LinMM Posted November 28, 2013 Share Posted November 28, 2013 Loved that Janet especially liked the idea of having one for when the dementia sets in!! I bought a new travel mascot the other day......the snow dog from the new snowman film! I bought it in Whitby so that's its name! It's quite ridiculous I know but if I'm going on a long car journey I always have some sort of travel mascot with me. Often a teddy all alone Ive rescued from some charity shop and sometimes the soft toy from a character in a book. Mog....the cat...(Judith Kerr) was my mascot for quite a while. Now it's Whitby the snow dog!! I don't know whether it works but its supposed to remind me to drive carefully and not get het up about the traffic!! So snow dog will have his work cut out. When I was teaching many classes had a class bear that different children took home for weekends or different holidays to share adventures when came back to school (hilarious episode of the Simpsons recently with Larry the lamb as the mascot) For the summer hols I would take in whoever was my travel mascot at the time so I had to share my summer adventures too! I think I took it a bit more seriously than the kids though as I remember one bear I had at the time called Cuthbert had to literally " see" everything so would be poking out of a bag or rucksack so he could see the Eiffel Tour or the Arc de Triomphe or the crowds on the metro etc etc!! To get back to real dogs......how many of those above reasons do you think Chunkydog could fulfil.....at a push?! 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Fiz Posted December 29, 2016 Share Posted December 29, 2016 Dog news - my ballet friends know all this - but we had to have little Minette put to sleep in October 2013 just before we moved. She had developed heart problems and began to have fits. After a particularly bad one, the vet suggested we have her put to sleep. He knew that we were moving and he said she would not cope with the move at all. In April 2015 through one of my husband's dog walker friends, we located a breeder and have another Labrador, a yellow one this time called Tessa. She is very pretty and affectionate. Jan McNulty Posted December 31, 2016 Share Posted December 31, 2016 Chipdog came to live with me from the Merseyside Dogs Home 8 weeks ago. He is between 4 and 5 years old. He is a wonderful house dog and is doing really well at our socialisation classes but he is a total vandal when we are out on ordinary walks! He is absolutely full of character! He had the snip just before Christmas so was only allowed gentle walks till his stitches came out yesterday. Gentle by his standards but very stressful for me!!! And his favourite game became losing his Kong Extreme beneath the sofa and then pestering me till I retrieved it for him! The owner informed me that he is now in the Top 5 of dog escapologists - in over 20 years only 5 dogs have managed to get out of their rooms and Chip is number 5!!! For those who can access twitter here is the video she captured of him in the attempt. He did not get out then but they were in the office working out how to block the access hold when there was a scratching at the door and there was Chip. Both my Welsh Springers were qualified and entered and we (me, hubby and daughter came home from uni to come with us) set off at 5am with me hoping that one of them might be lucky enough to get placed - the younger one has been more successful than his housemate at shows recently. Really happy when Jiffy was placed 5th in his class (only 7 in the class but all the ones who beat him were from well known breeders a all lovely dogs). Then a bit of a wait before Tartu went into his class and I nearly fell over when the judge came over to award him the first place! The steward said I got the prize for the biggest smile of the day. Absolutely thrilled and dh and dd were grinning from the "audience". So lovely to go in for the "challenge" at Crufts - always special but particularly there (that's where all the class winners go in to choose the Best Dog - and Reserve - who will compete against the Best Bitch for Best of Breed) Lots of people taking photos and congratulating us - and his breeder was there to see it too (she's not too well these days and we don't often see her at shows) - very special. I'll try to put a photo of him on later. I watched the group judging on the live feed while dh and dd were watching the rugby - if you get a chance to see it on YouTube have a look at the flatcoated retriever who came 2nd - what a stunning dog and, imho, should've won the group (I know I'm a bit biased but still...) 9 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sadly we are both likely to be working until we drop - no early retirement for us - so therefore no dog, unless there is a breed you can leave on its own for 8 hours at a time! We would love a dog too meadowblythe but are in the same boat working all the time. My DD nags for a dog but with work, college and dancing it would be far too cruel. JulieW Posted March 4, 2018 Author Share Posted March 4, 2018 Hello everyone - is that time of year again - Crufts starts on Thursday and this year will be there on Sunday (they rotate the groups to be on different days, so this year it's the turn of gundogs to be on the final day - I like being on the final day but the weekends are so busy with general visitors, it's really crowded around the shopping stands!) Is anyone else going? There's some coverage on Channel 4 but don't expect to see much of the actual showing (except for the group judging) - it'll all be other "more exciting" events and strange interviews - but better than nothing 😉 Having done so well last year I'm not expecting much this time but I always enjoy it - there's something about being on that green carpet and having lovely big rings to show in. Here's a photo of Jiffy at a recent show - can't believe he's already nearly 2 and a half and Tartu's nearly 6 - was funny reading back through this thread - I first posted before we'd even got Tartu! 11 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Unlikely to make it into the TV coverage but look out for the one in the Gundog Group because we'll probably know them and will be rooting for them in the group (it's a very small world - a bit like ballet!!) The flatcoated retriever who won the group and won Reserve Best in Show 3 years ago is a half brother to my flatty in my avatar photo (they have the same handsome dad). LinMM Posted March 12, 2018 Share Posted March 12, 2018 My favourite Crufts dog this year was the runner up in the final ...the pointer ..thought was a really beautiful dog and had a lovely face! At another point in the competition there was a rather lovely parsons Jack Russell....Id love some kind of JR to win ....have they ever won at Crufts?
