access to russian style ballet training - private lessons

Hello everyone,

Apologies if this has been covered somewhere before, I have been browsing the site but not very good at the search function!

I have seen  lots of recommendations for private teachers but having been out of the UK,  not sure what style they teach and wondered if anyone knew any that specialised in Russian training or indeed where dc could take occasional classes  -  London would be easiest for us.    Thank you in advance.

Having trained in Russia for the last 2 years I think DS would certainly highly recommend Evgeny at London Russian Ballet School.

There are also Russian ballet teachers at danceworks which is more central if Clapham is difficult to get to...

Sorry to be quite naïve but can anyone concisely explain the difference between a typical RAD based training & 'Russian'?

Just curious really as no real chance for DD to experience Russian (unless at a Masterclass or Summer School & would be worried to throw her in out of her depth to something.)

What do people recommend looking at to get a visual flavour?

I also highly recommend LRBS for strict Russian ballet training- as well as Evgeny, Anatoly Sidrov is also excellent 😍

You can look at youtube footage of Vaganova academy exam (and other) classes.... though tbh I think the best way to find out is to give the class a try and see if it suits you. I know as soon as my DS tried Russian training (after a few years of once a week RAD) his engagement with ballet changed from 'love' to 'live'. Can't really describe it any other way, and I'm not sure any explanation of how the positions and style are different would tell you if it suited you without experiencing it....

My daughter has been in Russia for six years; four years training at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and two years now as a professional. She describes the style as ‘much dancier’ with more flair and a big emphasis placed on acting, aswell as dancing, the roles - dance acting is one of the core classes at the Academy. She says Russian dancers ‘dance from the soul’ and because they are trained with rigour from a young age, the technique is in their bodies and they can layer the acting on top of this.

She wrote a blog during her time at the Academy which provides an insight into her life and training there which you might find helps. She was introduced to Russian training by Chika and Yury at Bristol Russian Ballet School and trains with them if she can when she is back in the UK. She highly recommends them, as do I, as they also provide fabulous support to parents of dancers, something which I found invaluable.
