  1.  Central School of Ballet are starting a new Junior Associate Programme for children in years 4-6, might be worth looking at this maybe, their main Associate Programme is for 11yrs+, audition is usually May/June time  I think

  2. Equally we have friends at CSB associates who have loved their time there and are moving onto the full time course. I suspect you will find plenty of support for both so in the end it’s personal choice.

I agree I wouldn’t view it as a way to get into the associated vocational school, just as a supplement to existing training. One thing that appeals to me with ENBS now is that it includes some contemporary, something my daughter hasn’t done before, and which I feel will be beneficial. Does anyone know how long ENB associates has been running? I actually thought it was new, but can see that’s not the case.

    Central also offers Contemporary weekly

  4. No experience of ENBS as it’s relatively new, however can’t speak highly enough about Central Associates. As previously said, it’s a whole days training plus extra’s at no additional cost. Really can’t fault it! Does anyone know how many ENBS took full time from this year’s Associates?

Thank you @BolshoiAre applications still open? Don’t suppose you know if it’s done by year group or ability?

Yes I think applications are still open and I believe it is a mix of age and ability. Definitely a student centred programme!

  6. It is an excellent programme, 2 hours Ballet plus Contemporary and Pilates, plus older students also have a repertoire/ pas de deux class. There are also extras like the induction day at the beginning of the year and a creative day, no extra charge for these! Would highly recommend.

    Hello everyone!

I know this is a massive long-shot, but is there anyone attending the Junior week of Sander Blommaert’s Summer School who might be able to host a 12 year-old (Year 7)?

I’d love for my pupil to be able to do this Summer School as I know that the quality of teaching will be excellent and that lots of individual corrections will be given, but it’s tricky as it’s non-residential and of course, she’s far too young to stay up in London and commute alone.

Alternatively, does anyone know of other ballet Summer Schools where the class sizes aren’t enormous, where the teaching is excellent and where there is plenty of dancing each day?

She will apply for RBS but is obviously unlikely to be offered a place. She has been put on the Waiting List the last two years.

Moorland was excellent but it’s just so far away for us!

She will probably do Elmhurst’s as she is a full-time student there, but I would like her to experience something else too.

    Off piste suggestions particularly welcome!

    Thank you!

Central also run an excellent Summer Course but again not residential

My DD very much wants a career in ballet. When she was going through the auditions for upper schools, Rambert had a preliminary audition that included ballet and contemporary videos. I was quite surprised at how simple the ballet elements (simple barre exercises) of the audition were in comparison to the contemporary. In the end, she decided not to go through with it - because she wanted to prioritise other auditions.

But I suspect that from a ballet perspective, Rambert will work with what they have. If they like you, they like you.

The ballet at Rambert is very strong and not typical of a Contemporary school, just because the audition video was simple does not mean it is not considered. The timetable is 50/50 ballet and contemporary, unique in this country. All prelim auditions tend not to be too difficult, it isn’t an indication of the standard schools are looking for.

We handed back our DDs mids place once we had firmly decided on Elmhurst. I see the associates as opportunities for those students who either didn't get into vocational school, or don't want to move away from home at a young age. Doing both makes no sense to me?

Absolutely, it’s counter productive actually and most vocational schools don’t allow students to attend other weekly classes.

No vested interest but I do really feel for all the Central Associates who were at classes all day on Saturday and did/could not receive phone calls, only to find out later that other Finalists had heard. Even though they may well get good news tomorrow it's a shame the news couldn't have gone out at the same time.

How do you know they didn’t?

thank you for your reply anna, it does look an incredible school ! i was just put off by how none of the short courses were open to anyone over the age of 16, which confused me as the offer a degree course. its ok though, im extremely happy with the three schools i have chosen and with how expensive the audition process is, i think my mum is happy im not dragging her down to london again !

The short courses at Central are predominantly for under 16’s as most that audition for the Degree Course are in Year 11, therefore they start the Degree aged 16. I have known older students go to their Summer Course, always worth asking schools rather than assuming!

DD almost 12 has been dancing since around 6.

Just ballet and tap initially then over the years giving up different activities and gave up another at Christmas to focus more on dance.

Now she takes several different styles, some styles taking two classes (ballet)

She's quite passionate and she says she would like to do something related to dance for a job.

Only being year 7, I assume she doesn't need to think about what that something is just yet (Y9 maybe?)? However I wonder if she will struggle over the next few years because she doesn't do the same amount of training as her good dance friend and therefore her friend will excel and DD will be lacking skills/technique.

Unfortunately, I can't afford everything her friend does. She does all the classes that DD does (plus a few others at the studio they attend) plus a ballet associate on a Saturday and two other associates on Sundays. Her friend also attends lots of workshops, I send DD when I can afford it and get her there. Her friend takes private lessons aswell.

DD does some stretch classes/conditioning at home but seems to struggle to fit it in every night like her friend because of homework and wanting time to relax/chat to friends whereas her friend is dance, dance, dance (she hardly chats to DD outside of classes anymore)

To study dance further do you need to be in classes every day of the week, attending a couple of associates and spending every spare minute doing something to help with dance?

If I can't afford more do I need to look at what classes she currently does and over the next few years? If she knows what something it is she wants to do with dance do I look at which classes will help the most, so far example dropping street for another ballet class?

Would it be worth me suggesting to DD about applying for a good ballet associate and if funds don't stretch dropping all classes apart from ballet, tap and modern but would this mean the gap would widen more because she would have varied dance styles then?

    Thanks in advance.

I would consider applying for an Associate Programme, most have bursaries available

Hi, I’m writing as my last hope to see if anyone has experienced being accepted into the final of a school (this occasion ENBS) and haven’t received an email back with an answer (even though refusals and acceptances have been given?)

If not, does anyone have any idea what to do? (I have emailed and the response is it has been under review but that has been for one month now)

If I understand correctly, you attended the final audition but haven’t received any outcome, ie not a yes, no or waiting list? I think at this stage that is totally unacceptable and I would go elsewhere!

Does anyone know what time Prep 1 classes are at central? Also are they every Saturday on term time?

     Thanks

The timetable is quite different at the moment, if you email I’m sure they’ll give you an idea of the timetable for September even if it’s not confirmed.
