UCL site is down.  Do you know if it’s sold out?  I didn’t want to suggest they travel into London to try the box office to find there are no tickets.  Too late for this afternoon but if they leave now they can make 5.30pm.  Not sure you can help.  I am assuming you may have a DC taking part and at the theatre to enquire. Thank you. 🙏🏻

  4. Thank you - this is what we thought but the comment definitely said they didn’t have any MDS to give out.  My friend thinks it said “one year” but wasn’t sure if it meant this year or a previous year.  As DC knows of MDS being offered to friends in each of the last seven years I was concerned it meant this year.  On checking back posts in other threads this comment may refer to the DaDA but the few years this impacted the school apparently used bursary funds to bridge this until they had DaDA restored.

  5. I was going to ask this question on the closed RBS thread and now can’t recall who posted it.  Someone noted that Tring don’t have MDS available this year or did I get this wrong?  A few years ago they lost DaDAs due to missing the reapplication deadline (or something like that) but they offered them again for a number of years.  They rarely offer MDS to 6th Form but I thought they always had a limited number for lower years.  We have a friend whose DC is auditioning (today I think) and they wouldn’t have gone if they knew there was no possibility of funding.

Interesting... I saw an Australian ballet school congratulate a student for getting through to the RBS Semi-Finals for Upper School entry in 2023.

What surprised me was that the ballet school stated that there had been 1400 applicants!

This number is probably the total of all videos + upcoming in-person auditions registered both intl. and in the UK.

    A lot!

Note: PdL received 429 video applicants this year.  76 candidates selected.

The student would have done a video application as part of the International Audition process.

The other option for intl. applicants is to do a Preliminary Audition through in-person auditions at various locations around the world.  These are finished before Xmas

After that, is the Semi-Finals where they send in a video submission.

Maybe those who have already sent a video just have this re-looked at in the Semi-Final round.

The 1,400 RBS applicants will be for Lower School WL and Upper School - all years.  This is around the usual number of applications.

  7. Canvas flats will wash - just take care with drying - I insert an old tea towel to get them into shape and dry naturally. I once put them on the washing line and they shrunk as it was a sunny day. 😭

Sorry I can't help with that as my DD is in a younger group.

Can I ask if anyone knows anything about the junior group and what it entails? How much dancing do they actually get to do etc? Are the juniors just on stage for a few mins realistically?

It looks like fun and I'm sure DD would enjoy it but it's a long way from us and would involve quite a lot of expense going down for the performances on top of the actual residential costs so I want to have a think about whether it's worth it or not.

DD did the initial zoom audition without us knowing much about it so I'd like to find out a bit more before committing to going to London for the final audition.

Junior group used to do one dance but there is lots of teaching with a class each day.  They may have made changes to the format.  I am feeling in the dark with regards the new format as I am sure other are, unless I have missed something.  I am assuming that there are changes as I understood they started looking at this in 2019.

I don’t know the answers either but my daughter has been asked back to the Tookey audition group!?

Congratulations, our recall is for McOnie.

Which audition group was your daughter in for the 1st round?  I think it was roughly Group 1 Juniors and Group 2 Years 7 to 10 and Group 3 Years 11 and above

    This was for Group 3.

Can anyone recommend leotard brands which are flattering for a developing dancer, who is feeling self conscious about her bottom half, for those moments when she can’t wear a skirt. She’s slim but has more hip than the traditional ballet shape, so something that minimises that. I’m looking for brands with more coverage on the bottom, but not so low on the leg as to be really unflattering. Can anyone recommend either styles or brands? Nothing super expensive as she’s still growing, and probably in a small (dress size 8).

Have you looked at the RAD uniform ones?  They have some lovely colours and are flattering but have adequate cover.

Apologies if I’m repeating a question but I can’t see it - does anyone know if WL places are ever offered off the back of the SI? I couldn’t work out why else they’d ask on the form if you were interested but it surprised me. Thanks

If the like someone they will ask to see them regardless of whether or not you tick the box.  We know someone who was asked after the course if they wished to be considered and was offered an audition but decided against it.

  12. Getting back to the results from Central.  They are still taking applications so I would expect a large number of wait list places while they continue to review applications.

Does anyone know if the youngest age group for the SI tends to weight mostly UK students? My DS10 applied for week 3 but at that age I wonder if they prefer local candidates versus international.

Can’t recall if DC was in the youngest group the first time they went but  think it was Year 6 and there was a large proportion of overseas dancers.
