jmhopton
Just see that Australian Ballet are doing their Ronald Hynd's Merry Widow at cinemas on Sept. 20th. It's one of my favourite ballets but I've never been able to see it live as no UK or visiting Company seems to do it (though I have 2 recordings of it; one of them Australian Ballet) so it will be great to see it on the big screen. Next best thing to a live performance. I don't know how many cinemas are showing it but it seems to be at most of the Odeon cinemas.

Beryl H
Just to warn anyone thinking of going to see Mayerling at Brighton Odeon on Monday, the cinema is closed until further notice due to fire alarm problems, I had booked by E-mail and luckily they have refunded me online. It will be shown at the Duke of York cinema instead of the usual Dukes at Kommedia.

alison
Well, since my local (suburban London) is charging nearly £25 for the privilege, I shall be giving this one a miss - especially since I'm also having to cope with increased prices at the ROH. It does however mean that I shan't get to see James Hay's Bratfisch, which is a real shame

alison
Just a reminder that there's a repeat of the Bolshoi Don Quixote (new production) this Sunday (times may vary?), followed by a live Nutcracker from the Royal Opera House on Monday. Given that the Bolshoi is a repeat, I wonder what the scheduling considerations were that had to put it a day or two in front of the Royal Ballet one (just like La Sylphide, but at least that one had the excuse of being live)? I don't think it can help audiences for either broadcast to have them that close together.

alison
Maybe, but are they the type of people who would go to see Don Q as well, I wonder, or do they just go for the Nutcracker because it's Christmassy?

I wonder who does the casting for the movie transmissions Yes, it is odd. Belyakov and Marchenkova have normally been cast with Stepanova, who also is the featured ballerina in the trailers. All three are relatively tall while replacement Smirnova is on a smaller scale. We'll see how it looks at the movies but I have my reservations. To your point, Bolshoi casting decision guidelines in general seem to be (1) director favorites (2) sponsor favorites (3) suitability for the role. When I see a member of corps de ballets being casted for a leading role I wonder if it's an outstanding talent like Osipova and Vasiliev or if they are short of principals due to illness and other obligations. I've seen in Amsterdam such a cast in Spartacus and wasn't too impressed. Never saw that dancer being casted in a leading role again.
Farfallina
Casting seems to follow what you are describing. I would like to see more variety. They have so many wonderfull dancers. I would like to see e.g. Maria Vinogradova and more of Ovcharenko.....
