Victoria | Mixed Programme | The Great Gatsby | Cinderella | Dracula

*New dates announced*

Northern Ballet has announced full details of its upcoming performances for the whole of 2019. Commencing its spring season with the world première of Cathy Marston’s Victoria, the Company will then make its debut at Northern Stage, Newcastle with a Mixed Programme, followed by the revival of David Nixon’s The Great Gatsby which tours to Salford and Southampton. Northern Ballet’s autumn season begins with a new Mixed Programme, followed by national tours of David Nixon’s Cinderella and Dracula; bringing the Company to the eve of its 50th anniversary celebrations in 2020.

Victoria

Victoria tells the astounding life story of Queen Victoria through the eyes of her youngest child and lifelong companion Beatrice. Travelling back in time from Victoria’s death bed, Beatrice relives her memories of her mother as a secluded widow before discovering her anew as she transcribes the Queen’s intimate diaries. Wife, mother, lover, Empress; Victoria presents the various, often conflicting faces of this emblematic monarch.

Choreographed by Cathy Marston to an original score by Philip Feeney, with sets and costumes designed by Steffen Aarfing, lighting by Alastair West and dramaturgy by Uzma Hameed.

Victoria premières in Leeds in March 2019 followed by a tour visiting Sheffield, London, Leicester, Edinburgh, Milton Keynes, Cardiff and Belfast until June 2019.

Mixed Programme

Northern Ballet makes its debut at Newcastle’s Northern Stage with a Mixed Programme featuring The Shape of Soundby Kenneth Tindall, an abstract work performed to Vivaldi’s iconic The Four Seasons reimagined by Max Richter; The Kingdom of Back by Morgann Runacre-Temple exploring the story of the exceptionally talented Nannerl Mozart growing up in the shadow of her younger brother on his journey to immortality; and Mamela by Mlindi Kulashe, a haunting exploration of the conflict between the desires of the head and the heart. This is a dazzling and emotive programme of new dance by three of the UK’s most exciting young choreographers.

Northern Ballet will also perform a new Mixed Programme at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, Leeds in September 2019 followed by additional dates in London. Details of this Mixed Programme are to be announced.

The Great Gatsby

Mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby has a penchant for lavish parties and beautiful women. But, as the sparkling façade of his world starts to slip, the loneliness, obsession and tragedy that lies beneath is revealed. Adapted from the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is a gateway to the decadent 1920s in this blockbuster ballet bursting with passion, style and drama.

Choreographed by David Nixon OBE to a score by Sir Richard Rodney Bennett CBE, with sets designed by Jérôme Kaplan, lighting by Tim Mitchell and costumes by David Nixon OBE.

The Great Gatsby will be performed in Salford and Southampton in May 2019.

Cinderella

After a glorious summer day ends in tragedy, Cinderella begins a desolate new life of servitude. Devastated by the loss of her father, and excluded by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella finds solace on the frozen lake where she first sets eyes on her Prince Charming. As her love for the Prince grows, a surprise encounter in the marketplace changes Cinderella’s destiny.

Choreographed by David Nixon OBE to an original score by Philip Feeney, with sets designed by Duncan Hayler, lighting by Tim Mitchell and costumes by David Nixon OBE.

Cinderella opens in Woking in September 2019 followed by a national tour to Sheffield, Hull, Newcastle, Nottingham, Norwich and Leeds until January 2020.

Dracula

Emerging from his world of perpetual darkness, an unlikely romance blossoms between Count Dracula and the unbidding Mina. A creature who should inspire repulsion in every living thing but who has seduced countless generations, Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire lives on in this extraordinary ballet with a dramatic bite.

Choreographed by David Nixon OBE to a score featuring music by Alfred Schnittke, Sergei Rachmaninov, Arvo Pärt and Michael Daugherty, with sets designed by Ali Allen, lighting by Tim Mitchell and costumes by David Nixon OBE.

Dracula opens in Canterbury in October 2019 with further performances in Leeds until November 2019.
