  1. That is very sad @Viv Not commenting on your scenarios but I wonder if we are getting too scared to discuss weight and diet? Not just with DC but with all kids in general... I know some vocational schools will not discuss weight with U16s or U18s. This puts a lot of pressure on parents who need support and advice on how to manage. Especially as they have less control over what their DC eat.
  2. @Mumofdancegirls I would be cautious about Mr Powney's views on competitions. Until very recently his school recruited heavily from international competitions. On more than one occasion he has missed US finals to go to PDL. I agree festivals are not the be all and end all but can be very positive and enjoyable. I would not judge them as 'the best thing since sliced bread' or 'absolutely awful'. I think @Mrs Brown has a balanced view and I imagine her girls benefit. Dancing, like life, is not black and white.
  3. I think there is a market for Y14 places or movement between schools - KS Dance seem to take students who have had injury issues at other US. They do have a dance scientist to help. I suppose the question is what can Elmhurst (or any other place) offer you that your current/past school hasn't been able to? I also, like Jane, have a fair degree of suspicion. There seems to be an expanding number of 'post grad' courses. Maybe we need to address the issue of training too many dancers....
  4. 5. Brand new Bloch black leather split sole jazz shoes. Bought for my DD to grow into but she never did! Style is very good fit on slim feet Size is indicated 4.5 and I think this is USA sizing. My DD is UK 2.5 and they're a bit big so around UK 3. I think they are style S0461L £10 plus postage at cost
  6. Brand new untouched. DD has changed shoe type. Cost £39.95. Would like £20 plus postage at cost please.
  7. Look up labrum/labral tear. This collar of cartilage around the hip is easily damaged and often requires surgery.....
  8. Crikey Aracuaria definitely best avoiding that teacher. Over splits are potentially very risky. It's one of the things I hate most on Instagram - tiny tots (often rhythmic gym I think) doing it. Horrendous....
  9. We will miss you Harwel. Your advice has been wise. Congratulations to your son on a fantastic new career. It must be such a positive end to what must have been a very stressful time.
  10. Hi - first of all try not to worry! I know this is easier said than done! There's lots of ups and downs, many of which you can't predict. It's best to take it day by day otherwise it's just overwhelming. Many children from ballet schools get into Laine etc at Y11 so don't worry about that. As regards the assessment processes at each school I think they vary and really only someone who has had a dc at the individual school can advise. I can comment by PM on Hammond but suspect that's not the school in question!! There were plenty of DC at Hammond with funding who had been assessed out of other schools if that helps. Good luck!!
  11. This is a guess but I suspect a higher proportion of dancers might be boarders?
  12. I don't know if it's formally available but you could take her home every Saturday lunchtime once dancing finished...
  13. Good point. I'm sure my kids think I should be more silent with my opinions 🤣🤣🤣🤣
  14. My understanding is that if you are awarded an MDS you can choose to use it either way. However, in Tring's case it does often seem to be short of boarding spaces so probably better to apply for boarding and then change to day at Tring in particular. Regarding whether to be day or not; it's an overall balance for any family - issues such as your job, siblings, costs, other responsibilities, child's preference allow to be taken into account. Personally i think 80 miles daily driving plus a job for you is a lot. You would need to do Saturdays as well. Weekly boarding may work? Other issues - these are essentially boarding schools and non boarders can feel a bit left out sometimes. I don't know proportion of day pupils at Tring. A lot of travel on daily basis is exhausting for child on top of dance and school schedule. A lot to think about.... But personally I wouldn't worry too much about it until you (hopefully) have offers and know what your options are. Tring usually has the fewest number of MDS available out of all the schools.
  15. You probably don't have anything to lose by trying the closer shop first. Unless she has a very unusual foot there is likely to be more than one shoe that works for her...
  16. I wouldn't automatically assume that all vocational Lower Schools in the UK are offering gold standard training for ballet. Some are more tuned to training general dancers .

    RAD Adv1

When DD was non vocational they were charged the standard fee plus a room charge (rent) if the exam was a different day to when the school usually rented the village hall.
  18. PS International Ballet - previously called OPES.
  19. Not everyone does tap and they are usually expecting this at summer schools so I wouldn't worry too much. Hope your DD enjoy it!
  20. There is a FB selling group which may be useful.... Ballet Tutus and dancewear for sale secondhand or new. It's a closed group you need to join. HTH
