  1. A lot of pensioners nevertheless have no private pensions, or very small private pensions, live outside the Greater London parameters and are not therefore eligible for free bus or train travel into central London, with all their assets tied up in their home and, consequently, hardly any disposable income. I have a number of arts-loving friends of many decades standing in this position who have been entirely priced out.
  2. Agreed. And I am the world’s greatest sceptic but thought the report worth mentioning nonetheless.
  3. Following Suffolk Council’s plan to axe its entire arts and culture budget, and Middlesbrough Council‘s bankruptcy warning, Shadow Culture Secretary Thangam Debbonaire has described recent arts funding cuts as cultural vandalism and pledged that a Labour government will prioritise arts funding and work to identify new funding sources for arts and culture.
  4. I’m in the balcony row A with my daughter tonight. It’s the lack of leg room that I find hardest but have never had any real problems with the rail, nor any need to shift around. Perhaps it’s a height thing. My daughter and I are 5’3” and under. I will agree that row B is absolutely dreadful. Couldn’t see a thing and will definitely never sit there again under any circumstances but found row C manageable. Am looking forward to tonight and hoping for more emotional engagement than last night seems to have delivered. Hopefully the performance will have settled in after opening night.
  5. But could generate more income as people in the state pension bracket are increasingly being priced out.
  6. It is indeed. Uplifting, refreshing, totally feel-good. Everything, in fact, that the current RB commissions are not.
  7. Friday for me too. And fingers similarly crossed for no unexpected, Nutcracker-style cast changes.
  8. I would also love to see Arielle Smith work with the RB.
  9. I think I might enjoy them rather more than MaddAddam.
  10. Agreed. I found her utterly mesmerising and totally unforgettable.
  11. This totally sums up my reaction to the ENB production. I love the beginning and agree with your reaction to the national dances but it’s the constant swapping around of the Nutcracker and the nephew that wipes it off my ‘see again’ list. How does anyone make sense of it?
  12. Echoing everything that has already been said, thanks to the mods for their generosity, time and commitment and to everyone who posts for being enlightening, informative, amusing, sometimes controversial but always sincere. Hoping you all had as wonderful a Christmas as mine and that 2024 will bring a basket of wonderful things to everyone.
  13. It is one of those works that I never tire of seeing. And Arielle Smith’s Jolly Folly has to be one of the most uplifting post-Covid pieces that I have seen. Shifting back to angst, both Alvin Ailey and Ballet Black manage to present serious issues in a manner that is thought provoking and engaging without being preachy.
  14. I’m not tall, Cescablue - just under 5’4” - and have been happy with the D1-4 block. That said, I may have been particularly lucky with the people in front, who have angled their seats so as to restrict my view as little as possible, or I have been able to move more to the side. Fingers crossed you will also be lucky. And the proximity to the stage does give an extra degree of intimacy.
  15. You are being very diplomatic, Bridiem. I would call it preaching, and sadly there seems to be no escape from it these days.
  16. True to a point, although it seems increasingly the case that the longer the gap since the last performance, the less likelihood of the work ever being revived here in the UK.
  17. All of which makes the tedious selection we get over here seem even more dire.
  18. Echoing everything that has already been said, LinMM, and here’s to a successful operation. Rest up, get well, make sure you’re waited on hand and foot and have a wonderful Christmas notwithstanding your broken wrist.
  19. Nostalgia. The warmth of a remembered hug and the chill of overwhelming sadness at one and the same time.
  20. You’re not the only one, Blossom. And I couldn’t agree more about Joby Talbot’s music.
  21. Afternoon of a Faun and The Firebird. There you are, Dawnstar, two very agreeable additions to your animal themed triple.
