  1. CharlieChuck, I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles. I do hope Dexter will come through, it sounds like he is having the best possible treatment. GTL has given some wonderful, practical advice above. Sending you hugs and best wishes. Jx
  2. I was at the matinee on Thursday afternoon. It was my 9th and final performance watching this current run! I find it hard to believe that I have enjoyed this production so much this time around (I enjoy it but its not a favourite). I think David Bintley has found almost the perfect cast combinations. Maureya Lebowitz and Brandon Lawrence took the honours on Thursday afternoon. They were just out of this world and I was weeping buckets during the beautiful final duet. Max Maslen was superb as the Raven, his hands and arms are particularly beautiful. Laura Day was enchanting as the Wild Girl. Lewis Turner was a lovely cheeky hare in the ballroom scene. In fact all the dancers looked like they were having fun being naughty in the ballroom scene. I just wish I knew which dancers I was looking at! This ballet is also populated with character miniatures that David Bintley is so good at creating. The bailiffs henchmen are a case in point; Jonathan Caguoia is just hilarious! The scene with the wedding guests is also rib-ticklingly funny. Laura Purkiss and Rull Brill as Belle's vain and selfish sisters were pitch perfect. James Barton has perfect comic timing as M Cochon. A great afternoon made even more pleasurable by bumping into a couple of Forum members by chance!
  3. I was at the performance on Wednesday evening. What can I say, from the moment she first appeared I was watching Manon as opposed to Francesca Hayward dancing Manon. She was totally subsumed into the role and I loved watching her seduced by avarice. Hers was such an intelligent and nuanced reading of the role that it is hard to believe she is a young dancer at the start of her career. Edward Watson swept me away as DG. I loved his interactions with both Francesca and Alexander Campbell as a nasty and all too believable Lescaut. One of the joys of this performance was, to me, the fantastic way the three leads interacted. I thought that Bennet Gartside was a thoroughly nasty gaoler - a brilliant performance. I was emotionally drained by the time the curtain came down! It was lovely meeting up with fellow Forum members in the intervals too.
  4. Mathias Dingman of Birmingham Royal Ballet is guesting with ENB in the Nutcracker. He will be dancing four performances with Erina Takahashi. Here is the ENB announcement
  5. Hello FrankH and welcome to the Forum. Thanks for giving us such articulate thoughts about the performance. I do hope you will continue to post.
  6. The Chelmsford Ballet Company's 2015 programme In its 2015 programme The Chelmsford Ballet Company will present Pineapple Poll and an all-new work for the company, Christopher Marney's Carnival of the Animals. The programme will run from 18-21 March 2015 at the Civic Theatre in Chelmsford, Essex. Tickets will go on sale in late November, for which contact the box office on 01245 606505. Christopher Marney is the company's patron, having danced with the company and current Artistic Director Annette Potter in previous years. Christopher Marney is currently establishing himself as a much sought after choreographer; he has recently been studying for his Masters in Choreography from Central School of Ballet and is a longstanding member of Matthew Bourne's New Adventures. He is currently dancing the Prince on the international tour of Swan Lake. The company is excited to work closely with its highly valued patron. In this delightful double bill, full of humour and family fun, audiences will experience the Company's varied work in both genre and era. Pineapple Poll, a comedy ballet of sailors and their sweethearts, takes its form in Annette Potter’s adaptation. Pineapple Poll is full of fun, originally choreographed in 1951 by the celebrated John Cranko. Captain Belaye and the HMS Hot Cross Bun arrive in Portsmouth and the sailors, who are now on shore leave, head into town for the pretty girls and the local inn. Fun and games ensue as Poll and the girls, Jasper the pot-boy, sailors, Blanche, her Aunt and Captain Belaye plot to capture the attention of their hearts’ desire. Christopher Marney's Carnival of the Animals, a first for the company, is set in a 1930s theatre. A young stage hand falls for a dancer in the corps de ballet of a touring company: humour and romance ensue as he sets about joining the show to win her hand. This ingenious piece is accompanied by the beautiful music of Camille Saint Saëns, Poulenc and Strauss. For further information: www.thechelmsfordballetcompany.co.uk --Ends-- About The Chelmsford Ballet Company In 1947, Joan Weston created the Broomfield YMCA Ballet Company in order to give the more senior students at her existing dance school the opportunity to learn and perform to the public. It was after their 1949 performance of ‘Coppélia’ at the Shire Hall that the then Mayor of Chelmsford suggested the name ‘The Chelmsford Ballet Company’, and with a small committee the Company was born. Since 1949, the Ballet Company has staged a full-scale production every year. Initially a part of the Arts Festival, and then the Cathedral Fringe Festival, they occur today as an annual event in their own right. Today the Company is led by Artistic Director Annette Potter, who is a former dancing member. Annette danced many leading roles with the company before moving on to teaching and choreography. The Ballet Company is a way for skilled dancers from across the area to perform together and to showcase their considerable talents to appreciative and receptive audiences. Theatre-goers are constantly ‘thrilled’ with the productions, which always maintain the high standards set by Joan Weston. It has become a well-loved cornerstone of Chelmsford’s cultural calendar. The Chelmsford Ballet Company is “an amateur Company which sets professional standards for all its work, involving professionals in its productions, courses and other teaching and workshop opportunities”. The standards are such that both junior (aged 10 and Standard/Grade 2 or above) and senior (over 14) dancers must audition to become members and again each year to perform in any production. These high standards are maintained through the monthly Company classes, where the dancers are able to meet and take a class with experienced and distinguished teachers. In the 1960's a Scholarship Fund was created to help young dancers moving to professional training.
  7. Phoenix Dance Theatre’s 2014 London season: 25 – 29 November Linbury Studio Theatre, ROH, Covent Garden, London WC2 A trademark mixed bill from Phoenix dance including a Christopher Bruce world premiere. Under Artistic Director Sharon Watson, Phoenix Dance Theatre proudly presents its week-long, London 2014 season, featuring a double bill by Christopher Bruce CBE including Shadows, a brand new work created especially for Phoenix Dance Theatre and a restaging of Christopher’s energetic study of life in the 1940’s, Shift. Alongside the Christopher Bruce double-bill, Phoenix presents the London premieres of new work from Darshan Singh Bhuller and choreographic duo Ivgi & Greben. Having choreographed works for leading dance companies across the globe, this is the first time that Phoenix will perform any of this renowned choreographer’s Christopher Bruce’s work. Set in the mid-twentieth century Shadows is a moving and thoughtful piece of dance theatre, taking the family dynamic as its central theme, exploring some of the deepest fears and daily struggles faced by people all over the world. Bruce’s Shift, is an energetic study of factory workers in the 1940’s. Performed to the last movement ofSwing Shift by Kenji Bunch, the dance builds its choreography out of a vocabulary of production-line tasks. Speaking about Shadows, Christopher Bruce said “To me, many of Arvo Part’s compositions evoke images of a European history and tradition steeped in over a thousand years of human experience and, frequently, suffering. These themes, and particularly the turbulence of twentieth century events, have influenced my reaction to his work “Fratres”. In my dance the action can be read literally or metaphorically, within the intimacy of an insular family environment or on a more universal scale. I am happy to leave the audience to interpret the work individually.” Powerful, relentless and hard hitting, Document is the first UK work by exciting Amsterdam-based choreographic duo Ivgi & Greben. Set to music by long term collaborator Tom Parkinson this brooding new piece sees five dancers grappling with the darkest aspects of human emotion, building to fill the stage with blistering, intense movement. Inspired by his father’s journey from East to West, Mapping is former Phoenix Artistic Director Darshan Singh Bhuller’s first work for the company since 2006. One of the leading voices in British dance, this new work sees Bhuller looking down on the world from above, and is packed with his signature thrilling, dynamic and inventive choreography. Mapping 1, 2 & 3 were originally developed with Ballet Central and the full re-working of Mapping represents the final choreographic journey of this piece. Tues 25 – Sat 29 Nov at 7.45pm Linbury Studio Theatre, ROH, London WC2 Box Office: 020 7304 4000 Tickets: £8 - £25 www.phoenixdancetheatre.co.uk NOTES TO EDITORS: Sharon Watson – Phoenix Dance Theatre Artistic Director Sharon Watson was appointed as the 7th Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre in May 2009. 8. The performance of Manon tonight was utterly sublime. I'm emotionally drained!
  9. I finally caught up with the Mark Bruce Dance Company's production of Dracula in Manchester last Saturday. After reading so much about the production last year I had really high expectations and they were absolutely not disappointed!! I loved the wit and humour in this production and the fact that this in no way detracted from the disturbing nature of the plot. I loved the three "brides of Dracula" being used as a sort of chorus. I loved the set, especially the gothic gates that added so much to the spooky atmosphere. I loved the horses and the wolves. Most of all, I loved Jonathan Goddard as Dracula - his incredible stage presence was a brooding menace throughout the performance. I found it very easy to follow the progression of the story. Coincidentally, within the eclectic and atmospheric score Mark Bruce had chosen to use some of the same pieces of Schnittke that David Nixon has used in his production of Dracula. This is a seriously wonderful piece of dance drama and I hope you will all try and see it during this tour!
  10. Here's just a couple of existing threads for you to have a look at. I am sure other members will be able to chip in with their thoughts. There are lots more summer schools in the UK than the threads I have picked out below. The Prague master classes curated by Daria Klimentova seem very popular (but I couldn't find the thread) as does the one held at BTUK. http://www.balletcoforum.com/index.php?/topic/6990-yorkshire-assembly/?hl=%2Bsummer+%2Bschools#entry96900 http://www.balletcoforum.com/index.php?/topic/7172-opes-v-yorkshire-assembly/?hl=%2Bsummer+%2Bschools http://www.balletcoforum.com/index.php?/topic/6304-elmhurst-senior-summer-school-2014/?hl=%2Bsummer+%2Bschools#entry84555 http://www.balletcoforum.com/index.php?/topic/6810-summer-school-west-yorkshire/?hl=%2Bsummer+%2Bschools
  11. Thanks Lyn. It has always made sense to me that the swans are danced by men as, to me, they are such masculine birds. I had a "swan incident" in the early 1980s that coloured my view of them and I love the way the swan movements are so realistic in this piece.
  12. I was at the Saturday matinee in Nottingham, which was led by Javier Torres and Dreda Blow. This production really is a great evocation of the Roaring 20s with its fantastic charleston and tango parties, The set and costumes are fabulous. Hiro Takahashi showed just what a fabulous actor he is with his complex interpretation of Tom; there was a real ripple of shock around the auditorium when he got annoyed with Myrtle at the party in their flat and hit her. Then later his genuine grief at Myrtle's death. Even though he was having an affair with Myrtle it was obvious he was almost obsessively jealous of Daisy, even when she was with her cousin Nick. Javier Torres was the brooding presence as Jay Gatsby, invisible at his own parties, always searching for Daisy. I loved the moment when he met Daisy again at Nick's cottage. David Nixon choreographs stillness so well and the way Javier and Dreda froze looking at each other was breath-taking. Dreda was incandescent as Daisy. This is one party I want to be at!

In May, Northern Ballet will perform a Mixed Programme showcasing the artistic versatility of the Company at its home in Leeds and in London at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio Theatre following a sell-out inaugural visit to the theatre in 2014. In a theatre stripped of seating, Transforming Matter is an intimate triple bill which aims to draw attention to the different ways in which an audience member is an active participant in co-creating a dance. The Wild Card initiative aims to bring fresh perspectives to the stage and each time gives emerging artists from different spectrums of the dance landscape the opportunity to curate a mixed bill evening of cutting edge work. Neil Callaghan creates work that sits between the genres of dance and theatre. Since 2002 he has been creating performances both as a solo artist and in collaborations, including the Sadler’s Wells commission Electric Hotel by David Rosenberg andFrauke Requardt. Transforming Matter features two international artists at the cutting edge of dance – Mette Ingvartsen and Jeremy Wade – in rare UK appearances. Callaghan also performs an extract of his latest duet with long-time collaborator Simone Kenyon.
