Ooh I think passing Grade 1 Piano is a great thing. I failed it first time round. I was very pregnant with non-dd. It was a grand piano which I hadn't played before and i couldn't find middle C. I failed by two marks. Think the examiner might have given me those for the fact I had to stretch over my enormous stomach to reach the keys. Well done to your son Pups_mum because I can still remember how nervous I was and when you are nervous your hands shake!

I think passing Grade 1 is probably the hardest, so that's really fantastic! Think how hard it is to go into that examination room all on your own, especially when you are only nine. Talking of musical children, I have a daughter who is currently in her last year at uni studying music performance, specialising in singing (classical) and wondered if anyone knew of any summer intensives that may be appropriate? I told her I would ask the forum as it does seem to be the font of all knowledge :D

Well done to your son, Pups_Mum. The first exam is always daunting because the child does not know what to expect and has to go into a room and play to a complete stranger. I did quite a few music exams as a child and found them really nerve-wracking. I much preferred academic exams. I have to keep my nerves firmly under control when my children do their music exams. I never listen at the door though, as some parents do.

A4D - I'd suggest you start a new thread about the singing intensives.

And well done to your son Pups_mum. I was terrified when I did my first (non-academic) exam - adult tap - last year!

  • 1 month later...

Update - daughter had her RVC (London) interview today (quite enjoyed it apparently - lots of short "interviews" and a group activity) and goes to Nottingham tomorrow - then a long month ahead waiting for results!

She did at least manage to get a waiting list place at Glasgow saying they'd be in touch if a place came up and to contact them on results day if she needs to, so won't give up hope yet, but we've met so many reapplicants that she's fully expecting to have to try again next year. Keep your fingers crossed.

Julie

A boy I knew last year was desperate to study medicine.  He didn't get any offers but was short listed by Edinburgh.  He kept in contact throughout the year, just gentle chats, asking for updates on how/what to do if he ended up re-applying and for info on the state of the waiting list.

They got funding in April to take on some extra students and immediately offered him a place.

Two of my son's friends had that sort of message from universities last year - medicene at Cardiff and history at Swansea.  Cardiff made a late offer in April/May time and the other friend did not meet grades for her 1st choice and emailed Swansea on results day and was offered a place. So it is worth keeping in touch.

Well Sean,my ballet-hating 16 year old son, after a long chat with me,has decided to leave school as soon as his 8 GCSE`s are over in June. He has handed in an application form for a FT course at the local college. His school are not offering `A` Level Politics, which he really wanted to do,and he has been told he won`t get a high enough grade at GCSE Maths to do it at `A` Level, which was the other subject he wanted to do. Plus the school has raised the entrance bar this year for all 6th Form courses. You have to have a minimum of 6 GCSE`s,where in previous years they would have taken 5. I`m quite sure he`ll pass all 8 of his subjects, but at the college for this particular course, the entrance requirement is only 4 GCSE`s min. So I think this gives him a better chance of being accepted. He is keen on the idea of doing some sort of advice work, and has told me recently he really likes the idea of becoming a Social Worker. The course is a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care [ long-winded title !]. The "normal" BTEC National Diploma is worth 2 `A` Levels, but this Extended version is worth 3,and you complete it in 2 years. What seems really good about this course though,is the amount of practical, work experience that is compulsory.100 hours in the first year, the same in 2nd. I would imagine so many young people leave school/college with no work experience,so the fact this particular course has it tied in I think,is a bonus. On a separate issue, the house i rent is still up For Sale, but at least people seem to have stopped enquiring about it as they did in the first few weeks,so I don`t have strangers traipsing through my home every day.!!!!

As related else where, I was pretty dubious of an Extended Btech Diploma as an alternative to A levels, but my DS, who is studying for one of these beasties, has had offers from everywhere he has applied.

I must confess I also rang up 3 universities (including Durham, thought Oxford was pushing my luck) to ask if they accepted them, and they said yes they are just as welcome as a more traditional qualification.

So good luck to your son - the world needs good Social workers and he'll never be out of a job!

Not such a major thing, but big for us -my 9year old son did his grade 1 piano examin December and we've now heard that he got a distinction. It's a really big achievement for him because unlike my other children he is very shy and lacking in self confidence. I did wonder if he would even manage to go into the exam room so I am extremely proud of him. Only potential hitch is that I know from previous experience that exam success is usually followed by an invitation to participate in a concert that a group of local music teachers put on every year. That could be asking a bit too much of him.But I'll cross that bridge when we come to it and in the meanwhile I'm enjoying the warm glow of proud motherhood!

Just thought I'd up date re the concert. Well it was this weekend, and as expected he was very anxious and not at all keen to do it but didn't want to let his teacher down so reluctantly agreed to try. And he was GREAT! He was clearly the youngest participant and he played his piece flawlessly. It did help that the piano was positioned such that he had his back to the audience, so he said he just pretended he was at home doing his practice and that there was nobody there! I am really, really proud of him, not just from the musical accomplishment point of view, but because he managed to do something that he was extremely scared of, mainly out of respect for his teacher, which I think is a very good thing.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks everyone - yes very proud, happy and relieved as I had a feeling she might have to apply again next year (lots don't get in the first year - they have loads of re-applicants these days).  As you can see from my previous postings - it's a hard slog to get to this point (loads of work experience, attracting enough attention in the personal statement to get any interviews, then a one in three or four chance from those interviewed), and she's still got to get the grades for her A levels!

Still waiting to hear from Bristol and RVC - hopefully this week.  Nottingham's always been her favourite, but she loved Bristol too.

So, all replies now in...

She was very lucky to have four interviews from her four applications (we haven't met many others), two offers (Notts and RVC), one waiting list (Glasgow) and one rejection (Bristol).

Now a nervous few months waiting until A level results come in - could be going through it all again next year!

Turns out it wasn't a straight rejection from Bristol either. They said she was a "near miss" and would she mind them contacting her on results day if there are spaces :-)

Very proud of her (and to think we were disappointed when she didn't get into WL a few years ago!)

Oh, Julie! I love ballet, you all know that, but it isn't the only thing in life. You know my dance dream shattered early but I damaged my neck and shoulders when I was 13 in a car accident. It would have been far worse to be within touching distant to lose it at then. I am sure your daughter will make you even prouder of her in the years to come. You are in my prayers. How are you, personally speaking?

Thank you Fiz. And not too bad thanks. Sorted through mum's clothes etc yesterday which was a bit emotional but ok. Dad's coping ok - gets upset, but that's not surprising . Hope things are going ok for you xx

Thanks. Dad is sleeping a lot and I think he's slipping away. My uncle went the same way. Mum is slowly accepting things and now that there is a carer and a nurse coming in, she doesn't fuss quite so much although it does start again when my brother goes away. Luckily he only has to go for a week a month, so it is easier for her but I am concerned about the effect on him. You are in my thoughts and prayers, Julie, and I will pray for your father too. x
