Sander Blommaert's Christopher Wheeldon interview
Fiona replied to Fiona's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Well, the picture of Blommaert was excellent, but for Wheeldon not so good. The sound was fine. -
Sander Blommaert interviewed Christopher Wheeldon yesterday, Monday, on Instagram at 7pm, and he was asked about his new production for the RB. Apparently it was meant to be scheduled for this autumn in the new season, but is now postponed. I caught "Chocolate" in the title, and that it is set in Mexico, and is a known story, I believe? If anyone could enlighten me as to the proper title, I would be very grateful! By the way, it was an excellent interview, and very interesting!

I have just watched it again, and it is in Ryan's class at White Lodge where I think I spotted Matthew Ball behind him? I may be wrong! -

This film also shows a young Matthew Ball in the row behind the Clarke brother in class at White Lodge. -

Did Francesca Hayward not dance on Saturday evening? No-one has mentioned her! -
Well, I thought it was great! So exciting for Francesca Hayward to have a lead role, and she looks wonderful in it. I haven't seen the Twitter comments, but I couldn't care less about some people who maybe feel they must put everything down and deride it. Roll on December 20th when (I believe) "CATS" opens in the cinemas!

Royal Ballet Japan tour performances June 2019
Fiona replied to Naomi M's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I believe this is the exemplary Royal Ballet training showing on both dancers. They have both been right through White Lodge (for ages 11 to 15, I think), and then the Upper School. (Lauren Cuthbertson was a Junior Associate even, before White Lodge, and quite possible Matthew Ball too. -
Royal Ballet Insight and In Rehearsal discussion
Fiona replied to JohnS's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I enjoyed it tremendously. Please do continue on this excellent forum to give us a 'heads up' when these rehearsals take place. I am sure that there are a lot of us who otherwise would not know about them.- 345 replies

The Royal Ballet: Manon, London, March-May 2018
Fiona replied to zxDaveM's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I saw Manon originally in 2000, and the next time in 2014 at the cinema. I was amazed at how the Gaoler's actions were way, way more pronounced and displayed than originally in 2000. So that scene must have been changed from the top, to fit in with the 'current climate'? Maybe Lady MacMillan? I would think that she has the last word with any change or 'enhancement'?- 592 replies

Are 32 fouettés necessary?
Fiona replied to Jan McNulty's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I believe I read (from Ismene Brown?) that she felt that single pirouettes performed by Odile were more like a whip lash and therefore more in character than inserting doubles and triples. The music is also much more suitable to single pirouettes with the definite 'one two' beat and persistent rhythm. -

For those of you who saw and enjoyed the lovely Nutcracker programme on TV at Christmas about Francesca Hayward's Sugar Plum Fairy debut, Nadia Mullova-Barley who was chosen as a final year student from the RBS Upper School to perform as a Snowflake, Angel, etc. and was featured in the programme, is joining the RB with the Aud Jebsen group. I am so happy for her!- 89 replies

The Royal Ballet: Ashton Triple Bill, June 2017
Fiona replied to Sim's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Perhaps Sir Frederick Ashton stipulated that Titania HAS to be blonde? (Like the young boy in "Month in the Country"?) I would imagine that he wanted it this way. (Although I agree that many dancers are not enhanced by the wig at all.)- 315 replies

I am so glad they presented the programme about Darcey Bussell's career through the eyes of the BBC. (I just wished each excerpt had been longer!) I have a lot of the footage on Video Cassettes, however my poor video player broke down some time ago, so this programme is a very welcome replacement. So many memories of her beautiful dancing, and Winter Dreams and Song of the Earth certainly portrayed to me a vast amount of emotion, to name but two. In my eyes she deserves every amount of success that she has enjoyed.

I enjoyed the Darcey Bussell "Fonteyn" programme very much indeed. It is well produced and presented, and I am delighted that there are a few TV shows this Christmas about ballet on the mainstream channels. Long may it continue. Regarding Panama etc, I had hoped before that they would show footage of it, and the ending was very touching. Definitely worth watching, and Ms Bussell is doing a lot to bring ballet and dance to the general public, which should make ballet enthusiasts very glad!

Royal Ballet 2017 Spring Casting
Fiona replied to Bluebird's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Is anyone else surprised that Zenaida Yanowsky is not cast in Rubies in Jewels? Or has she said previously that she will not dance it any more? I am delighted that Heap, Hamilton and Storm-Jensen are cast in the role though. It's great to see them given a chance. -
The Royal Ballet, Manon, Autumn 2014
Fiona replied to annamk's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I have not seen the Russian lady or the Bolshoi broadcasts, but I did see the Manon broadcast last Sunday mattinee, and I enjoyed Darcey Bussell's presentation. Her two interviews with Lady MacMillan and Kevin O'Hare were extremely interesting, especially as Miss Bussell worked with MacMillan on various roles, including Manon, which was fascinating to hear about. In my book, that makes for a good Presenter, and I would wish for no other!- 311 replies

BBC Ballet on TV season - March 2014
Fiona replied to Nana Lily's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Am I correct in thinking that approximately 80% of TV and cinema viewers know nothing about ballet? If so, they surely do not want to be lectured on the technical and highly detailed nuances of the art form. Darcey Bussell is charming and so at ease in front of the camera, and the best know and loved British ballerina around. I agree with chrischris in finding Rojo slightly pretentious, and it was surely impolite not to introduce her partners in the Swan program, which other dancers would have done automatically?- 176 replies

From what I recall of the original announcement, Carlos Acosta will also be performing in Don Quixote as well as producing the show. Perhaps with Nunez as his Kitri? I am sure a hugely popular pair in ticket sales. Also Cojocaru recently performed Don Quixote for ABT in New York, and got rave reviews for her perfomance.- 110 replies

Celebration Gala 21 October Linbury
Fiona replied to capybara's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Thank you, capybara, for telling us about this Gala. It sounds fabulous, with such a diverse and varied programme. It really is great for those of us, also, who never get to London, to be able to read about these events. I wish there were photos of it!
