  1. I was thinking the exact same thing. I suspect the Pite/Wheeldon/Cherkaoui triple bill was chosen instead as the other five relays this season are either 19th-century or MacMillan ballets, and no cinema season other than the very first has ever failed to showcase a contemporary ballet. Last season three of the six relays were of contemporary work, and most of it was Wheeldon's (Alice, Winter's Tale, Corybantic Games). It's a shame as I'd much, much rather see the company in Fokine, Ashton and Balanchine.
  2. I didn't know it had been shown in cinemas (presumably just in the UK?) before - was the recording the same as the 2009 one that was issued on DVD?
  3. Sorry for the repetition, I seem to have posted at the same time as Geoff managed to upload the screenshot.
  4. I believe this is the tweet: And I was looking back at the older tweets and found the remark on Hayward aliceinwoolfland refers to: Interestingly, this was the tweeter's reaction to Osipova as Giselle: The bluntness seems part of his/her style, but I think the perspective is valid.
  5. Shklyarov - he seems to pronounce it as 'Sh-clear-off' himself:
  6. I believe you've confused Lizbie1 with Erica.
  7. Juliet, the daughter of Capulet - Ekaterina Krysanova Romeo, the son of Montague - Vladislav Lantratov Mercutio, Romeo’s friend - Igor Tsvirko Benvolio, Montague’s nephew and Romeo’s friend - Dmitry Dorokhov Tybalt, Lady Capulet’s nephew - Vitaly Biktimirov The full cast list can be found here: https://www.bolshoi.ru/en/performances/4008/roles/#20180121180000

  9. Because he said "We follow him and see his point of view"? Insofar as Siegfried's attention is on Odette, the ballet could still be focused on her, don't you think? I do wonder how it will be possible to see the whole story from his point of view though, if that's what the quote means. Now that we've been told that Odette is also von Rothbart's "creation", we already know more than Siegfried presumably will!
  10. Yes! Especially when the other swans in their long, greyish skirts look more like ostriches... The snowflakes in the RB's Nutcracker look perfect in their long, jagged-edged skirts though - I get a sense of flurrying snow that I don't with shorter, stiffer tutus.
  11. I hope this post is not too late, but I have a question about the 2005 DVD. Could anyone tell me the name of the dancer in the role of Persephone? She dances with Gartside as Pluto in Act III. She's also one of the woodland creatures in the opening scene and the camera lingers on her quite a bit, as if she were a rising star. Is she still with the company? (Incidentally, it was interesting to see Cuthbertson, Lamb, McRae and Liam Scarlett in supporting parts. And I thought Martin Harvey was perfect as Eros - handsome, haughty and mischievous at the same time).
  12. I've noticed that in last year's cinema relay and again in this year's that Hans-Peter/the Nutracker's hair isn't golden anymore. All the previous dancers I'd seen, speaking just in terms of the three or four relays before 2016 and the 2000 DVD, had had their hair sprayed gold (or were they wigs?), so I'd understood the colour to be a significant detail, something that marked Hans-Peter out as a fairytale prince, a romantic, idealized figure of a young girl's dream, in contrast to the boy next door, Clara's partner at the party. Would anyone know why this detail is no longer deemed important by the stagers?
  13. Thank you, Janet (Ballet keeps me sane too!). Did McRae dance the Prince in any relays before the 2012 one? In 2013, the Prince was Bonelli, in 2015, Kish, and in 2016, Bonelli again. He did 2 with Yoshida, I think possibly also one with Marquez ...? Not sure of the years. Thank you. I remember now - he did dance in the 2009 relay, with Yoshida (with Iohna Loots as a charmingly feisty Clara). In 2012, it was with Marquez. It would have been refreshing to have a different Prince (Muntagirov?), but we do get a different Sugar Plum Fairy - it just so happens that Lamb is partnered with McRae in this run - so I can't complain. At the moment what I'd love to know is if they dispense with the golden hair dye for the Nutcracker again this year...
