To mark its 70 years, Welsh National Opera brings a brand new work to the Royal Opera House. Commemorating the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, young British composer Iain Bell uses David Jones’s epic war poem as the basis for his new opera.

 

But rather than simply reporting the horrors of the Somme, In Parenthesis dares to offer hope. Even among the destruction that Private John Ball and his comrades face, a fragile flowering of regeneration and rebirth can be found.
