English National Ballet — "She Persisted" at Sadlers Wells 04-13 April 2019 (inc casting)

Recommended Posts

"Three iconic stories and three bold works on and by women.

Broken Wings
Iconic painter Frida Kahlo is the heroine of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Broken Wings, a colourful ballet full of warmth and passion. Based on Kahlo’s life and art, it is “a marvellous image of creativity and power” (The Independent).

Nora
Stina Quagebeur, First Artist of the Company, choreographs her first work for the main stage. Nora is inspired by the lead character in Henrik Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House, a woman on the path to independence.

Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring)
Pina Bausch’s unforgettable production features 13 male and 13 female dancers on a stage covered in soil. Dancing the selection and sacrifice of a terrified victim, it is as gut-wrenching and galvanising as Stravinsky’s score, performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic. Le Sacre du printemps returns following sold out performances in 2017".

Out of interest  I emailed ENB to ask if Francesca Velicu will be reprising her award-winning role as the Chosen One in Le Sacre du printemps,  and if so on what dates.

I had a very speedy reply, albeit of limited assistance,  since historically it seems the way it works with the Pina Bausch Foundation is that the role of the Chosen One is never announced in advance, and is decided upon shortly before curtain-up; whilst  it is hoped that  Francesca Velicu will repeat her  role they cannot be specific about which dates she will appear.

I suppose there is some sort of dramatic logic in having the dancer playing the sacrificial "Chosen One" chosen herself, at short notice, in this way! But it does not help booking choices for anyone wanting to see a particular dancer...

English National Ballet continues to showcase the woman’s voice in choreography with its second programme dedicated to female choreography, She Persisted, at Sadler’s Wells in April 2019. Following 2016’s acclaimed She Said programme, She Persisted includes the premiere of Nora, a new work by Company member Stina Quagebeur, based on Ibsen’s A Doll’s House.

Pina Bausch’s Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) returns following sold out performances in 2017 - only the fourth time it will have been performed in the UK since its creation in 1975. An equal number of female and male dancers perform on a stage covered in soil, dancing the selection and sacrifice of a victim. The music by Stravinsky is performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic.

First premiered in April 2016, Annabelle Lopez Ochoas Broken Wings is also revived. Based on the life of Frida Kahlo, Broken Wings was nominated for Best Modern Choreography at the 2016 Critics Circle National Dance Awards. Broken Wings will see legendary ballet star and Guest Principal Repititeur at English National Ballet, Irek Mukhamedov, reprise his role as Diego Rivera.

Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of English National Ballet, said:
“When I became Artistic Director of English National Ballet I was determined to create the right opportunities and space to have more female voices on stage. In the last six years we have presented 28 works by female choreographers across the company, from our She Said programme in 2016, to Emerging Dancer, Choreographics and Engagement programmes and commissions. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved so far, and thrilled that with She Persisted, we add another female voice to our repertoire with Nora from our own Stina Quagebeur, and we continue our commitment to nurture and champion female creators "

I thought about asking this question on the Broken Wings thread but thought this one was probably more appropriate.

Do we know if we're getting another Grayson Perry curtain design as we did with "She Said"?  It really added to the mixed bill and went especially well with Broken Wings.

Another one?  Can't they reuse the original?  (Or did it reference all 3 ballets too clearly?)

I'm going on 9th April.....no idea who is dancing!

But last night watched a rehearsal at Markova House with Katja Khaniukova Barry Drummond and Irek.....didn't realise how exhausting that role must be for him....especially in the costume. Anyway guess Katja and Tamara will be at least two doing the main role in Broken Wings....not sure about others.

Incidentally I spoke to one of the ENB dancers after class on Wednesday and they still don't know exactly when they are moving into the new City Island site .....and I'm sure they've only got Markova House till the end of March!!

Disappointed that Tamara Rojo is injured and unable to dance, as I didn't get to see her in Broken Wings last time either :(

Blast.  I've just realized there isn't a single matinee for this run either :(

I think when I queried it they said it was something to do with how long it takes to clear up after the Pina Bausch. They could, of course, have had a matinee and not an evening show...

Oh, of course.  But it is a shame that people from out of town may not be able to get to it.

Yes, a Sunday afternoon (when they wouldn't be likely to plan an evening show anyway) would surely have been a good solution...
