  1. Thanks, but I don’t think it’s from jumping technique as I’ve been dancing for 15 years and never had an injury like this before. Last summer I started teaching aqua aerobics (basically jumping around on concrete poolside) and I think that’s the underlying cause and then going straight into full time training hasn’t allowed for recovery. We also don’t have sprung floors at college as it’s just converted office space. I haven’t seen a dance specialist but have paid out for sports massage, physio (private and nhs), osteopath and chiropractor
  2. Hiya just wondering if anyone has any experience of severe shin splints (Ive had it for about 6 months now) or compartment syndrome? I’m seeing a vascular surgeon on Monday which I think is for compartment syndrome investigation. Also if anyone has any tips for coping with injury because I literally can’t cope with sitting out of dance for more than one day at a time it drives me mad! I’ve been injured pretty much since the start of my college course which is super frustrating obviously and I’m soooo fed up but also concerned that the course is slipping away from me and I’m running out of time, especially if I need surgery. I’m 20 so I feel like I should be nearing the end of my training and starting my career but couldn’t be further from it.
  3. I would recommend dancia because they stock multiple brands rather than just going to freed or Bloch etc! But shop around
  4. Hi all, long time no speak! Thought I'd just let you all know that I'm now studying at Dancebox College who offer a diploma in dance alongside a Level 3 BTEC qualification which is equivalent to 3 A Levels. It is a fully funded course for those aged 16-18 and runs for two years as a sixth form alternative. We study ballet every day, jazz four times a week, contemporary twice, commercial twice, tap once and a theory lesson every day, as well as rehearsals for performances. The faculty is amazing with so much experience, and the facilities have just been updated into a much larger building which is going to be incredible when it's finished. There is an open day in a few weeks if anyone is interested, the college is located in Central Milton Keynes. More info: https://www.danceboxcollege.co.uk/ Any questions fire away! Fyi, I'm 19 and have already done a levels, so I had to pay for the course.
  5. i originally wasn't going to post everything on this thread but i seem to be getting quite a lot of traffic from here so i'll carry on unless people want me to stop haha:') in the meantime, glad you're all enjoying it

  9. ah yes i don't know why i didn't think of move it, i'm potentially volunteering there so will be able to find out through that!
  10. just posted a summary of my first term at uni which people might find interesting/useful! https://adancerblog.wordpress.com/2017/02/20/university-term-1/
  11. Hiya, just wondering if anyone knows of any alternative dance courses (contemporary, maybe with some ballet?) instead of vocational schools are university? I'm looking into the BalletBoyz dancer's course: http://www.balletboyz.com/dancers-course/1718-applications-are-open/ and wondered if anyone knew of any other options? Any apprenticeships? Thanks
  12. hey, does anyone/anyone's DDs have a fitbit? i just got one this week and it's really interesting to see the results from different classes etc. if anyone has one message me so we can be friends
  13. new post on malta dance company! https://adancerblog.wordpress.com/2017/02/15/review-zfinmalta-dance-ensemble/
  14. a girl on my course was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago but has now been told it's not as serious as they thought it was! so maybe don't worry yet if you've not had all the tests done etc? but even so your DD is young and still has her whole life ahead of her, education can be postponed for health! i hope she feels better soon
  15. I've done the aaudition/workshop process 3 times so any questions on that drop me a message! I've not got into the company myself but will still attend any workshops they do because theyre so much fun, and everybody is at really different levels and you dont have to be good at a particular style, its all very varied! I've had a few friends in the company who've loved it and can only speak positively about the experience and I saw their final piece last year which was amazing!
  16. Hi all! If you've got a spare minute could you check out my new facebook page and give it a like and share - particularly if you are in the Leicester area! https://www.facebook.com/ladancefit1/ There's no conditioning or fitness classes on my dance course at uni so since I got my Level 2 ETM qualification last year I'm putting it into practise by setting up my own conditioning class in the city centre. It's ideal for dancers but also great for anyone else who just wants to have some fun, get some exercise and increase their fitness. I hope this is something that will expand in the future. Thanks
  17. i've just added a new page to my blog https://adancerblog.wordpress.com/la-dancefit/
  18. another update i guess for the sake of it - i heard back from laban today and haven't got in so i'm either staying at uni or finding something else entirely i guess. thank you for all your support here
  19. thanks everyone, i've found this thread really interesting to read up on!! in terms of ballet being zumba-ised, have any of you heard of DDMIX? the dance exercise programme created by Darcey Bussell? i think that's probably as close as you can get to ballet zumba, they're very similar. my eventual plan is to become a professional dancer after completing my dance degree, then after that go into teaching properly when i have actual experience etc as some of you were talking about earlier. right now, i'm just looking to put on classes in the evenings or weekends to make myself some extra money. i have an exercise to music qualifcation so that's first port of call, however i thought with 15 years of dance training and studying it would be a possibility to put on a dance class as well. obviously i wouldn't be looking to train children for exams or competitions or anything like that, it would be purely recreational. but i do think i have enough basis of technique and good structured dance classes to set one up myself?
  20. zumba is actually completely separate to ETM, the good zumba instructors will probably have done ETM first yes, but it's not a requirement and the zumba training itself is just one day of learning moves and getting teaching tips at the end of which you get a certificate to say you can teach it, which anyone can attend. (i know this because my mum is a fitness instructor)
  21. oh and im looking to set up my own class through private hall hire at the moment. I'm looking to put on aerobics and conditioning like this, but have just thought about the possibility of a dance class
  22. thanks all! I've done up to grade 8 rad and advanced foundation. I do already have an exercise to music qualification also, and a DBS since I work with children. I've also taught at my old studio on a fairly regular basis, and done a dance leadership qualification. in terms of syllabus, I just wanted to see what the options were without needing to a particular exam board if that makes sense, I realise I'd probably get a lot further if I did train in one of the boards. this way, can anyone recommend which one? I only have experience of RAD and I'm not a fan of the new grades so puts me off.
