A few more details sneak out about the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, in the Financial Review article:

"Britain’s most famous ballerina, Darcey Bussell, will return to the stage for the finale of the London Olympics.

Bussell, 43, will dance at the end of the Olympics closing ceremony, with four male dancers, in a showcase choreographed by the Royal Ballet’s artistic associate, Christopher Wheeldon."

I have little doubt that Darcey will put in the work to be back in shape by the Finale, though I'm inevitably tempted to wonder if she will be faster, higher, and stronger than of yore. And if she, her supporting quartet, and Chris Wheeldon are permitted to use the dedicated Olympic traffic lane to get to and fro, then I might even be converted to thinking that it's all a grand idea after all.

"Savion Glover takes on Fred Astaire": Judith Mackrell. Thanks, John.

Interesting article. Fred Astaire certainly blurred boundaries. He was a show dancer, who combined street dance tap with the grace of a ballet dancer. George Balanchine, who ignored boundaries as well, considered Fred Astaire to be the finest male dancer.

Savion Glover, also an amazement, continues to move on. With the great physical demands that ballet can place on a dancer's body, Savion Glover, claims that he can dance for hours and not even get a blister. Apples and oranges, perhaps, but certainly something to think about.

The comparison is interesting and there are some nice video clips here.
