  1. In the recent article in the Times on Carmen, there was a detail that no one here seemed to have picked up on  .  "Acosta also plans to augment the Acosta Danza cast by bringing in a trio of dancers (Yaoqian Shang, Javier Rojas and Lachlan Monaghan) from BRB...to share the main roles"

The Acosta Danza Carmen performances at Sadler's Wells in July are very nearly sold out already, but thought some readers here might be interested.

  3. I saw UniVerse in the Linbury last year.  The visual effects are very impressive. It might be better to approach this as an art installation which has a modest amount of dancing involved.  I hope at Sadler's they can replicate the giant fish hologram (or projection)  which in the Linbury I could have sworn was floating above the stalls area.

  4. "This Season, Next Generation Festival features performances from BRNO National Theatre Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet 2, New English Ballet Theatre, The Royal Ballet School, CHANCE2DANCE (Chance to Dance Legacy Company, Chance to Dance Connect, The Royal Ballet School’s Primary Steps, National Youth Ballet and Joe Powell-Main), German National Youth Ballet (BundesJugendBallet), ZooNation Youth Company, Rambert School and English National Ballet School."

    Details here

    https://www.roh.org.uk/tickets-and-events/festival/the-next-generation-festival-2024-details

A couple of these companies are new to me - can anyone give us a bit more detail on BRNO and the German National Youth Ballet, for example ? And what sort of rep they might be bringing.

  5. More on this

"Birmingham’s cultural figures from Carlos Acosta and Joe Lycett to Duran Duran and Napalm Death have criticised the 100% cut made by the city council to its arts funding which they say will “devastate” the arts ecosystem in Britain’s second city.

The complete defunding of arts organisations, including Ikon Gallery, Birmingham Royal Ballet and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, was announced this week as the council plans £300m worth of cuts over the next two years."

  6. Birmingham City council is virtually bankrupt. Latest cuts to the arts are reported on the BBC as follows

"There will be a cut to all funding for culture projects and local arts development, including support for 10 local arts forums.

Support will initially be retained for Black History Month and Birmingham Heritage Week in 2024/25 but those events will face a 100% cut from 2025/26.

Birmingham International Dance Festival will lose its £350,000 funding

Grants to regularly-funded arts organisations will face 50% cuts this year and 100% next financial year.

    They include:

    City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

    Birmingham REP Theatre

    Birmingham Royal Ballet

    IKON Gallery

    Birmingham Opera Company

    FABRIC

    Sampad

    Ex Cathedra

    Legacy Centre of Excellence

    B:Music

Funding to attract tourism will also be cut by £25,000."

  7. The Ashton Foundation Masterclass on Sunday 18th February was excellent. Anthony Dowell coached Sae Maeda and Leo Dixon in the Thais pas de deux. This was one of the most enjoyable of these sessions that I've been to. Dowell was very engaged and keen to get the best out of the dancers. And full of anecdotes too. I hope this makes it to the web site soon.  There was some vintage film of Ashton coaching Sibley and Dowell from 1972 in a BBC programme. I hope that can be included.

Thanks so, Lynette.  I so LOVED Mark Bruce's wonderful Frankenstein when I last saw it - and were I not having a major operation at the time - which I so wish I wasn't - would love to see it again.  Will very much look forward to your reports here.

Bruce I suspect you might be thinking of Mark Bruce's Dracula, a production from a few years back with Jonathan Goddard. Frankenstein is a new show (also with Jonathan Goddard).

  10. Rambert have an extensive archive. You can find details here

    https://rambert.org.uk/explore/rambert-archive/

"The Rambert Archive holds significant collections documenting the evolution of British dance. It tells the story of the development of Britain’s oldest dance company as we moved from classical ballet, through embracing modern American and other influences, to become a 21st century contemporary dance company.

With over 500 costumes, 700 posters, thousands of images and objects, dance notation, music and footage, the collections held in the Rambert Archive demonstrate the company’s pioneering work in dance throughout the 20th century to present day collaborations."

    "Rambert Archive FAQs

Can I donate items to the Rambert Archive?

We welcome donations of archive material to the collections. We collect material that relates to the company, to our collaborators and heritage. Please view the collection development policy (download below) for more information. If you have material which you feel should be in the Archive, please email rambert.archive@rambert.org.uk with details of your collection or write to the Rambert Archive"

  11. Lots of things out there sound very tempting, especially the Ashton bills in June. There is a mad pile up of events in London in the last two weeks of March which includes a number of things that are of interest to me - Mark Bruce's Frankenstein with Jonathan Goddard, Phoenix Dance Co (Requiem), the Macmillan triple bill, Kidd Pivot, York Dance co.

Very much looking forward to ENB in the Skeaping Giselle soon.

What are you looking forward to ?

  14. This has just been announced. There are a couple of items I thought would be of interest to readers here.

Mark Bruce Dance is back.  His new work is a double bill including Frankenstein, featuring Jonathan Goddard as the monster.  26 - 28th March

    https://theplace.org.uk/events/spring-2024-mark-bruce-frankenstein

Phoenix Dance theatre are also on in March, with a triple bill that includes part of Dane Hurst's Requiem (recorded music though) and a new piece by Miguel Altunaga. 22 to 23 March.

  15. I see from one of the interviews given in the links (Bachtrack) that the company is planning to operate for half the year - April to September /October. That seems to be a sensible plan,  meaning they won't be in direct competition with other companies on their summer break. If thy have programmes to offer in July and August these would be very welcome, given that these months can be quite scant in terms of ballet performances.

  16. Some very substantial cuts to the arts in Birmingham came in 2016. I recall posting something about them here then, but I don't think it triggered the same kind of reaction.  Here's the news from 2016

    https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2016/dec/15/birmingham-arts-council-spending-cuts-symphony-orchestra

I suspect the funding has shrunk still further since then. So the latest news is indeed calamitous but its the end of a long drawn out process.

  17. Concerning the Festival of New Choreography, the blub said that there would be performances in the Linbury and Clore Studio as well as the four scheduled dates on the main stage. The main stage dates are there on the ROH web site but there's no trace on the web site so far of anything in the Linbury or Clore. Presumably the Linbury piece is the work by Robert Binet.

Booking is now open for some Friends so this seems a bit odd.

Just curious because the Clore and Linbury seem more congenial homes for some new work - the main stage is dauntingly vast for a choreographer at an early stage in their career.
