  1. I love the variety of views - I’m more a reader than poster. I think of the forum like a news stand. Youve got the dance mags. People who know their stuff, have probably danced and give great technical insights. I really learn about ballet. Youve then got the Guardian. Great insightful reviews that I understand and inspire me (or not) to see a show. Finally the Daily Mail. I know it’s gossip and sometimes baseless rumour. I shouldn’t read and enjoy but can’t help myself. It’s a guilty pleasure. I hope we can keep all this colour but under the careful eye of the moderators. (Thanks to them).
  2. There’s a lovely video in tribute to Marianela that the Royal has just posted on Facebook. I can’t work out how to link it here but do watch. It’s wonderful to see how this milestone has been celebrated so beautifully.
  3. I remember seeing Les Liaisons Dangereuses a few years ago. Was that Northern? I don’t think it’s been back. I loved it but not sure if that’s just because I’m a fan of LLD - does anyone else remember it?
  4. I was at a Bolshoi performance at the ROH about 10 years ago (Bright Stream I think). We had seats in the amphi, very close to the stage so a really poor view. We could see lots of vacant more cental seats below us. At the interval I asked asked an usher if we could move. He recommended we go to the desk in the foyer and ask if there were any returns. They were very kind and we ended up in the stalls - very much on one side but definitely a better view than we’d had. There had been a girl standing behind us who had heard me ask and so asked too. She ended up in the seats beside us ... and has been one of my dearest friends ever since. In fact we’re going to see ENB at the Coli this Friday. 😀
  5. Me too. I love seeing behind the scenes and it helps me appreciate the performances more when I see the dancers on stage
  6. This is a nice film of Darcey and Marianela Nunez during the coaching process.
  7. I’ve just been to the matinee too. It’s years since I’ve seen Silvia and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does have a 50’s feel but it is fun, beautiful and obviously taxing choreography. Osipova and Muntagirov made it look easy, which was a joy to watch. I also really appreciated they were cast for the matinee as it was the only Silvia I could make. Best wishes go to Bonelli for a speedy recovery.
  8. I saw Le Corsaire the last time the Bolshoi performed at the Coliseum and unfortunately felt it was very slow and overlong. It felt like it would benefit from a good editor. To be honest, I was rather dreading seeing ENB's production because of this previous experience but I have to say that enjoyed it much more. Perhaps the Bolshoi's is for a more sophisticated ballet audience but for me ENB's is much more entertaining and enjoyable. It didn't feel as though there had been any compromise in technique expected from the dancers.
  9. I just loved it last night. The dancing, the music, the interpretation - I found it magical and the time just flew. While I did feel uncomfortable with the how the "taming" was portrayed and even the programme synopsis says that at the end everyone is pleasantly surprised by how submissive she is, everything else was perfect. I would definitely see it again if they tour it in future.
  10. I think it's such a shame that, what looks like, one very brief comment in an interview meant to mark his 40th birthday has been extended into a whole article and then gone viral. There's so much more to him. I just hope the "no such thing as bad publicity" adage applies here.
  11. This was the first time I've been to see a live cinema relay - normally I'm lucky enough to be at the ROH. However, I was SO glad to be sitting in the cinema rather than up in the Amphitheatre when it came to Rhapsody. What detail and intricacy! I really felt that I would have missed a lot if I hadn't had the benefit of the cameras and close ups. I'd never seen either ballet before and loved them both. Steve McRae was fabulous (how did he fit all those steps in?) and Vadim was just charming - I have the feeling that he's just going to get better and better as he grows in confidence. What a lovely evening and I'll DEFINITELY do the cinema relays again. The atmosphere's not the same (I was itching to clap) but great view and £15 instead of £55 for a seat in the rafters.
  12. I really do think that Darcey is the most marvellous ambassador for ballet. I have found her to be an engaging presenter and hopefully there will be people wanting to know more about ballet as a result. It must be a fine line to walk between wanting to provide really meaty information for the already well-informed while also giving engaging details for those with little or no prior ballet knowledge. Some people may start coming to watch live ballet as a result of seeing her on Strictly and then watching her documentaries.
  13. I remember that feeling of having my jaw drop the first time I saw Chroma and I still love watching it after a couple more times since.
  14. I love that the RB is creating new works and taking risks. I think we need to allow for some not to work for others to be brilliant and inspirational. However, it does feel like there have been more misses than hits recently - I can't say I'd like to spend another night with Raven Girl, for example. How do you think they could keep the genuine creativity and also allow dancers to be stretched by new choreography but have some sort of quality control? Surely the fact that the RB is so well-funded means that they can/should take more creative risks than the companies who could not survive an expensive critical failure and so have to be safer. I really enjoy the variety of work available at the RB.
  15. I do enjoy McGregor's choreography and I don't think I've ever had any crotch-related embarrassing moments at the ballet ... even with my binoculars (before you judge, I tend to reside in the amphitheatre). However, I'm surprised that they released the photo. I'm not sure it does credit to anyone.
