I seem to remember UniVerse getting very good reviews in the Linbury. If I'd realised it was that short, I might have booked the Friday, but I might well be pretty tired/down the pub after a conference.

Swan Lake - 9 year old first ballet?
alison replied to Beaker's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Thank you, SwanLA65 - and welcome to the forum! -
I don't think anyone actually did that, though. It's hardly the first time that a principal in the latter stages of his/her career has been what their general public regards as under-cast, but we don't necessarily know why they are no longer dancing roles they used to (or aren't dancing roles we think they would be suited to). There are all sorts of considerations to be taken into account, some which may come from the artistic director/owner of the works, and some from the dancer themselves. Sometimes you do later realise that there were probably good reasons for some of those choices, at least.

Those cut-down seasons seem to be the norm now, unfortunately. I guess it's a cost-cutting measure ☹️

From what I recall of the ballets (bearing in mind that one I haven't seen for 15-odd years, and another for 20-odd), if I were going for a restricted-view seat I think I'd sit on the left-hand side of the auditorium for preference.

Yow - those top prices are quite eye-watering for a triple bill. No wonder they were offering 40% off. There's not much left at all now, is there? You could take a chance on someone returning a pair of tickets between now and the performance, but that's risky, although returns are frequent - and you've got no idea where those returns might be. If you lived in the UK I'd suggest you buy something and then return it if something better turns up, but if you're doing a flying visit that won't work, because the ROH no longer refunds tickets, you just get given a credit voucher. If they're within your price range, I think I'd seriously consider the orange seats in Balcony rows B and C, even though one is behind the other. I can't really speak for the loose seats down the sides of the horseshoe, because I've only sat in them once - I didn't like them, but others may disagree. The other thing to bear in mind - IF you can get online at 1 pm UK time the previous Friday - is that a number of seats and standing places will be released for the following week. Many of these are in the rear amphitheatre - worse than what's available up there now - but they also include the two blocks of seats in Stalls Circle row C nearest the edges of the picture. Have a click on them and you'll get an idea of the view from those. But be warned - Friday Rush has been a bit hit-and-miss recently, and you'd need to be quick. If you didn't succeed there, you would at least have the best part of a week in which something suitable might be returned, but presumably you'd really rather know for certain that you've got something before then. Best of luck to you, anyway!

It most certainly isn't set by the Moderators - at least, not here. We have no control over that setting.

Swan Lake - 9 year old first ballet?
alison replied to Beaker's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
That would be a real downer. Requiem is a much better "finisher" (as was Rite of Spring). -
Mine are almost the same, except for seeing the debut! Talking about gentlemanly, from my ... interesting ... viewing position last night, I noticed several moments where he was careful to move Hayward's skirt to cover her better, but perfectly in tune with the choreography so that it didn't look obvious at all. Very much like Federico Bonelli used to do.

Thank you, and welcome to the forum, fancyfree. Unfortunately, that wasn't the performance I saw. I'd just assumed that the cast sheets would be officially posted somewhere, even if I don't know where to look for them.

Thanks - I had that, but was looking for a copy of what was posted on the wall outside for each individual performance.

Beaker, it was Chroma and Rite of Spring -
Federico Bonelli got a microphone, too. And I see that Rob S has managed to capture the "hug-lift". I was hoping he would, because I didn't!

Manon, Royal Ballet Winter 2024
alison replied to MJW's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I got *a* ticket, yes, but no improvement on what I got last Friday. And yes, I believe Choe was down for both performances, but Dias did dance on Saturday.- 996 replies
