  1. also to address an earlier comment, I would quite like to do an MA after at laban or the place if possible!
  2. thank you all, especially Anna I love that advice! In terms of student finance, i believe everyone's entitled to 4 years of funding so if you don't like your first year somewhere you can transfer? i've also heard of lots of people who were unsuccessful auditioning for vocational schools, did a year at uni and reapplied and were successful after that? i obviously understand that it's only the second week and i will have more work to do and independent study and all of that, i'm just concerned i'm not getting enough technique or practical sessions as my ideal outcome at the end of 3 years would be to join a company and primarily be a dancer; as opposed to purely a choreographer or teacher etc. i think that a lot of the independent study is more research and less practical; i'm just concerned i'm not getting much actual dance training! i am looking to join a gym as i'm definitely not getting nearly as much exercise as i was before i came here! (not something i thought would be the case on a full time dance course) idk if this makes anything any clearer or gives any more information but thank you all again for any advice
  3. Hi all, long time no speak! I've just started studying Dance at De Montfort Uni in Leicester (after much struggle and debate discussed in previous posts from the last year) and I'm enjoying it so far (I literally only started on Monday). But although I'm in every day and have a practical class every day, most of my days finish at around 1pm, and then I don't know what to do with myself for the rest of it! I've been to dance society tasters this week however most of these are designed for people who aren't typically dancers and just want to keep it as a hobby; this also costs a certain amount to join and go to each class and is not lead by dance professionals but by current students. When I accepted my uni place my original plan was always to reapply for vocational after my first year, but obviously I'd need to start applying and thinking about auditions now or in the next couple of months, and I don't know if I can put myself through that again? It was such an emotional rollercoaster the first time around! Basically what I'm saying is, I'm considering reapplying for vocational training because I'm not convinced I'm going to get enough practical hours in here at uni, without going to find another dance school and paying for evening classes (something I am looking into). Any advice? Thanks!
  4. Hi all, just thought I'd let you know Rambert are holding youth dance company auditions on 5th September at their London South Bank studios, you can book onto it here: http://bpt.me/2598002 I'm going just for the experience, the studios are gorgeous! If the link doesn't work just google 'Rambert Quicksilver auditions'
  5. just to add, doing GCSE and A Level Dance didn't help me massively to even get my place to study dance at uni, like i'm fairly confident i could've got the place without it, and not many unis specify that you need to have done A Level, probably because so many schools don't offer it? though i'd say if you have the chance to and it's the industry you want to go into then its definitely worth it
  6. I've not read the whole thread so may be repeating what's already been said but just wanted to give my views on this as I've done GCSE Dance and currently doing A Level and I'm going to study Dance at university in September! I don't think A Level Dance is useful for a career in dance much at all although it does give you a form of training, as I had daily technique classes for quite some time during the course which has obviously improved my dancing and been a great addition to outside training as well. It's also a bit of an eye opener to a different side of dance as it's quite different from any other dancing I do outside of school in terms of choreography and understanding dance etc. GCSE Dance is the same, A Level progresses on quite nicely, I think it'd be quite difficult to do A Level having not done GCSE! However the jump academically is huge, A Level requires pretty good academic skills as the written exam contains 2 essays worth 40 marks each and is 50% of the overall grade, and the specification is changing so much that it's becoming more and more academic and less about actually being able to dance with good technique. On a teaching front I'd say it's pretty useful particularly if you want to teach in schools! I don't know if other schools do this but I was able to do a Dance Leadership qualification alongside GCSE and a Teachers for Tomorrow programme in Dance this year which has got me a bit of a head start in the teaching world. I hope this helps!
  7. hi all, just thought i'd mention that Hot House Dance in Hertfordshire are doing another summer intensive this year 8-12th August and already have an amazing line up as well including ZooNation, Matthew Bourne's Carman and Richard Alston company! For 5 days i think it's only £100 as well which is fantastic value if interested search for it on facebook or there is a website at www.hothousedance.co.uk
  8. Hot House Dance in Hitchin is running a one day course focussing on 'The Solo' if this is of any interest to anyone, search for it on Facebook or I'm sure it's on the website
  9. update for you all since quite a few people have got involved with this discussion - i really liked de montfort and got an offer which i have now accepted so should be going there!
  10. I should also mention that I'm away from 22-27 july, which seems to be when a lot of the courses are! also i live just north of london so can get into london easily but anywhere else further would need to have accomodation close by
  11. Hi, can anyone recommend any summer intensives for 18+ years? Residential or non residential, with a budget of around £200? My main focus is ballet and contemporary but I love trying other styles as well. Thanks in advance
  12. thank you all for your thoughts and advice! i have spoken to my current contemporary teacher who suggested i go to uni so that i get consistent regular training for a year and then reapply to vocational schools, and he said that this can be a very successful way of doing it. i do obviously understand that the degree courses aren't the same at unis compared to conservatoires, with the main difference being intensity of training (which is really the main difference that makes me want to be at a vocational school anyway) None of the auditions i've attended have offered any feedback at all which really isn't helpful! the cost of going to uni for a year is obviously not going to be cheap and something i need to think about carefully but its so hard to make a decision without really knowing what i'm going into, it could go either way in that i could equally end up loving uni and completing the 3 years there instead. i've got another audition at de montfort which is supposed to be pretty good in terms of training quality? so if i get an offer there that'll come into the mix, and after that i do have one more space on my ucas application though i'm not sure it's worth looking at more.
  13. ah ok, yes in RAD they're not in the grades at all (actually maybe grade 8 now I think about it) but other than that it's not until advanced foundation
  14. idealy performing in a company somewhere, possibly starting my own company? and after that becoming a dance teacher maybe even with my own school eventually. i'd also perhaps like to do some examining/judging as well, so i don't have a plan B in another field but am open to options in the dance world as long as i get to perform at some stage!!
  15. not sure if the link above works but this one should - https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/6HYJ2HN
  16. Hiya, some of you might remember I posted a survey about Capezio as a brand, in particular the undergarment range. I've now finished the project and come up with new concepts and have created this follow up survey to see what the target audience think of them. So I would be very grateful if you could all fill this out please!! (You don't have to have done the previous survey) thank you!! please comment below if you have any further questions :') https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/6GSR6XL
  17. omg, are they in grade 5 now?! i've only just learnt them in advanced oops
  18. at the moment i do 2 hours contemporary in a company, an hour of advanced ballet on tuesday, i've just started modern, tap and advanced jazz on wednesdays, an advanced ballet class and 2 hours contemporary technique/choreography on thursday, and another advanced ballet class and pointe on fridays. i also work in a leisure centre so have a free gym membership which also gives me free access to all the classes which would include pilates/yoga etc. i'm not really sure if this is enough to sustain me for a whole year considering i'm doing all that at the moment as well as a levels, thoughts?
  19. that's brilliant to know so i am definitely ok to do one year and then switch :')
  20. I actually have no idea how that would work with student finance i should probably find out!! the courses i've applied for at uni are all 3 year degree courses, not foundations. i'm at a few different dance places at the moment, my main school just focuses on exams and shows in modern, tap and ballet so a lot of people just go there as a hobby rather than to get into vocational schools, however there are some former students in very respectable places. the other places i'm at do also have a pretty good success rate in getting students into training of those who want to go down that path!
  21. my initial plan was to take a year out and do more training and work to get myself some savings etc but my current dance teacher has talked me out of that as it doesn't look good on applications to have a year out, it would look better to say I completed a first year at uni as that would still give me regular training even though it wouldn't be as full on as vocational (which is why I wasn't keen on uni in the first place) and Chichester is supposed to be very good, I have a friend there and she's loving it in her first year!
  22. basically a little while ago I bought Bloch 324 BLACK Kickline Shoes (from Amazon) and I'm sure I read somewhere that taps could be attached to them so they could be tap shoes as well as character shoes. however I've now started tap and would like to convert them into tap shoes if you like, so I've been searching and am now thinking that isn't possible at all.... anyone got any idea? if not, my next query is does anyone have any old size 4 tap shoes?:')
  23. I am hoping to perform in a company of some description though really as long as it's in the field of dance i think i'll be happy. i'd like to have my own dance school and go into teaching at some stage but first get myself some professional performance experience before teaching!
  24. i get this but i tried for vocational schools and was unsuccessful hence am probably going to end up at uni, still doing what i love just not as i'd originally hoped/planned. i'm also seriously thinking about reapplying for vocational schools in my first year of uni
  25. Hi!! I've got one more audition left at Arden School of theatre next week, but I didn't get into any of the vocational schools I applied for (London studio Centre, LCDS, NSCD and Laban) however I have got offers from Middlesex University as well as Edge Hill! I was just wondering if anyone had any experience in either of those places? Initially I was drawn more towards Middlesex however the audition day put me off a little, but I'm now heading back towards that one just because of the location, I've always wanted to train and live in London because I think there's so much more opportunity there and Edge Hill is so far away! Any advice on either of them or how to choose would be greatly appreciated :')
