penelopesimpson
Worth looking at their first dance, a sort of jungle themed piece which brought them to public attention. The crowds always loved them but unfortunately the judges will stuck in the Russian set piece style. Sorry I can't do the link - can someone else? I remember watching an interview Paul did just after they revealed their dance saying that when Christopher Dean first showed he the choreography he said 'you want me to do what???' That's because its all skated at an incredibly low level. Edited January 7, 2019 by penelopesimpson

Mary
I've enjoyed watching these greatly, thanks everyone. A bit of a change from Patineurs!
penelopesimpson
Isabelle and Paul had such charisma. Christopher Dean married Isabelle but it didn't go the course.
RuthE
I realize this is a very old post, but it just caught my eye on the first page of the thread: On 26/01/2018 at 11:28, Fonty said: I used to love ice skating, but if they don't show it regularly you get out of touch with who the current people are. Watch show-jumping. I hadn't for years, but when I switched on the TV for bits of it at the 2016 Olympics I discovered that the "current people" on the British team are mostly still the same people as the ones I remember being the "current people" in the mid-80s New horses, though...

This is actually one of the reasons I love both showjumping and cross country. They may only get broadcast on the BBC a couple of times a year but most of the riders are still familiar names, many from when I was having my teenage horsy phase 20-odd years ago (I helped out at a stables whose owner had a horse that was ridden by John Whitaker). It's great to see a sport where people can still compete into their sixties. Sports like gymnastics or swimming on the other hand seem to have an almost completely new set of competitors at every Olympics/Commonwealth Games. Ice skating (trying to drag this back on topic!) isn't quite as bad but still isn't great for longevity.
RuthE
Sorry to take it back off-topic, but as you mention gymnastics... ...when I watch women’s gymnastics on TV I’m always astonished by the ridiculous anomaly (I mean this in terms of utmost respect and astonishment) that is Oksana Chusovitina. She’s THREE years older than me. She has been competing at international level since I started watching the sport - which was at the Barcelona (1992) Olympics. When I was 14. And she’s still going - specialising in vault, which surely has to be higher-impact than any apparatus other than possibly floor...
alison
In my hunt for the "Dance Passion" showings, I've just found that the World ladies' skating is supposedly currently on the BBC Red Button. Can't help wondering how many other useful things I miss on there because of lack of information
Sim
I remember the days when figure skating was actually on the BBC, not consigned elsewhere. The good old days of Grandstand and World of Sport when they showed things that people might have been interested in. I never know when the skating championships are on anymore, and when I do find out, the only way I can watch is on YouTube. So now I can check the ubiquitous red button and see what happens! Thanks Alison.
alison
Well, the Europeans are usually early-to-mid January and the Worlds late March (unless things have changed since they disappeared off the BBC), but more I can't really say. Anyway, I suppose the BBC would argue that the Red Button is BBC!

Fiz
Oh, I made a discovery on Twitter the other day about Bolero as skated by Torvill and Dean. An acquaintance of mine put a film clip of the actress Carole Lombard dancing with another actor to Bolero. It was stunning and so sensual. However I recognised a great deal of the ice dance version from it! I will see if I can find it and share it with you so you can judge for yourselves. jm365
What was the fiolm? Does anyone know who her partner was? And I love the orchestra! Thank you so much for putting it up. Fiz
It’s George Raft but if you follow the YouTube link it says that only he and Carole Lombard were used in close up shots. I know that Christopher Dean was greatly influenced by musicals and music plus given that he was using a lot of old Hollywood songs for ice dance inspiration I am fairly certain that he saw this. I wonder if he was influenced by it either consciously or unconsciously. The dance lifts look so similar to those in the Torvill and Dean Bolero.

It's a pity Bejart didn't see it - it might of encouraged him to create something a whole lot more interesting than his Bolero - or 'piggy in the middle' as I think of it. 🙄

Dawnstar
Anyone else watching the 2021 Ice Skating World Championships? After nearly 6 hours of Ladies' Short Programme coverage I was unimpressed that the TV cut off just after the final skater finished but before her result was given! Had to look it up & was pleased to find she placed second and the skater I liked the most is still in the lead, the Russian Anna Shcherbakova who skated to Massenet music that's used in Manon.

Dawnstar
I've been watching short programmes on Eurosport today (having got a subscription for the first time last autumn - I figured if I wasn't spending any money on theatre tickets I could justify spending £20 on TV for once). However the BBC is showing free programmes from tomorrow. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/winter-sports/56497419
