Frederick Ashton Symposium, 22 September 2013

Recommended Posts

This is scheduled to take place at the Royal Ballet School, but details about it are not easy to find. There is nothing about it on the RBS site itself, although that does have details of the symposium on Helpman later in the year.

http://www.royal-ballet-school.org.uk/rhsymposium/

The only details so far online seem to be on the ROH facebook page

"Participants/speakers include Christopher Cook, Alastair Macaulay, Richard Alston, Geraldine Morris, Stephanie Jordan, Jane Pritchard, Lesley Collier, Francesca Hayward, Ricardo Cervera, Antoinette Sibley, Anthony Dowell, Margaret Barbieri, Wendy Ellis-Somes, Desmond Kelly, Liz Cunliffe, Jeanetta Laurence, Kevin O'Hare and Anthony Russell-Roberts (information correct at 30.7.13)"

SheilaC that's unfortunate, but they are a small organization with limited resources at this stage; I would just follow up with them by email and I'm sure you'll get a response.

The details are not on the RBS website as (unlike the Helpmann Symposium) it is not their event; they are simply providing the space for it to be held in.  However, ajf has posted the details above so everyone has them.  I believe there are still tickets available.

This sounds like the very similar but much more comprehensive (and hugely enjoyable) Ashton three-day conference at the Roehampton Institute in 1994.  Many of the participants in this new symposium are the same as those in the original conference (eg. Alastair Macaulay, who gave a wonderfully entertaining talk on the sexual elements of Ashton's ballets, with a beautifully-timed interruption from Alexander Grant).  However, I don't suppose this will stop me from attending the Symposium if I can get a ticket.

One of the great things Balletco did was put the entire Roehampton book/proceedings on line:

Following Sir Fred - book of the 1994 Roehampton Conference

It was a huge undertaking that Brendan McCarthy led for us (Jane Simpson and I did good things for it too). A wonderful set of pages to dip into.

Actually just looking at the contents page is fun...

Thank you, Bruce, for this truly EXTRAORDINARY work.  I hope it is referenced for ALL in the mentioned one day conference.  It is especially refreshing as it is available to ALL at no cost.  In the truest sense it is a public service.
