Viviana Durante Co - 7 Deadly Sins

Recommended Posts

I just came on here to post this link, which I received just now in email from Wilton's.  Booking would appear to be already open.

Wilton's is unraked stalls and a three-sided balcony.  For dance I would go either front row of stalls or centre balcony, as sightlines may otherwise be poor.

Does anyone know how badly restricted the view from the balcony side slips is?

The ones furthest away from the stage are good but are priced more than the others where you will probably have to lean forward.

Are all the seats adjustable (i.e. movable) chairs?  It's a long time since I've been there.

No.  I seem to recall that they are ordinary chairs which have been anchored or tied together (and there is absolutely no room between them, so you have to hope for slender neighbours who are considerate with their elbows).

Is this an expanded version of the 1973 ballet?

My memory is that it was one part of a triple so about 45mins at most??

I looked it up & the Macmillan website has 3 different versions listed, apparently of differing lengths, though none of them sound like they're full length.

I can't decide whether to give this a go or not. Morera, Hamilton & Soares are appealing but I'm not keen on what little I know about the burlesque style I gather Meow Meow is an exponent of.

Have never heard of this venue before (from out of town!)

Its probably sold out already, but csn snyobe give me a quick idea of where this is in relation to nearest we’ll know landmark/nearest tube please.... thank you!

Tower Hill (near Tower Bridge) would be you're starting point - then google-map it

I’m sure I know even less than the little you know, but the work itself is by Brecht and Weill, in which repertory Meow Meow recently triumphed in the West End and on Radio 3 (with Weimar specialist Barry Humphries). In fact she was rather more authentic than the somewhat over-promoted Ute Lemper.

The use of the word “burlesque” in the context of Weimar cabaret is a new one to me. The word has a long history but has come to mean striptease to many people, and vaudeville-like entertainment to Americans, neither of which have anything to do with the songs of Brecht and Weill.

I didn't mean that she would be performing burlesque-style in this production but I was under the impression that she mostly performed as a burlesque singer. Perhaps I have got her mixed up with someone else.

I saw Odysseus at Wilton's a couple of years ago ...I sat upstairs and had a good view but can't remember exactly which seat ...on the right hand side though.

The place has a terrific atmosphere and because there was all this theatre "smoke" which seem to seep everywhere even more unsettling!!

I got lost finding my seat at one point and felt quite scared in this corridor with brick walls I really did think I might suddenly meet a ghost from another century.

The nearest station was on the Docklands railway ....it wasn't Tower Hill though .....will have to get the London map out to check and was then about a ten min walk along a straight road which ran beside the railway. There were flats on the other side though.

The turning for Wilton's was on the left off this road.

I am tempted by this but will only go if can get a good seat.

The station I used was Shadwell and I just walked straight along Cable Street and turned left at one point into the street which leads to Graces Alley where Wilton's is.

Mark Bruce's Company performed Odysseus and they were terrific just as they were in Dracula ...but quite a few people there didn't go to the performance they  seem to just go there to eat and drink so I think it's popular locally for that as well.

Apparently Tower Hill and Aldgate East are reasonably close as well .....depends which direction you're starting from I suppose.

According to Wilton's website the DLR station is called Tower Gateway http://www.wiltons.org.uk/visit

I've used Aldgate East on the handful of occasions when I've been to Wilton's & it only takes me about 5 minutes to walk from there, though I see Wilton's website says 9 minutes - admittedly I am a fast walker.

I think I chose Shadwell because the walk seemed so straightforward ....not too many different roads etc ...and same as you it says 13 mins on the website but I'm sure it was only about 10 mins!! Mind you it was a cold day in March when I went so no doubt was walking quickly.

Was gutted to have to miss Macbeth which Mark Bruce's Company performed at Wilton's last year.

I've just been sent a note saying this has now been cancelled:

Viviana Durante Company regrets to announce that the previously advertised production of Seven Deadly Sins (a ballet chanté) by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill with choreography by Kenneth MacMillan, which was due to open at Wilton's Music Hall on May 8, has been cancelled.

In its place they are pleased to announce a new production, THREE/8:38/SEVEN, featuring a concert performance of Kurt Weill's music and a new dance work by Javier de Frutos featuring Viviana Durante.

Please note the evening will no longer feature either the MacMillan choreography nor Meow Meow performing.

Oooo I wonder what happened there then?!

no idea really - they gave no reason. I can only wildly guess that the singer was indisposed, and at short notice, they could not find and rehearse a replacement. But that is a guess, I hasten to add

Great shame - I’d been looking forward very much to Laura Morera et al dancing MacMillan’s Seven Deadly Sins and I saw the production had been highlighted in the Guardian I think only yesterday.  Not sure about the replacement programme.
